Strength:

What's not to like? Start with the engine--docile enough for around town, plenty of low-end torque for stop-light roulette, and a load of pickup for passing. Not to mention great brakes (even without ABS). My daily commute is 35+ miles each way, and this baby almost makes even THAT fun! Distinctive styling, roomy interior, nice lo-gloss vinyl dash and decent-looking cloth seats and trim panels (I have a GXE with the grey interior) that (IMHO) look better than the beige leather SE interiors I looked at. Plus, my dealer's service department is A-1 [my previous ride was a '93 Quest that I put 134K miles on without any major problems thanks (I believe) to getting all routine maintenance done there]. My gas mileage is about 25-26 overall--much better than I expected.

Weakness:

It would be nice to have the entire back seat fold down instead of that stupid ski-sized door. Wish I had the Bose sound system--the base stereo is OK, but you don't want to crank it up too high. Also, I wish it took regular gas--although having 190hp on tap makes the few cents a gallon extra for 93 octane well worth it. BTW--I just replaced the original headlight bulbs with Wagner 9004BL Britelites--I discovered them on another Maxima board, and they are absolute flamethrowers compared to the OEM lights.

I paid $14K for an off-lease GXE in Dec. '98. It had 42K miles on it, but was clean as a whistle. Other than getting the full-boat maintenance at 60K (some stuff it probably didn't need, but which gave me a baseline for my own maintenance schedule), the only thing I've done in 31K miles is replace the Brigadier tires that the dealer put on it (they were brand new to pass inspection) with a set of Goodyear Aquatred 3's (of course, it hasn't rained here since I got them 2 months ago). The Brigadiers were OK and still had plenty of tread (no alignment problems), but I wanted better tires before winter. My only complaint would be that it's black and I don't have a garage. In short, I totally recommend the Maxima--whether you need 4 doors or not (my kids have their own cars, so it's usually just two of us), it's the quickest, classiest ride for the money. I'm trying to get my wife to buy a new one, because I plan on putting another 100K on this one!

Absolutely no comparison to my wife's '92 Accord EX, or to the later model Hondas we've test driven--Maximas rule!

WOW!! This is the best car I have ever has!!! The wood trim makes the car look more expencive, and you can't get that with the GXE or SE. It all the possible options and it is a nice fast car. The V6 3.0 190 HP purrrrrs along the highway or when I really push it. The 6 speaker BOSE system works great, it sounds like your in a theater. The engine is working great and every thing is fine so far (exept for the brakes). The A/c is great, and it has daul front and side airbags, and a 6 way power seat for the driver but a 4 way power seat for the passenger. 0-60 in just 7.0. A 4 door car that goes 0-60 in 7.0 or under is consider a sports sedan. Almost $30,000 may seem like a lot, but really for the car you are getting it is not that much. Ya, sure you could go get a Honda or a Subaru etc... for about $5,000 less but it won't be as good. I can just tell it is a great car!!

Weakness:

I had to fix the brakes in the 1 1/2 i'v had it. I also don't like how the passenger only gets a 4 way power seat. Since the GLE is the most expencive model but it only has 15 inch rims that don't look expencive. I also don't like how the speed limit is governed at only 112MPH. DARN!!!!

Yes, I would recommend this car to anybody. Whether your using it for a family car or a sports car. It's an all season car for anybody. It can be for a teenager, young male or young female, or even elderly poeple. It's just a perfect car.

great engine, just pulls and pulls and sounds great, handling is beautiful, interior feels like a cockpit and its very simple and driver friendly, great styling too

Weakness:

weak breaks, pain in the butt to redo especially if you have to get the rotors and drums done

if you have a chance to get this car get it, its reliable, its safe, it fun and its fast. if you can get a 91-94 in good condition you got a best buy, roomy, comfortable and it stands apart from the camry's and accords

Strength:

I LOVE the comfort & room it provides. My guests are not cramped in the back. The Lakeshore Blue color is very appealing. Acceleration is fantastic and I tend to forget how fast I am going.

