Strength:

Reliable and durable. Good power without torque steer. Good gas mileage on regular gas. Smooth and quiet ride. Good handling and braking.

Weakness:

Would like a litle more cushion on the seat bottom.

This is a very refined car for the money. More power than the 4 cylinder Accord or Camry. This car has been built for years and has been improved and refined without a big price increase. A little more horsepower and a little more comfortable seat would make it equal to the Maxima. The car actually has less tire a road noise than the Maxima at a much lower price. Also, more horsepower could add some torque steer. This car has none and has enough power for practical use. Does not have the mechanical problems that many cars use to have and some still have. Should last a long time with proper care. A responsible choice.

Strength:

the 190hp v-6 keeps you from gettting run over when merging with highway traffic. styling allows it to fit in with newer cars. VERY RELIABLE

Weakness:

the ride is rough, and the transmission doesn't take off well from rolling stops

i bought my maxima about a year ago (the longest i have ever had a car) from my aunt. it had 196000 miles on it, and my parents warned me against buying it. i'm glad i didn't. i have since added 30000 miles to it, and had to replace the alternator, and a cv joint. the car is a great car, but i need somthing that gets better than 20 miles per gallon. the se handles great, and the four wheel disc brakes leave you confident in stop and go traffic. i am currently looking at a 1995 altima se. if you are looking for a good and reliable car, the maxima is a great buy. with 218000 miles on it, i can still drive like a typical 18 year old guy, and not feel like the car is going to explode.

Strength:

Acceleration and handling. Gas mileage good. I like the looks on the SE too.

Weakness:

Only thing that bugs me is the side mirrors don't give at all. They'll just break if something hits them. I've heard they aren't cheap to repair. And the pass thru from the trunk is pretty small.

I've had my Altima since last January and I really, really like it. It's fun to drive and I haven't had any problems with it at all. Really like how peppy the 4 cylinder is. I'd recommend the SE for people who want a smaller, 4 door sedan that is fun to drive.

Similar Products Used:

Honda Accord. I've had a Honda Accord too, but I like my Altima much better. Better handling and better acceleration by far.

Infiniti G20. I test drove the Altima against the G20 on the same day. The G20 seems like a great, quality car. But I thought the Altima was in the same neighborhood and $$$ less.

Strength:

Sport Tuned suspension, 16inch tires all disc brakes, spoiler, fog lights, 6 disc in dash cd changer all standard. Basically a Maxima for $$$ less. More bang for your buck than any 4cyc in it's class: 626, Camry, Accord, Galant...

Weakness:

No V6 engine yet. No woodgrain trim. Heard the 2002 Altima will be bigger than the current Maxima and have a 170bhps 4cyc and a 240bhps 6cyc engine. Gas hungary.

This is my 2nd Altima in Less than 2 years. My 1st Altima was 2000 GXE Super Black and I loved this car. I added fog lights and a spoiler and some foglights to make it more SE like. Unfortunately Black cars are hard to keep clean, and I out-grew this car and was ready for Maxima. I went to the local dealer and test drove the Maxima SE, and was disappointed in its road manners(automatic), but I was bitten by that new car bug and deside to get the Altima SE. This time in platinum with a power glass sunroof, and I have fallen in love with this car. I plan to fix the woodgrain problem by getting an aftermark woodgrain/carbon fiber kit. I highly recommend the Altima SE over the GXE and GLE. The GXE is good if you're looking for just a well equip car thats used to get you from point A to point B. The GLE is the top of the line Alty, but it doesn't come with all disc brakes and 6 disc CD Changer, or spoiler.

Strength:

extremely SAFE--good gas mileage--and it can take a beating and keep on ticking. Lot's of interior room.

Weakness:

Breaks are forever squeeky but seem to work fine. (don't try just changing the pads on it though--the drums need to be changed out as well when the time comes to arrive at the feelings of "new breaks") You'll be reduced to sticking cold drinks between your legs if you want to have a drink and manage the stereo at the same time. (That's the 93-don't know about the latest models)

This is a farewell to my trusty Altima since it was finally totalled last wednesday. I say finally because from the time I bought it as a used one-owner in 1995 it's been through 3 minor collisions and two major car accidents. (don't ask--I guess I have a fool driver target on me) The point is, this car took a major beating as our family car and kept right on going despite shotty autobody repair service from a Nissan dealership in Va. The car saved my life once in 1998 and last wednesday when some fool took a 25mph corner at 55 in the rain and hydroplaned into my lane. Does it look bland? Yes. Does it feel amazing at freeway speeds? No. But if by some chance someone dorks out behind the wheel and ends up slamming into you at high speeds--know that you will emerge suprisingly well considering the impact of the collision. Since there's nothing more valuable than life, the Altima gets a five star rating from me. It's my understanding that the 2000 and 2001's are pretty much the same as far as the safety of the cabin (additional side air bags though) so this is a great buy for a family car. The body styling is a bit hokey but it does it's job when it comes to making sure you're safe.

Strength:

Nice interior, decent gas mileage (but should be better)

Weakness:

gear shift sticks often.
Service Department
Cup holders
Paint Chips
Ding's easily

I have had to have it towed 2 times because the car won't come out of park - I've got an automatic. Service Department told me the first time that it was stuck because I had spilled something in the shifter and it needed to be cleaned out. They cleaned it out and 2 months later it started sticking again but would eventually go into gear - it has been sticking (mostly in cold weather) for several months. I took it again to the dealer service department yesterday because I was still having problems with car sticking in park. I picked it up 3 hours later, drove it to work (10 miles) and to the store after work (2 miles) and it stuck and had to be towed again. Every Altima owner in the area I have spoken with has the same problem as well as a few Maxima owners and all the service guys keep telling me is that it's because I've spilled something in the shifter, I didn't have anything in the car to spill in it yesterday.
The paint has been chipping on the front since I got the car, I've had it repainted and it still chips. More paint chips off everytime I wash it. It's a good car except for these flaws I've mentioned. I don't think I'd buy another Altima because of the shifter problem but I'll keep this one for right now. It's got over 100k miles on it and I know that's a lot, but I expected better.

stereo could sound a little better, that's it.

nissans are well built cars and this one should last a long time, my last sentra had 200000 miles and still going strong. acceleration is surprisingly strong for a four cylinder and i like that i can have a 5-speed with this type of classy car. does just about everything well and a good price.

Strength:

The Altima has a quality feel to it, both in driving and appearance. Put on four fatty touring tires and you forget that your driving a sedan, until you reach about 110 mph.

Weakness:

engine hard to work on, the little guy is crammed right in there. Paint chips easily...

My Car developed a mean guy oil leak at the timing chain cover at 88k, as i said before engine is hard to get at so the local garage will get seven bills to fix it as its in critical condition. Front struts are also history, but thats an easy fix on these cars.. These problems could happen to any make or model, just the luck of the draw and your cars history. I've driven a lot of cars and I say that the Altima is a classy ride thats hard to call a family car or a shag wagon.. you can tint and chrome or leave it alone, it just works either way.. Though I wouldn't take this car to the races, I will say that it can hold its own and still get you home with some gas to spare. One last thing, gas tank is only 12 gallons!

Strength:

Even with an automatic, this car can move swiftly. The reliability factor is up there with Toyota and Honda. The styling is great.

Weakness:

The brakes squeal and can lock up in wet weather (no ABS). The gas mileage isn't too hot. I prefer a 5 speed.

This is the perfect college car. It can hold a lot; I've stuffed my entire 10 piece drum set in there. They can be found anywhere pretty cheap. Another plus, they share the same engine as the 240sx, so some mods will crossover.
