Model Reviewed: Eclipse Spyder GS

Strength:

Ride quality, convertible top fit & function, rear seat room, reliability, gas mileage(23-26mpg), curb appeal.

Weakness:

Off the line power w 4-cyl, quality of dash - there are several cracks.

I thought it was only fair that I wrote a second review. The car has preformed w/o problems since the last review in 2005 and since window repair early 2002, i've kept current on all routine maintanance, tires, etc. I like that it feels like a larger car, very good stability on the road for a car this size. Nothing beats the looks(for the price) I get when driving with the top down. In Florida it is a great poor man's solution to owning a convertible. Only thing is, I wish I would have bought a used GT rather than a new GS. But, good buys are out there now. It is a fun second car for showing off. My four star overall rating is based on the improvements Mit seems to have made with the 2007 redesign of the Spyder.

Strength:

Styling, low price second hand.

Weakness:

Electrical, body integrity, cheap plastic components, leaky head gaskets, too much to list.

If you don't know how to fix a car, don't buy this one. The car is plagued with electrical problems (lights, alternator) and body parts malfunction easily. It is sportscar-like in handling but is nothing special for power. The car looks good but really isn't worth the trouble. There's a reason the resale on these is low and I found out the hard way. You're better off with a Honda, Toyota or Nissan. Least reliable car I've ever had.

Looks, ride, and on a good day it handles nice when your doing 80 on the Parkway.

Weakness:

It has no value on resale. Traction, and the sunroof has a defect on the 00's.

I had a 1998 Eclipse GS bought brand new. It was slow, it has a neon engine in it. Some people may say it's fast, but it isn't. It was a good car though in looks only. I then bought a 2000 Eclipse GS. This one was faster and handled alot better. Traction is not good it is bad in the rain and sometimes in dry weather.

Strong, eats hondas, not a honda, fast, its a fawking eclipse

Weakness:

not as strong as the gsx, parts cost alot from a dealer, but can get cheaper from the rite places

This car is fast, sharp, and reliable (when well maintained). People that usually complain about the eclipse causing problems are usually caused by the need of new spark plags, oil change, air filter, etc. This car is very fast and the 5 speed shifts smoothly. This car easily loses horse power when not maintained, and it usually has great horse power increase with minor tweaks. I have owned this car for over a year and my only problem has been the need of a new clutch. For those who complain about the back seats, its a fawking sports car not a family car so fawk off. So far my eclipse has a AEM V2 cold air intake, Borla cat back exhaust system, Brembo big brake rotors, 18" Racing Hart type S racing rims, short shifter and other minor mods

Strength:

Easy shifting/acceleration; Stylish; Reliable; Fun; GREAT STEREO.

Weakness:

back seat is realy small (its a sporty car though so why complain), Plastic interior cracks and scratches easy (maybe I don't do such a great job of taking care of the dash from Texas heat), Rough ride on the bumpy roads, parts can be expensive, depreciation is rediculouse, dont go to the dealer for repairs with this car....they will try and do unecessary stuff.

I bought this car the first year the new model came out. The body style is sleek and stylish. This car is excellent. Shortly after I bought it my car flooded in 2001 when hurricane Allyson hit Houston. My car was under appro. 5ft of water. I only had liability insurance at the time (college student) so needless to say I wasn't going to get a another car. I gutted all of the interior and deep cleaned all that I could and let the car sit for three weeks under the July sun. After I felt it was completely dry I changed the battery, said a prayer and and the car cranked right up. Spit out A LOT of water from the exhaust. No water in the oil, transmission, or brake fluid. Even the speakers still worked excellent. I took the car to the dealer for inspection and the mechanic gave the car 1 year before it completely shut down from rust and corrosion. I had 24000 miles on the car at that time and now I am up to 121000 miles 4 years later and still running strong. The only thing major that I had to repair (aside from regular wear and tear on a vehicle 100000 miles plus) was the horn and replaced the radio. Flood waters took the horn and radio and that was it. I don't know of any car that can keep on ticking after sustaining heavy flood damage. Did I mention that I am in the medical field and that I know absolutely NOTHING about cars? So my efforts were very elementry and strickly based on common sense....the quality of the car took care of the rest.

fast for an I4 - exlplosive acceleration above 4000 rpm awesome styling comfortable front seats chick-magnet 7 speaker infinty sound system is the hands down best stock ausio system ive ever heard. good cornering ability

Weakness:

blind spots and reaward visibility are atrocious rear seat is not designed for humans water spots form easily on the paint

