Model Reviewed: SE w Perf Pkg

Strength:

Drive it. Period. It's simply such a great drive. Handling is amazing, it's got lots of giddy' up and the steering is precise and solid.

Weakness:

1. If only we could have leather seats;
2. Its Name - for many, Sentra equals small economy car, but the SE/Perf Pkg version is a serious car for someone who doesn't need too much size, but enjoys a high quality drive. With leather seats, certainly deserves to have the Infinity logo on it!
3. Stereo boasts 180 Watts, but it's definitely not audiophile quality. Maybe I'll try with new speakers.

So here's the story: Had a 1998 Volvo and a 1992 Camry as second car. When we got our second child, my wife was able to convince me to switch to a minivan. We also realized that having a large sedan along with the van was useless, so we wanted to get a nice small car for my day to day driving, especially since I travel a lot for work. So we got rid of both the Volvo and the Camry and got a 2001 MPV and the Sentra (of course, I got it in 5-speed).

The Sentra would replace the Volvo for my business travel, so it better perform well. As it turns out, the Sentra is simply such a pleasure to drive that I quickly forgot about the Swedish boat. It's small and swift, it goes anywhere and really kicks butt getting there! Acceleration is quite impressive, with a nice sweet spot between 4.000 and 5,500 RPM. The performance suspension, along with the 16" wheels allows it to handle curves remarkebly well, with minimal body roll, while still smooth enough to make longer rides feel comfortable. The seats have great support and I especially enjoy the ample cabin storage compartments, a must for road warriors like myself.

What I thought I would miss the most about the Volvo is how it remains smooth and stable at higher speeds. I haven't had the chance to push the Sentra to the limit yet, but I can say that at 150 KM/h (90 MPH) it's much smoother than any other car I owned in the past - but I can't wait to see results at, say, 110 MPH or higher if possible.

The car has so many other impressive tech goodies, like the limited slip differential (which will come handy this winter), front strut stabilizer, variable debit exhaust, fog lights, just to name a few.

While there are many pluses to this car, I think that it's overall greatest strength is the way it drives. You simply feel that you are driving a serious, solid machine. The test drive is what convinced me.

Now for the wish list : give it some leather seats, a real sound system and a better choice of colours. Heck, throw in an Infinity logo while you're at it.

In conclusion, I think that Nissan has ma a successful attempt at catering to the needs of a niche clientele : someone looking for a high quality, well equiped sedan with excellent performance and handling, but who doesn't need the car to be big.

Volvo S-70 (that's right! read story below) Mazda Protege ES (w GT pkg) and Protege 5 - nice job on the exterior design, but when I drove it, it didn't feel like a serious car, but rather like something made for Barbie. Acura Civic, uh 1.6 EL.

Strength:

Zippy performance, great gas mileage, not bad size interior either.

Weakness:

The driver side window! I almost broke my arm trying to roll that thing up! I'm told this is a defect. Lubricating won't help. Estimate to repair is $200 plus.

Best first car ever! I highly recommend this car for reliability, cost, mileage, and performance. The only repairs I had were brakes at 140K, CV boots, muffler and pipe, and battery replacement. And the performance was such a surprise! Even with an automatic, I could pass every car on the road (even if that occasionally meant downshifting to 2nd on a steep incline). If you want zippy performance and don't care about the ho-hum radio system, haphazard placement of the cupholders, and the basic-no-frills interior, this is the car to get! The best kept secret on the road!

Sentra was my first car. Just traded it in for a sportier and newer look but I'll always have a fondness for my sentra. Would definitely not dismiss buying one in the future.

Strength:

Motor, suspension, nimbleness, invisible to cops, price, reliability, and low insurance

Weakness:

rattles, cheap body, hard to work on.

Great Sleeper. At 156k it still runs great and out performs most other cars on the road. Stock suspension is great. Mine has eibach pro kit springs and tokiko hp struts for even better handling. The stock 14x5.5 alloy wheels can be fitted with 195/55/14 dunlop sp sport 8000s for racecar like grip. great seats and the gearbox is like hot butter on your breakfast toast. The red and grey paintjobs will oxidise badly. It's been great, but with so many miles on it I'm selling it to buy a 99 sentra se.

I would only compare it overall to a prelude or integra gs-r. performance compares to an a3 GTI VR6.
