Model Reviewed: Altima SE

Strength:

The SE includes many features, (e.g.power windows/locks/remote keyless entry, 4 wheel disc brakes, 6 disc in-dash CD player, sport tuned suspension, 16" alloy rims, spoiler, etc..:). The acceleration is excellent. The gas mileage is respectable. The car is fun!

Weakness:

The turning radius is too wide, rear doors are too small, and the heater/AC fan is too noisy.

I truly love this car! Maybe I am too easily impressed after owning Dodges and Fords for the last 10 years, but this car is very well made. Fit and finish are comparable to Toyota and Honda. (I looked carefully at both prior to purchasing my Nissan.) The interior materials and layout were equal to or better than anything I compared. Consumer reviews and surveys reveal dependability rivaling Toyota without the obligatory increase in price usually associated with Japanese automobiles.
Plus, the Altima is built in Smyrna Tennessee with 80% of it's parts manufactured in the good old U.S.A. making it a domestic car rather than an import.I get 25 to 30 miles to the gallon with a combo of city and highway driving. (I have the 5-speed) I will drive this car for years and will buy another Nissan when this one is ready to trade.

Similar Products Used:

Camry and Accord. The interior/cargo room is comparable to both of these cars, but the Altima is more often compared to the Corolla or the Civic by auto mags and websites. It blows all of these cars away in features, comfort, and price. (Although the Accord does have a roomier back seat.)

Strength:

It has a sleek look to the car. The rims bring the can really catch your eyes when clean. It has good speakers to start, and when sub's are added it sounds great. The best feature is the MPH will show up on the front window. The car has a roomy inside and can fit 4 confortably. Even for a 4-cylinder it does have good pic up. The heater warms up very quickly. It has a sporty look and is a good fit for anybody. I ahve gone on a few long trips and not a single problem has accured. After my first winter it took the snow incredably.

Weakness:

The cup holders sit directly in front of the radio. When the car is cold my mph will not move so I have to read the RPM's. The breaks squeek but still work fine. The oile leaks and the cylanoid went out, so the car wouldn't start at all, but after that was fixed there has not been another problem. The glove compartment is useless because it is so small.

This is my first car and when asked to get another one I say No. It drives very nice, and I fit perfect in the car. After upgrading the car with a sub it is a lot of fun to drive. It is the perfect car for the summer because of the moon roof, and drives good in the snow to make it a all around car.

Strength:

Very Roomy, Decent Gas Milege, Very Reliable

Weakness:

Front Side Windows Rattle when opend half way, and noticable rattling at Highway speeds coming from the windows. Odd Body shape in the rear it didn't quite flow with teh rest of the car

This was my first car I had aquired, can't say bought as I leased it, on my own.

It was very roomy as we had taken it on many trips with 4 adults seated very comfortably. On one week long trip we had 4 adults and a convertible car seat, the reat seat occupants could not believe how roomy the rear seats even with the car seat.

Overall I think it was a great car, if it were not for the fact that my family has increased by 2 dogs and baby, I would have kept it or brought another. Another good product by Nissan. By the way I turned my Altima in for a 2001 Quest.

Model Reviewed: GXE

Strength:

1.Lots of space for a little car.
2. Cool-looking dashboard(the "wooden" look is just too cool).
3. Mine came with an awesome stereo system & speakers for some reason.
4. Very easy to drive. Great starter car for high schoolers and college students.
5. The trunk is very large for the size of the car
6. Great value for your money

Weakness:

1. Cup holder placement - I plug in my radar detector into the cigarette lighter and doesn't let the drink on the left side come down all the way.
2. Once a year when the weather starts getting cold, the car whines and refuses to start for a couple of seconds.
3. Gas mileage is not as great as you might expected.
4. Squealing brakes (especially after it's rained)
5. The cloth seats are HORRIBLE if you have pets that shed. Everything sticks to them.
6. I really dislike that you have to turn on the cruise control everytime you start the car.