Weakness:

Since I've had it (1 1/2 yrs), I have taken it to the shop 6 times for brake and shifting problems. Shifting becomes sticky when it rains or when the temperature drops. 4 times the car did not start when I turned on the ignition.

The Nissan employees (sales person, manager, and service dept) were wonderful (friendly & always helpful), however, although I know several reliable people who have had their Maximas for a long time and love their cars, I cannot say that I have had the same experience with mine.

Strength:

Very good value/performance for the money. This is my 3rd Maxima
('92 & '95). Good performance, useful features. It doesn't have some of the "toys" that other brands offer, but all of the needed stuff is there.

Nissan has taken away some of the content of past models, but has added other features to keep it contemporary. I think that it looks good compared to compettive brands (Accord, Camry etc.). The 17" wheels and lower profile tires add to the look. No question, the engine is a plus.

Weakness:

Are Maxima windshields soft? This one and my '95 were chipped by relatively light rock hits. I've had harder hits in my Intrepid and other cars that didn't do anything.

Some of the interior stuff (headliner, ash tray/coin holder etc.) are a notch lower in quality than past models.

I'd recommend the '00 Maxima to anyone looking for an attractive, unique alternative to the V6's offered by Honda, Toyota, Pontiac, VW & Audi (I think that the German's are too expensive for what you get).

Had '92 and '95 Maxima's. I've never owned the same model of car 3 times in a row, but when I go shopping, they're hard to beat for the money. Resale on all of them has been VERY good.

Model Reviewed: SE 5-Speed

Strength:

Good acceleration, nice clutch/transmission feel, good handling(for a "family" sedan), good ergonomics, pretty good system, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde engine personality(an animal beyond ~3900 rpms).`

Weakness:

It's still a front drive car, clutch is kinda deep(is that how they all are?), first gear is moody(the flat torque band makes for interesting escapades in first), no rear headrests(a la the Infiniti I30), no 6th gear, stock shifter's too long for high speed applications, no coupe/rwd/awd models available.

I don't know how much my dad paid for it, but I do know that after 5 years of his tame, middle-aged driving this car is in great shape. This Maxima is the all-around best car for me: it's roomy, quiet, and easy to drive on long trips; when driven properly, it can transform into a tamer version of it's engine's ancestor, the 300ZX; and it has all the creature comforts expected of a car in its class. For the amount of money it cost, the Maxima SE blows almost all of its competition in all aspects. This car performs well; if you disregard the heavy front due to the front-drive system, a naturally-aspirated V6 teamed with an awesome 5-speed, 3/4 sports suspension and OK tires with the ability to do 60 in 6.7 seconds is pretty impressive. The best way I can describe the engine's potency is by talking about my second real driving experience with it. I was at a corner; I put both the clutch and the gas to the floor and let the clutch go. By the time the tires stopped squealing, I was doing sixty in 2nd. And the car was as quiet as it could be at 6500 rpms. The interior is great, too, and space is no problem unless the front seats are all the way back. To drive the stick the seat must be as forward as necessary for one to depress the clutch fully, otherwise the car won't start or switch gears. But everything is logically placed, and the interior is spacious while keeping everything in reach. The Bose system is also great as it is, but for my tastes in music an additional 300 watt subwoofer would be apprectiated. This way, bass and treble are preserved by redistributing them. Anyway, the car communicates well, from the clutch pedal and shift lever/knob vibrating in tune with the engine to the communicative and properly stiff steering and suspension. My only true gripe is that with the torquey V6 stiffer springs to hold the front down and stickier, wider tires replace the crappy little 16"s they sent the car with. Otherwise it's a great machine. The Maxima can be anyone's car, but for those of us who either like sticks, street-legal performance, and have a family, the SE 5-speed is a great blend of luxury and sport, with the balance biased to the latter.

Similar Products Used:

1997 Honda Accord EX V6, Auto and 91 Mazda 929S. The Maxima's higher engine output blew the Accord out of the water. It's also roomier and more luxurious(the Accord was a big Civic with leather). The 929S has the same horsepower, but also has an auto. The engine's power can be felt at instants, but for the most part is sapped by transmission and age. Also, Bose rules.
