Strength:

Good engine, transmission, all power components! The leather is still holding up too. A/C is still cold after living in Phoenix (with NO charging since I have had it)! Have had no breakdown in ANY of the extras. Works like a new car!

Weakness:

Brakes! Must use Nissan brake pads. Terrible mistake using after market pads! Apparently this car is known for this brake problem. The only other thing that I would "complain" about is the stiff ride. I was told the if I added new struts it would only make it stiffer. Not to say that it does not handle well (it does really well), but it does not handle bumps well (I try to avoid them though)

Terrific car overall. Owned it since 93 and have pit many highway and city miles on it (Now with 168K). Engine is still strong and still looks good! Recommend to anyone. "She" has never left me stranded. The only repairs I have had to make other than normal maintenance (oil changes, tranny fluid flushes, radiator flushes, tires, etc.) is the water pump, thermostat at 125K and master cylinder at 104K. other than that NOTHING ELSE! WONDERFUL CAR!

I also own a '96 300ZX. The z rides much smoother, but it should for $30K more! Plus I have had the z in the shop 8 times more than the 240sx!

Strength:

Styling both interior and exterior hold up after 11 years. Low end torque. Handling, like everyone else says, is superb. Easy to maintain. Consistant behavior i.e. starts right up every morning, no weird squeaks and creaks when I'm on the road. Reasonably good power curve and gas mileage (19 to 24MPG).

Weakness:

I don't know where everyone else lives but in San Diego, I see more and more of these cars every day! The worst part is I see the exact same color and model as mine! Red hatchback... I guess the Web is a dangerous thing. Fuel injector problems are epidemic once your 240 hits the 120,000 - 160,000 mile mark. I'm looking at replacing mine. Interior plastic on just a few parts is pretty flimsy e.g. lighter, window buttons, door locks. Some days getting in and out of that seat is a real bummer but I think that's par for the course with most sports cars that are low to the ground. Never liked automatic seatbelts.

I spent the better part of a year looking at RX7 information on the web when I ran across this site and the little link for this amazing car. I really wanted (and still do a bit) an RX7 but when I saw that everyone said the same thing "Excellent performance but expensive to maintain." That scared me off. Then I read the 240 reviews and everything that folks had to say was true: Great performance, reasonable gas milage, low low maintanance, handling that kicks @iiish! Plus there's plenty of support and info on 240sx.org if you want to turn this thing into another pathetic, loud exhausted, winged Asia-Mobile. (My dream actually!) It's a fun car to drive and throw against curves. I have the automatic with over drive and it's ok for me. After years of shifting, I find it over-rated. The size is right for everyday humdrum grocery getting or small Home Cheapo trips. When you gun it, it wants more and gives you that nice growl. I'm hoping for even better perfomance with a typical K&N/Apexi or Borla setup. For a real low price, you have the perfect base to start building a true road warrior.

1972 Chevy Vega, trusty old car that never died although I wished a horrible death to it many a times. It's a Vega for crying out loud!
1970 VW Bug. These cars are "easy to work on" because you have to work on them ALL THE TIME!!! A maintanance nightmare! I loved my Bug but changing oil, adjusting valves, fixing clutch/gas pedal cables just got real old after a while.
1975 Camaro. Six banger but really moved and handled great in spite of its weight and size. Probably would have kept this car if it wasn't on it's dying days, huge oil leak, transmission leak, cooling problems. Still, was a "b1tch1n' Camaro" and the handling was also good. I wonder what a Camaro in good condition could do?
1978 Ford Ranchero. My baby. It's a huge ugly beast but I love its meaness and its 351 engine. Folks move out of the way of the Ranchero and respect it more than the 240. Handles like cr@p though and guzzles gas like the disco king that it is (9 - 11MPG).

speed! It really picks up fast. Small enough to park in little space. Reliable well until yesterday! Not a common car. I have only seen less than 10 for the 5 years I have been here!

