Fun and economical to drive.

Paid approximately 17K. Best money for a car I've ever spent. It has 127,000 miles with almost no problems. Three weeks ago, while having it serviced, one CV boot did have to be replaced. It is serviced about every 4,000 miles. I believe this helps. It still feels tight and maintains very good road control. We bought a new Honda CRV last October that I love. But for true driving fun - the vroom factor - the Altima is number 1. I believe in buying extended service contracts for my cars. This is the first car that I've EVER had that I didn't need it. At about 80K there was a minor sensor problem. Total cost to fix without the contract would have been about $120.

Bottom line - this is my wife's car. She puts about 90 miles a day on it. Rather than get myself a new car I wanted to get one for her. SHE SAID NO!

Would I get another? Based on this experience - heck yes!

Strength:

Reliability, smooth handling, nice interior design, almost no maintainance. It runs almost as smooth as the day I got it.

Weakness:

Kinda weird exterior, bad gas mileage, scratches easily and sometimes loses power when A/C is used too long I think the power distribution is a little off judging from the A/C and stereo.

I bought the car for a cool 15000 new. This small car is pretty fun to drive and had nice pick-up. I personally chose this car because it gave me more power and options for my money (compared to the civic ). All I had to sacrifice was the looks but I don't care cuz I'm not out to impress anybody. The mileage is horrific-I only get 250-280 miles per 15.8 gallon tank. As time goes on , I like the seats less and less but the rest of the interior is awesome especially if you keep it clean. If the car is taken car of and kept clean (on the inside), you CANNOT tell that you are driving a 4 year old car. That's how good the engine is.

Strength:

I like the headroom, the quality of the interior materials, solid construction (you can grap the center console and try to shake it back and forth, but it won't move),
the 150 hp/154 ft-lb engine, relative interior quietness (somwhere between a Neon and a Mercedes).
I almost got romped by a truck that came into my lane, and the quick handling of the Altima got me out of the way in time.

Weakness:

The styling is a bit wuss-baggy, I'm thinking. I like the styling of the 1998-on models better.
The stupid, STUPID placement of cupholders, which interfere with the radio access when used.
3/21/00 (78,000 miles) - I may need a new right rear strut, definitely need new air conditioner belt and new serpentine belt
(the timing mechanism in my Altima is a chain, luckily). This will be about $375.00 inclusive, my biggest repair/maintenance
bill to date (likely the last before 100,000 miles). Engine, tranny (4-speed auto) and body are doing fine.

I bought this heap (just kidding) with 46,000 miles on it in November 1997.
It now has 78,000 miles and is doing well, despite the needed repairs mentioned above.
Nissan reliability is somewhat lower than Honda, but still above average. The initial price savings on a Nissan over a Honda probably offset
this difference in the long run.

I had a 1968 Mustang - that was a history piece. Next was a 1994 Neon. Neon was fast and reliable, but never felt very solid. The Altima does, however - things don't bend and flex when you tug on them.

Strength:

I enjoyed the reliability. When it was newer, it handled beatifully. Gas milage was good as well. The engine is powerful for its class, overall a great value

Weakness:

The cup holders. I guess the Japenese have never heard of 7-11 because the only drink that can be placed in the cup holders without interfering with the radio is a can soda. The car was very reliable before the 90k mark, but after that the slow demise has started. I had to replace the alternator, the left door lock stopped working. Worst of all, the transmission is on its last legs. Granted, I drive A LOT, but there was no warning for the transmission.

I bought the car used with 30k miles. I would recommend Altimas in a heartbeat; but only as a lease car. The repair surprises really sting.

HANDLING, PASSING POWER, OPTIONS AND MOST OF ALL LOTS OF CAR FOR YOUR MONEY.I SHOPPED FOR HONDA CAMRY, ACCORD AND EVEN COROLLA. NONE OFFER ME SUCH STANDARD LIKE A/C , SUNROOF, CD, ALLOY WHEEL, 4 WHEEL DISK BRAKES , FOG LIGHTS MANY MORE FOR THE SAME PRICE. I LEASED AN ALTIMA GXE IN 97 AND TOTALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THE CAR. TROUBLE FREE FOR ALL 3 YEARS. ONLY NEEDED OIL CHANGE EVERY 3000 MILES OR 3 MONTH INTERVAL. I RETURNED MY LEASED ONE AND IMEDIATELLY PURCHASE THE SE 2000 SINCE NISSAN OFFERS 3.9 APR/60 MOS WHILE THE HONDA DEALERSHIP LOWEST WAS 6.9 APR. LOVE THE FINANCE DEPARMENT OF NISSAN. THE SERVICE IS PROMPT AND PROFESSIONAL. THIS IS A WONDERFUL CAR FOR COMMUTING. IT DOES NOT REQUIRE SUPER PREMIUM GASOLINE LIKE THE MAXIMA DOES. SO IT IS A BLESSING WITH THE WAY GAS PRICE JUMPS ALMOST DAILY. LOVE THE TINTED GLASS AND THE CD SOUND SYSTEM AND THE TOP QUALITY PANEL MATERIAL AND INTERIOR. THE ENGINE NOISE IS MUCH MORE MINIMIZED DUE TO THICKER DRIVER SIDE DOOR GLASS AND NOISE ISOLATION MATERIAL. THE STEERING FEELS CONFIDENT AND CORNERI NG IS EXCEPTIONAL. THE 2000 SE TRULY FEELS LIKE A SPORT SEDAN.