I love my car. I have had no mechanical problems with it in the 3+ years that I have had it. It is a very safe and reliable car and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to give their kids a good solid car. I think the 97 model is the best looking one out there. (I'm not biased, really..hehe) I have a spoiler on it and it's a pretty zippy little car, actually.

Similar Products Used:

1987 Saab 9000 - now this car has some pep! Definitely outshines the altima.
1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee - roomier interior, better gas mileage
2000 Honda Accord - once again, more pep..but my little altima's stereo sytem is a million times better

Strength:

leather seats are great, supple ride, nice zip for a four banger

Weakness:

tranny, tranny, tranny, and oh yes.... the tranny.

This car means one thing to my wife and I, Reliable transportation!! And it sure does deliver. My '78 BMW and '86 Suburban are fun to own, but when we have to get somewhere- comfortably and efficiantly this is definately the choice. A few comments:
- If you are looking for a nice, smooth automatic transmission, this is NOT the car for you. I am a manual man at heart, this tranny hesitates from 2nd to 3rd EVERYTIME! It drives me insane. My wife claims she doesn't notice it.
- If you're owning, you owe it to yourself and the car to use synthetic oil and Puregaurd filters. 42,000 miles- smooth as silk (engine that is)
- Get the leather.
- This car regularly gives us 32 mpg on the freeway.
- I wholeheartedly believe this car will last us over 15 yrs.

Model Reviewed: Altima GXE

Strength:

Power (for its class), Rock-solid reliability, Above-average handling, Price.

Weakness:

The Original Equipment Tires (Especially the T-rated ones on the 2000 GXE--they really should all come with at least H-rated ones). The slightly "chunky" styling when viewed from the rear--who knows, though? Some folks might like this.

What else can I say? We've owned three Altimas already, and had no mechanical problems whatsoever, averaging 35,000-plus miles a year on each. Even with the regular GXE models, the engine is pretty strong. Resale value was good, too. If you're looking for something reasonably fun to drive in this rather conservative car segment, you might want to give the Altima a test drive--at least before you check out the Camrys and Accords.

Similar Products Used:

1996 Altima XE - Felt more sport-oriented than the 2000, but a lot more cramped in the rear seat.
1998 Altima GXE - less sporty, a bit less solid-feeling handling-wise.
Altimas have the slight power edge compared to Camrys and Accords. Accords look nicer on the inside, and Camrys feel softer, more sedan-like, but neither approach when comparing power/handling versus price.

Model Reviewed: Nissan Altima SE

Strength:

The SE is very quiet, nice sports suspension, lots of headroom (I'm 6-3), great acceleration, 6CD-in dash, very reliable car.

Weakness:

Turning radius is too big, gas mileage could be better, rear doors don't open too wide....All these things are no big deal, but are the most annoying thing about the car.

This is the 2nd Altima I have owned since 1998. The first was a basic GXE that I leased. My second Altima I just purchased a few days ago. I purchased, this time, the Altima SE. Very sport, nice looks and fun to drive! I put 52k miles on the 98 and had no problems at all. Just gave it gas, oil changes and brakes/tires and that was it. I was very satisfied with the car, so I got another one! Anyone looking for a fun, reliable, small/midsize sedan should take an Altima out for a drive. The SE rides a little rougher than the GXE and GLE but that is because of the sports suspension. Go check one out!

Similar Products Used:

I test drove the Honda Civic and accord. Have driven the Camery several times on roadtrips. The Altima has a ride that is as good if not better than the above. It is as quiet or better and more fun to drive!

Model Reviewed: Altima GXE

Strength:

Bang for the buck. Upscale Styling for a budget price. Good acceleration. Reasonable comfort. Overall reliability.

Weakness:

Handling and suspension. Thin sounding trunk lid.