I bought my eclipse used from a dealership with 42,000 miles. its now 43,000 and i absolutely love this car. the eclipse styling is incredible and gets a lot of looks from bystanders. this car also has the chick-magnetism properties of a porsche for 1/3 the price. the 5 speed manual is responsive and smoothe, although the reverse gear ratio is a little high and its easy to stall when backign out. the interior is comfotorbale but not obnoxious wanna-be luxory - the rear seats arent very comfortable, and gettign in and out of them is quite difficult. performance wise my eclipse is faster than any of my friends four-bangers, although i woudlnt go head to head with any v6's. I have had the vehicle for about two months (1000 miles) and have had no problems. thats not sayign much, but i hope it will be a reflection of the rest of teh life of teh car.

Strength:

Styling and ride quality for a small sportscar are very good. Front seats are very comfortable. Quality of convertible top is very good... so far. No leaks yet. Motor has worked flawlessly.

Weakness:

Price paid new. Depreciation was terrible, barely worth 11K now, even though it is a convertible in mint condition. What is up with that? Some plastic pieces are starting to warp inside, so clips do not hold them in proper position. Inside/dash is rather cheesy for a car this expensive. Stereo rattles when bass is turned up, vibrates alot. Paint stains easily and hard to remove water spots.

I bought this car because of the zero down, 0% interest for 12 month deal Mit had in 2001. Bad idea, but anyways. This car overall is okay, but I will not recommend or will not buy it again. Mitsubishi has made a deal with the devil having Chrysler as a partner. Similar to sebring coupe. Workmanship of interior parts is subpar to poor, stereo is okay. Back seat is larger than other convertibles of this size, but better for bags of groceries than adult humans, kids fit okay. Fun car though, living in Florida, top down time is awesome. Always wanted a convertible, and Miata was too small, so got one of these instead. No troubles with it as of yet, except needed a new power window mechanism within the first two months I had it, covered under warranty, but was a hassle to deal with. Dealer had them in stock(go figure?). I've been treated very well at the LD :) My next car will be another Toyota though, will never stray again!

Power (210, normal asp. vs 220 turbo 4 is awesome), rides good, corners good, looks cool, sounds pretty decent for an eclipse, and is a whole he|| of a lot faster than all of it's predecessors. I like to line up with the old 1st and 2nd gens...lol, carbon fiber tailights and four inch exauhst dont really do anything for the car there bud...lol

Weakness:

Why are there back seats in this car? The sunroof skips alot, and the dang trunk divider and floor are made out of plywood. I left acidic drain cleaner in there for a couple of days and it leaked out and ate a whole in the wood...that's almost funny. Also, almost everything in the interior is made out of plastic, but then again, it is a newer car. After this is paid off I'm going back to restoring my old Jeep. I hate new cars...but I need the credit.

Overall a pretty good car. 5spd, leather, infinity sound, 17inchers, sunroof, blah blah. It holds corners pretty decently, does wicked burnouts through 2nd gear, and stomps the crap out of all the "oh, my car is fast because I put a cold air system and loud exauhst" punks buzzing around. Stock exauhst sounds pretty good (performance is awesome for stock), good lateral acceleration (those 4cyl turbo's were crap. GSX my a$$...they stole that one from Buick and couldn't even keep the name...shame on you Mitsubishi). Pretty decent looks also, I like the black/tan interior, and the sound system kicks! (i dont need subs...i like to listen to the music itself)

I've driven first and second gen GSX's, and also my buddy's "tricked out" 99 GS-T. WEAK. I wouldn't wipe my a$$ with the owner's manual for those cars. Overrated. Turbos are useless untill you get to 3000, by that time your dusted. AWD doesn't do anything for you when all you do is drive the car to work. The new lancers are bada$$ cars, if you need a ride with room for 4, an actual trunk, and a good power/mpg ratio, get one right now. No I mean it...right now dangit. Oh yeah, and if your a rich ba$tard with money to burn on absolutley nothing, spend the extra 20 grand and get an evo rs or an sti, they run cobras up the a$$.

Drives great, looks great, seems reliable

Weakness:

awful gas mileage, blind spots

I have had my Eclipse for a little over 6 months now and have had no problems with it (knock on wood!) so far! I agree that the trunk is frustrating, as it doesn't want to open sometimes, but other than that everything has been great. It's very peppy, gets lots of looks, and interior is pretty comfortable! In high school I had first a Ford Probe and then a Ford Mustang and both were great cars but when I came to college I got this car and I definetely like the Eclipse over those two. It's a fun car to drive.
