Strength:

gas mileage is excellent. the front wheel drive is good in snow.

Weakness:

mechanical durability of parts

first of all I was a true believer in DatsunNissan cars. the little B110 got an incredible 50 miles per gallon on good conditions. Although I eventally lost the use of its speedomoter I think it had close to 250,000 miles when its life ended in a wreck. Parts replacement was minimal with the exception of the tranny. Then came the '87, something like 225,000 miles with no major parts failures. I only got rid of the car because my careless father ruined the suspension on rough roads in canada (isnt it supposed to be the other way around?)

The came the '96 sentra. I am no longer a Nissan fan.

First at about 20,000 miles went the stereo. Nissan had "wisely" decided to put the drink holder so that the upper edge of a cup would be level with the cassette tape slot. One cup of hot coffee and a sharp brake from my wife destroyed that.

Then at about 70,000 miles went the alternator and battery.

All of these problems are forgiveable...so far.

Now at 107,000 miles the car is burning oil. I noticed first a large black greasy spot on the white paint above the muffler. Then when I went and checked the oil it was 2 full quarts low. Im sure it will need some kind of overhaul. This is terrible, I havent even paid off the darn loan yet. I have driven and serviced this car in every possible way similar to the Nissans of the 80s and 70s. Yet I am experiencing major problems at a mileage which the other cars seemed to have been at peak form. Well Nissan so much for "Progress".

PS In all fairness I must admit my wife was side swiped by a semi on the interstate at about 3000 miles. His insurance had to pay about 6000 dollars for body work that included some frame straightning. I wonder could this have contributed to engine problems at a later date? (isaacs@psci.net)

Model Reviewed: Sentra GXE 5-speed

Strength:

Reliability & Price! Fun to drive around town or back & forth to Orlando (500 miles away)... Completely loaded with options & still affordable!!

Weakness:

Very few weaknesses, but I wish everything was just a tiny bit taller & wider (cup holders, a little more room in the back seat). And I really dislike the change holder/fuse box cover that falls out everytime you pull it.

I just purchased my very first new car, a 2001 Nissan Sentra GXE, and I LOVE IT! I bought my first car back in 1993, a used 1991 base model Sentra. It was a great car! Reliable, fun to drive & I never had any major problems. The only reason I traded in my 1991 (with 137k, still running smooth & in great shape), was to cash in on all the great options available on the new 2001 with the great new body design! I've fallen in love with my new car. It's sporty & so much fun to drive! I recommend this car to everyone I know who's in the market for a new car but can't afford an overpriced Honda or Toyota. Gotta love Nissan!!

Everything. I love the look, the sound system, the sunroof (which has a special texture on it keep it from spoiling seats), the super comfortable seats, the speed of this thing (hard to tell the difference between this and a corvette). A MUST buy for anyone who knows anything about cars.

Weakness:

Nothing at all.

There is not much to say but I LOVE THIS THING. BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY.

Strength:

Reliable, great gas mileage

Weakness:

wiper blade showed streaks

Bought this car in 1997 based on my experience with the earlier model. It has proved to be good decision as the car has been highly reliable so far. Only factory recommended maintenance ( not dealer recommended ) has been done on it. No parts have been replaced or gone bad. Looks like I paid for the extended warranty for nothing. It has been consistently giving me an average of more than 30 mpg, which includes both city and freeway miles. I would say it is a definite value for money. Moreover, I saved >$500.00 per year on insurance compared to Honda Civic.

Strength:

126 HP engine is pretty peppy with the 5-speed, smooth trannie, nice exterior/interior colour options, the most attractive of the "road appliance" genre in Japanese cars, excellent fit/finish, supple ride, lots of room up front, excellent stereo and radio reception in remote areas.

Weakness:

Cheesy coinbox/fuse panel that easily come off, smallish legroom in back seats and small trunk. ABS should be standard on ALL new vehicles! Can live without it on a standard transmission.

I'm about 95% of the way to actually purchasing the Sentra GXE, as I have someone interested in my 1997 Civic. I've test-driven the car about 300 klicks, so I feel I can be fairly objective in my assessment. There are a lot of old Sentras still going on our roads, a testament to their reliabity and quality. I would have liked to stay with the Honda line-up , but the Sentra has the tar beat out of the new Civics! The Accord is another option, but it's about $7000 more (Canadian) than the Sentra. All in all, the new Nissan Sentra will do a lot to get the company in better financial waters...The secret's out!

1997 Civic EX sedan. Compared to my old Civic, the Sentra is like a racing car! Honda's styling on their entry-level car needs a LOT of improvement; the 2001's are pretty bland, and the suspension is a step backwards. (no double-wishbone - STUPID!!) Reliable as a sun rising every day, but not too exciting for someone approaching their "mid-life" crisis...

Strength:

Solid car, manual transmission is the best on the market(in this price range), very comfy, sporty feel, easy to take friends and go out

Weakness:

The only weakness I have with the car is the backseats. They are a tad small for the outside frame but I am not going to be sitting back there so should be ok. The stereo speakers are tad weak on the base, but that can be fixed easily.

I love the car. It feels nice and when I hit the gas it wants to go. I guess the most important thing to me was the feel of the car. It felt so nice and smooth compared to the other cars I tried. It felt a lot like a maxima believe it or not. The car is exactly what I was looking for in a vehicle. I love it and I will give another review when I get more experience. I am not expecting to have any problems with the car falling apart. Unlike fords and chevy's my friends have.

Model Reviewed: Sentra Se Sport

Strength:

Performance ,comfort and sheer value

Weakness:

Some tweaking of control layout needed

The long journey we took to arrive at this great car encompassed everything from SUV's to similiar cars like the Civic. My 1993 Civic Si was starting to show it's age and when we test drove the Sentra we knew we had found it's replacement. Opting for the SE with sport package we have been very impressed with Sentra's preformance. The 2.0 litre engine churns out 145 horse and the Infinity engine shows it's stuff when opening up on the open road. The suspension and handling match the engine in offering a smooth controlled ride. While the performance is a great plus, the interior is well laid out as well. The first thing we noticed was the comfort factor. My Honda was a lot of things and overly comfortable is not one of them. The Sentra is comfortable for both driver and passenger. The rear passengers will enjoy a comfortable ride provided both front seats are not pushed all the way back. The back seats offer a 60/40 split to allow trunk access. The Driver front seat has height control to allow greater comfort while driving. The controls while well designed, could have been laid out a little better. The heat/air controls are located underneath the Cd player and with the stick shift in the up position can make access difficult. Add a water bottle in the cup holder beneth that and access becomes even tougher.Despite this, the titanium trim on the dash really make the cars interior stand out. The CD player does pump out good sound but true audiophiles may be dissapointed, but good enough for my wife and I. The only other flaw is the arm rest/cd storage located between the front seats could be moved a little forward to allow one to rest their arm on more readily.
Driving this car is truly fun. If Maxima had a little brother this would be it. Add the sporty SE and you will have fun driving. The mileage I won't comment on as I have not really been able to accuratley judge it due to the short period we have had it. WE had the windows tinted to add that final sporty look and man it was worth it. I enjoy the look of other drivers as they look over and realize it was a Sentra they were admiring!!!

Reliability,Stable at higher speeds, nice pick up for such a small car

Weakness:

gas-milage could be better, back seat room

I purched this car with 111,000 miles for 3k in 1997. It now has 170,000 miles on the odometer. In that time I have replaced tires, exhaust, brakes, clutch, oil seals and power window drive( 1 window). Not bad for age of car and miles. I am really happy with my experience with the sentra. I drive 100 miles round trip to work daily and I feel like I can keep up with the big boys on the interstate.