Weakness:

Power window does not work at times, odometer works when it feels like, don't trust it in the snow, slippery, poor seat covers, little space in the back but who cares! I could use a cup holder to hold coffee in the winter, kind of sucks gas may be I should change the fuel filter, hard to find used car parts or even used 240 sx, calipers have been sticking on to the back tires, emergency cable functions only when it feels like but fixes all of that

Love it! I have so much fun with my 240 Sx.Not a very common car like Honda Civic. Runs great, accelerates really well. Just had a transmission flush, makes a huge difference. It is small enough for me and it's fancy and sassy. Plus it has racing stripes (it's black it two yellow racing stripes) on it and I always get second looks from people with newer hondas. Love that!I wish it was manual.. Next time. I wouldn't trade it for anything but a newer model. Despite the fact that I have had to fix the brakes, now the radiator, it is a nice sporty car. I am thinking of putting dual on it and giving it a nice paint job. I drove it from Minneapolis, MN to Charlotte, NC to New York and back to Minneapolis and it still runs great

Strength:

Convertible: Damn fun, and women love it.
Coupe: Absolutely everything else. This vehicle is the benchmark to which all others should aspire.

Weakness:

Convertible: Bumpy, loud, bumpy, slow, and did I mention bumpy?
Coupe: Unremovable roof.

I already posted a review on the coupe, but I felt the need to repeat myself; it is one of the finest pieces of machinary ever crafted by man's hands. I've owned that '91 coupe for two years now and thought the only way it could possibly get better would be in convertible form, so I bought one. The convertible is nice enough, I suppose, in it's inherent 240sx-ness, but it just isn't the same. I know that no convertible is ever the same as a coupe, and perhaps mine is just a bad example, but driving it has given me a new found appreciation for it's hard-topped cousin.

If you had to choose between a 240sx coupe or convertible, good luck. But, if you had to choose between any 240sx and some other car, that's not really a decision at all, now is it? Buy the 240. And, be considerate, let the owner of that other car you're looking at see the car you bought instead. =)

Strong from 0-60 a and pretty good in handling I plan to spank a lot of domestics and wanna be hooked up rides.

Weakness:

Wheel hop but plan to upgrade suspension, electrical malfunctions, expensive parts, some store wanted to charge me $50 for a sidemarker.

Well this is the first actual car i bought with my money I would have to say that for $1800 it's in pretty good shape. Just the school car I was looking for. Once I made the deal to pick up the car I told some of my fellow car club members that I got a 240 hatch it brought a sad grin to their faces,no more pushing me around in my 89 galant. There have only been a couple of problems so far mostly electrical, but that does not detour me from putting a little time and money into it. When the engine starts to go I hopefully plan enough to put an SR20DET or DE in it.

It looks like a Lexus 400sc and at olny a fraction of the price

Weakness:

A 1 - 1/12 inch drop in the ride height is needed. This can be costly with the front/rear struts though.

What other car sold for less than 20 large can stack up to the 240 based on looks, performance, and reliability.

Strength:

All of the above, plus its ability to be souped up easily. You can endlessly modify this car, and it just responds better and better.
The looks you get when driving it. Now, where I live, I have noticed not a significant amount of 240 hatchbacks, but, what I would say is a growing number of them. Mine is a coupe, and those, being less frequently seen are eye turners. Around here, as I assume you see in most parts of the country, there are plenty of Camaro's Mustang's, Honda's of all varieties (variety's?), etc. But the 240 looks as cool as it performs, and then some.

Drive hard, drive fast, drive loud.....JUST DRIVE!

Weakness:

Most would agree, winter driving. I remember last March, in the middle of a snowstorm, doing a u-turn on the freeway into oncoming traffic. The scariest incident in my life. I don't recommend it when there is a snowstorm. Take public transportation during those days, and take the 240 every other one.

Having posted before, I just feel the need to reiterate what I've already said. The 240 is one hell of a car. Looks, power, speed, style, etc., everything is there. The greatest feeling on the road, (or at least one of them), is when you notice that everyone wants to race you, and then you destroy them. (I'm not saying you're gonna beat a Lamborghini, but how many times are you privileged enough to even SEE one of those?) However, the vast majority of the time you will be victorious.