I always wanted to buy American, do the patriotic thing. But owning two Chevy's broke me of that vision. For the price, you can't beat the Altima. It gives you luxery features and looks for under $18k and that's hard to do in this time and age. The interior is well appointed, suprisingly for such a low priced vehicle. The acceleration is quite competent and easily outperformed my Barretta in that aspect, even with the Altima being an automatic and the Barretta being a 5 speed. The smaller size of the car allows it to be quite nimble in traffic. The combination of good acceleration and excellent brakes gives greater confidence when driving in crowded situations. The cabin is a fairly comfortable car for a small sized sedan. Even for a 6'3" 270lb ex-linebacker. I actually have more headroom in the Altima than I do in the Maxima, go figure.

The few things that I didn't like about the Altima is the rather thin sounding truck lid and body panels. One of the ways in which Nissan could trim cost on the car was to use thinner sheet metal. But that is only visible if you inspect the car closely. For what it cost, it is understandable and only a minor gripe. Had it a more solid truck, body panels, this car would be nearly perfect. The handling of the car is not that great. The Barretta had a wider wheel base allowing me to take my favorite unimpeded on ramps at considerable speed (and fun). Doing so with the Altima on the first day I had it nearly wound me up in a ditch! The suspension has always been really bouncy and sometimes difficult to control on the rather rugged Interstates of NE Ohio.

Now the Altima, as of last night, is relegated to a commuter car. I purchased the new Maxima SE 20th Anniversary Edition. As a comparison, there is none. All my complaints about the Altima are addressed by the Maxima and all my raves have been exceeded to yet another degree. I don't feel as guilty driving a foriegn car cause I know there is nothing domestic that can approach the quality and the features of the Altima or the Maxima. The domestic car makers better see the light of day soon, cause I don't know how much longer "Buy American" will get them through.

TURNING CIRCLE A TAD TOO WIDE, OUTSIDE REVIEW MIRRORS DON'T FOLD, BRAKES CAN GET SQUEAKY SOMETIME.

I BOUGHT THE CAR IN JAN 2000. NO PROBLEMS SO FAR. LOVE AND ENJOY THE CAR EVERY DAY. ACE IN HANDLING. WITH THE SPOILER AND ALLOY WHEELS , MY ALTIMA SE SHINES ALL THE WAY. GAS MILAGE IS GENERALLY GOOD . EXTREMELY RELIABLE. I LEASED AN ALTIMA GXE AUTO IN 97 TO 2000 AND ENDED UP BUYING THE SE AT THE END OF MY LEASE. THE ALTIMA ENGINE HAD PROVE ITSELF AND ALSO THE TRANSMISSION IS GREATE IN EVERYDAY DRIVING. MY BROTHER IS SO IMPRESSED WITH THE POWER THIS BABY PROVIDES. FEEL LIKE A V6. NOT AS SILKY AS THE V6 FROM THE MAXIMA MY FRIEND HAS, BUT VERY COMPETENT. TIMING CHAIN IS A BIG PLUS WITH MAINTENANCE, ONLY OIL CHANGE NEEDED EVERY 3000 MILES. SOUND SYSTEM IS A BLAST. IT CAN BE BOTH A PARTY CAR AS WELL AS A WORK BUDDY. THE FRONT PANEL IS BUILD WITH GREATE QUALITY. HEAT AND A/C BEAT THE MAXIMA IN THE AREA OF HOW FAST IT WARMS YOU UP OR COOL YOU DOWN IN THE SUMMER. MERGING POWER AND MANEUVERING IN TRAFFIC IS EXCEPTIONAL. FUN, FUN, FUN AND ALSO STAND OUT FROM THE ACCORD AND CAMRY CROW.THIS IS THE CAR TO KEEP FOR PEOPLE WHO PLAN TO HAVE THE CAR FOR 10 YEARS DUE TO RELIABILITY AND ALL GREATE CHARACTERS , NOT FOR FOLKS WHO WANNA TO CHANGE CARS EVERY 3 YEARS. AFTER ALL THIS CAR IS A HIT, NO WONDER IT IS THE TOP SELLING MODEL FOR NISSAN FOR YEARS AND ALSO YEARS TO COME.
