Strength:

Looks, mileage and low maintenance.A Comfortable ride.

Weakness:

The exhaust shield is rotting away, even though I only have 45,000 miles and noticed that other 1994 models have same problem. Maybe a defect that I am not aware of. Looks like I''ll have to replace the whole systm. Also I don''t like the placement of the horn. Can''t find it when I need it.

Absolutely like this auto. Looks nice, rides well and paint job is great. Very good with mileage.

Strength:

A lot of room in the inside. Runs great . . . when it runs.

Weakness:

Paint chipping off, distributor, starter, etc.

I bought the car about 2 years ago and it had very low miles (approx. 35,000) and for the first year it worked great. This past year it has been a nightmare. I have had to replace the distributor, starter, front right axle, as well as several smaller parts. One hub cap has fallen off and the other three are losing paint. Just curious if anyone else has had distributor problems. I don''t know if it is just my car or a common occurance with this model.

Strength:

powerful engine and room

Weakness:

if you turn up the stereo more than half way and theeres bass in the song, the doors vibrate. other than that i have not had any problems with this car.

This car has a lot of room for both the pasangers and the driver. it doesnt accelerate to well from a stop. but once it gets to a little speed it flys. im really happy with my car.

Strength:

2.4L engine for that price.

Weakness:

Wind noise. Most of all for the last year or so there is a growling noise that comes from the rear brakes when braking between 80-60 Km/h. The dealer cleaned brakes and says nothing wrong. GXE model has drum brakes in the rear. I anyone has any ideas would like to know.

Recommend to anyone. Good buy for that price. If you can affrod buy a Accord or Toyota. But for that price you will never get the Altima options.

Strength:

Power, Reliability, Gas Mileage and Interior Room.

Weakness:

Cup holder gets in the way of the stereo and stick shift. Automatic Safety Belts.

I bought this car in February, 1999 with 83,000 miles on it. I have not had a single mechanical problem with this car whatsoever. The 5 Speed shift is nice with the powerful motor. I am not a fan of automatics so I am biased. However, I would suggest this car to anyone wanting an affordable, sporty and reliable sedan.

Similar Products Used:

VW Jetta..similar reliability however you get more room and power with the Altima.

Strength:

I love the cranberry exterior color and the soft interior seating. The stereo works great, and I love driving the 5-speed. It feels sporty but is still 4 doors and practical. On the highway at fast speeds the ride is smooth, and the brakes work great.

Weakness:

My only issue with the brakes is that while they work well, they have an eternal squeak... the mechanic says it is probably dust on the brakes, but endless car washes have never been able to fix it.

I bought it in March of this year for $6200 with almost 90,000 miles on it. I would recommend it to everyone, and plan on buying a newer Altima after a few years. This was my first car, and all I have had to replace was the starter and a headlight. It is great for college students and anyone else who is looking for a little zip to their regular mid-sized car.

Similar Products Used:

with the Corolla, it has a ton more leg room in the back, and is more stylish on the interior. in my opinion, toyotas are fantastic, reliable cars but the base standard is so ugly! the altima looks and feels great for a much more reasonable price.

Model Reviewed: Nissan Altima GXE

Strength:

- Value for the $$ compared to import and domestic competition
- Excellent build quality and reliability
- Exterior styling
- The car's overall handling (this will improve with better tires)
- Good deals from Nissan on Altima leases

Weakness:

- Stock tires for GXE were lousy, at least for the '98 model....they are definitely worth replacing
- Nissan-installed stereo for standard GXE model is very average, worth at least a speaker upgrade
- Trunk size is good, but the pass-through to the back seat when seats are folded down is small; Nissan says that this is to maintain rigidity

For the money, it is hard to beat the Altima in its class of sedan (see above). I leased this car for a 39-month term shortly after the 1998 model year revision. Work I've had to have done on this car, aside from the major 30,000 scheduled maintenance and regular oil changes:

- replaced brake pads at around 25,000 miles...but, I do heavy city driving
- problem with the AC developed at around 20,000 miles; condensation buildup was not draining properly and instead leaked onto the front passenger's carpet; covered under warranty
- fuel injector cleaning

Credit to the people at Nissan's plant in Tennessee for doing a fine job on building these cars. The 2.4L 4cyl engine has very good acceleration with the auto transmission and is great for everyday city driving as well as on the freeway. I've gotten mid-30s MPG on some long interstate trips. This car has also handled great in a variety of weather conditions - heavy rain, ice/snow.

If I had to do it again, I probably would have gone with the SE model to get the 16" wheels and better tires, stiffer suspension, spoiler, etc... The suspension/tire combination on the GXE model is really not that good. If planning to buy the GXE model, definitely consider alloy wheels and a tire upgrade later on; it will be worth your while.

Will be interesting to see what Nissan's future plans are for the Altima line -- the first version was from 1993-1997, and the current version has now gone from 1998-2001.

Similar Products Used:

- Honda Accord (great car, but more $$ than similarly equipped Altima)
- Toyota Camry (excellent quality/reputation, but also more $$ and too conservative styling)
- Mazda 626 (in my opinion, Altima is a better deal for the $$ and nicer exterior and interior styling)
- VW Jetta (1.8T and VR6 engines get great reviews, but I have to question the reliability and build quality of VW's cars built in Mexico....also, Jetta is smaller than Altima, esp. the back seat, and it's more $$ than a similarly equipped Altima)
- Saturn L series (have heard very good things about this car but have never driven one)

Strength:

Good performance, decent pick up for 4 cylinder.

Weakness:

Transmission, Transmission, Transmission slips when starting from a rolling stop ( 2 Different Dealers say "That's just the way it is"). Noisy Front Brakes ( Drive Me Crazy!!) Body Dings too easily. Lousy Stock Tires. Stereo could be better. Can't store anything in compartment below ashtray, evertime you start off, everything slides onto passenger floor.

I am not inpressed. Especially for the price tag. I basically leased a 18,000 dollar Yugo.

Model Reviewed: Nissan Altima

Strength:

Power, stereo system, convenience features, power, handling abilities, comfort, oh and did I say power.

Weakness:

Wish the cupholders were designed better, although there is a fix to this, a kit is made and you can swap out your single DIN AM/FM cass or CD player with the climate control and place the climate control (which is used less) where the stereo is and place the stereo where the climate control is.

Great car, great pickup espicially when compared with a American car of equal cost (ie. Cavalier, Contour, Civic). Although the Honda line is more reliable, Nissan is definately more reliable then the American counterparts. Bought the car with 46000 miles on it, now about 2 years later, have 98000. Car has given me VERY few problems
-new spark plugs, wires and distributer per manufacturer
recomendation service schedule
-new tires (I drive my car VERY hard)
-new starter (78000 miles)
-new A/C Compressor (68000 miles) - only repair that was unexpected
-new clutch (97000 miles)
For the year and miles, and the fact I race it a lot, I cannot complain. The car can take on many 6 cylinders, leaving them looking at the slopped trunk. Interior is comfortable, gas mileage is average, but for a 4 cylinder with 150 hp (when the above compairable vehicles average - 130), it's not that bad. Would never recommend an automatic though, they have a lot of transmission problems.

Similar Products Used:

Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Honda Civic, Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique, and Toyota Corolla are all in the same class as the Nissan Altima, but the Altima, with a 5 speed is overall a much better choice in power, style, and overall worthiness.