The car is very reliable; it starts without fail, it has a 4 cylinder engine so powerful that it blows away many of the V-6 cars I've driven. As a matter of fact, the more I think about it, the more I realize that the 240 is the best car I have driven.

Take care of your 240, but hell, drive it hard too. That's what it's built for...

Handling
Smooth Power (with the SR20DET engine)
Decent Gas Mileage (when staying off turbo)
Great Sleek Looks
Unique
Nothing beats Rear Wheel Drive!!!

Weakness:

Stands up too high (needs a nice set of lowering springs)
The hatchback creaks and rattles too much

This car is an absolute dream to drive! I've got the SR20DET engine (Japanese Silvia turbo engine) in it and a upgraded turbo. It puts out roughly 350hp and blows away almost everything on the road. I've got all the bolt on goodies as well as suspension mods. The power delivery with this engine is very smooth and linear. The handling is awesome, virtually no body roll and high speed manuveurs can be done with high confidence. It's also a very practical car because of decent gas mileage (22mpg), 4 seats, large truck room, and comfortable front seating position. I don't think there's a 12 grand car out there that can match the performance of my 240sx. I have done nothing to the exterior of the car cause I wanted to keep the sleeper look. It's funny to see the faces of Mustang, Civic, Integras, Prelude and 2 corvette owners when I smoke them in a street race. Overall, the 240sx starts off as a good package with excellent potential.

Model Reviewed: SE manual, 91 SE auto

Strength:

True real wheel drive architecture. Good quality, sporty, economical. Good upgrade potential. Is compatible with parts with other Nissans (like the 300zx brakes upgrade). Good torque unlike other high-strung, high-reving Hon-duhs. Often underated by the rice-boys wannabes in their Hon-duhs which means good price for me.

Weakness:

KA engine: nothing mechanically wrong just short a few horses to make this car very popular.

Brakes: For really hard driving, one could put 300zx ones on. But for daily commutes and people on a budget, stock ones are fine.

Mouse belts: never liked the automatic seatbelts but I guess the government imposed these things. Want to know if there are regular belts in the Japanese versions?

No oil & voltage guages: I am just being picky.

Note: They (240sx.org) say there is a timing chain weakness. Out of this fear, I changed the 90 myself and actually wasted my time (it didn't need it) but I had it apart and minus well put the new chain & gears in. I wished they built non-interference engines like Toyotas or Subarus. I don't know about the 91 DOHC. From the drawings it is not a true DOHC. I call it a "slave cam" because there is the main chain similiar to SOHC that drives one gear from the crank. Then another chain actually drives the two cams in the head. Since I wasted my time on the SOHC, I have no plans to mess with the DOHC. Chains last pretty long.

Got a 90 SE manual fastback back in 97 for $4200 (whoa so expensive back then). It already had 114k miles on it when I bought it. It is still running to this day. Needed wear items like tires, brakes, exhaust now at 170k. In 01, I saw a 91 SE automatic for sale. Was initially turned off by needing new windshield, brakes, and hood as well as high 150k miles. But it was relatively cheap at $1.5k and had the DOHC. Works great so far (after fixing it up to bring price tag to just over $2k with parts, tax, tags, inspection fees, & other blood sucking the government inflicted ripoffs). Anyway to my disbelief, the 91 actually gets better gas mileage than my SOHC 90 SE manual (I can almost get 30mpg on the automatic vs 27mpg best for the 5 speed)! I can only attribute this to the fact that it has 4 valves per cylinder vs 3 valves AND the fact that the automatic overdrive is geared really tall at highway speeds. It tachs around 3k at 80mph compared with the 90's 3.5k at 80mph. Consequently the 91 auto has less highway pickup than the 90 manual. Anyway these are great sports cars for people on a budget. Yeah, die-hards will say to put in the SR20DET engines but keep in mind costs go up and reliability will probably go down. The KA engines are borrowed the base truck engines and the Altima. They are easy to maintain, durable, and relatively econimical. I would probably put the SR engines if the KA ever died but I am not out to race these things. I like a sporty car that does not spend have to spend a lot of the time in the shop.