Weakness:

NO HEAD SUPPORT FOR BACK SEAT PASSENGERS, THE OUTSIDE MIRROR S DON'T FOLD LIKE THE OLDER ALTIMA MODELS.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, RELIABLE, BEST HANDLING, GREAT MPG, NO TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT NEEDED. I PAID 19,800 FOR THIS CAR AND FEEL GREAT ABOUT IT BECAUSE IF I WENT FOR THE HONDA I WOULD HAVE PAID 3500 DOLLARS MORE IN INTEREST IN 5 YEARS FOR HONDA. I KNOW THE CAR SO WELL THAT I ONLY NEEDED THE SALE MAN DRIVE ME TO THE LOT IN THE SNOW THAT NIGHT AND SCANNED THE COLLOR I LIKE AND I JUST PICKED IT UP THE NEXT DAY. THE ALTIMA JUST FEELS VERY SOLID AND WELL BUILT. NO WONDER IT IS THE BEST SELLING MODEL FOR NISSAN IN THE LAST 5 YEARS.

Gas mileage. Decent power. Low maintenance

Weakness:

A little small for me (6'3"), but not too bad.

I would highly recommend this car. I drive 65 miles one way to work each day. Currently, I have 248,000 miles on the car. The only maintenance has been one tune up, and consistent oil changes every 6000 miles. Did recently have a minor gas leak that was fixed my local repairman in a half-hour to fix. Going to try to reach the magical 300,000 mark. Engine still runs great. Having a chain as a timing belt a plus.

It's a very nice looking car, leather interior, CD/Tape, power moonroof, alloy wheels, great pick-up. I enjoy driving it.

FUEL ECONOMY!!! I can't seem to get good fuel economy. I have read umpteen praises for its fuel economy, but yet to experience it, especially with these gas prices going up. ANY CLUES? HELP?

Recommend it. I liked the salesmen at the dealer I bought it from. A few cosmetic blemishes to be fixed, but otherwise nice car. Just worried about the stupid gas mileage. I mean, I only drive 16.4 miles to and from work each day and I am almost on E after a week... very frustrating for someone who could drive almost 2 weeks on 1 tank of gas (Celica)!!!

Strength:

Everything! I have owned this car for 5 years and have had very few problems. The speaker system is having some static at the moment but that is minor. I had one defect inside the door latch in the first month which Nissan fixed promptly. The gas mileage is great--one reason that I have stayed away from SUV's. The thermostat climate control system is the best. I do not think they offer this feature anymore. CD is awesome! This GLE model comes with a sunroof which is great. I have done no repairs other than the usual brakes and four tires along with the usual oil changes. The car has over 60,000 miles and recently had a muffler installed. I do not think these repairs are extraordinary for this amount of miles. The alloy wheels give a smart look!

Weakness:

Possibly a little more power but that would take away from the miles per gallon. The trunk latch sometimes hits me when it comes down too fast. It is positioned at a bad angle.

I paid 20,000 which was marked down from 22k. I thought this was fair. The car is loaded with every option you could think of. A wonderful car for someone who needs a car that won't break down and will not cost you a fortune at the gas pump. It has a lot of standard options and it look greats too!

SERVICE!! (see review summary)

I am trying to post this on every available message board I can find...
I recently purchased a brand new 1999 Nissan Altima (about four months ago). Two months after I bought the car the paint started peeling on the front bumper when I was washing the car. I brought the vehicle back to the Nissan dealership so they can take a look at it. They told me a "professional paint inspector" needed to take a look at it. I had to miss a lot of work bringing the car back and forth between the dealership and a body shop (I had to get an estimate to re-paint the bumper myself). Two months later, and after NUMEROUS phone calls, the paint inspector finally decided to look at my car. Needless to say, after two months of driving around in the wind and rain, the paint was no longer peeling on the bumper. Nissan is refusing to re-paint my bumper!! The paint inspector told them he felt the peeling was due to "rock chipping" (which is NOT TRUE)- it must have been a REALLY big rock to peel the paint off my front bumper, not to mention a "magic" rock that can peel paint but leave no scratches!! I purchased the car for over $16,000. The cost to re-paint the bumper is only $200. I've called Nissan Consumer Affairs and their "consolation gift" is two free oil changes. After all of the hassel I had to deal with they want to give me $30 worth of oil changes!!
I am sending this out so everyone knows of my experience with Nissan. After I purchased the car I dropped off the face of the earth as far as Nissan was concerned. I received no phone call asking me about my buying experience. They didn't care whether or not I liked my car. They didn't even thank me for buying a car!! And when I needed service I got the run-around for TWO MONTHS! The Nissan service department or Consumer Affairs made no effort to contact me. I HAD TO CALL THEM!
I am asking everyone to read this carefully and decide whether or not it's worth spending that much money on a car and getting HORRIBLE SERVICE afterwards. I WILL NEVER buy another Nissan vehicle - that's how bad the service is!!!!!
