Strength:
Great color of RED. Sporty.
Weakness:
see review above. I will NEVER purchase another GMC product!!!!!! What a way to learn a HARD lesson on those who you THOUGHT you could trust by their name. As far as I'm concern ALL alero's are as sour as a lemon. GMC should hang their heads in shame for putting such car on the road where LIVE people are! They will be hearing my voice on the other end bright and early Monday morning! I bought my alero in March, 2002. The front brakes have always made a noise. A week ago i put it in the shop for what they said would be 5 days, it ended up in there for "8" days instead!! The front of the car started making a noise like the wheel bearings were out of whack, and when I make sharp turns there's a gurgling noise and the tires squeek. Took my alero back to the dealership where they told me it was the rack and pinion!!! This was replaced under my extended warranty (thank god) as the price was almost 1000 to fix and with the loaner vehicle given me. When I drove the car on the lot to test to make sure it was fixed a NEW noise and thumping was noticed. My mechanic informed me that GMAC had issued a BULLETIN concerning the scraping/scrunching noise from the front ofthe vehicle at low speeds. When asked if this was covered under my Ex. warranty the answer was NO! When my dealership called GMAC, their response was "we will not fix, but we will give a SMALL discount on new tires" what a JOKE!!! This is a FACTORY problem that they refuse to take care of!!! They ADMITTED it was factory error when they OFFERED a discount! Needless to say that's when my dealership "GUY" also gave me the cold shoulder! So, this will be the last vehicle bought at Dan Cummins. The promise they tell you at sale time are far more different than what they actually do.......... go figure. roomy, nice trunk size, fun to drive.
Weakness:
as listed in my review. I have also had to replace 2 gaskets at 65000 miles. Also I have replaced the computer chip twice! When I last brought it to the dealer the woman behind me (also driving an allero) told me she was at 32000 miles-on her second alternator and possibly there for her third. I'm going foreign soon! styling great V-6 engine price!!!!!!!!
Weakness:
tire replacement costs quality I have owned my Alero since May of 2000. It has 65k miles. No major problems until now. It started with a little leak a few days ago, now I have to have my head gasket replaced along with others things. THANK GOODNESS FOR EXTENDED WARRANTIES!!!! I am a college student who does not have $1500 to have at the last minute. I love my car, but at 65k miles, this is ridiculous. |

Strength:
-pickup -tires -ABS, traction control, nice handling for such a low price! -style - its a hot looking car inside and out - dressing up the car a bit, does alot. Not so hard to find kits, and part swaps to make the Alero look sweeter or different
Weakness:
-premium radio could have been better -brakes could be more solid -ABS and traction control light thing Honestly, I love my car. Bought it June 1999, and never looked back. Things I like. When it comes to style Oldsmobile did good. This is a gorgeous car. I still sometimes turn around as I walk away from it just to get another look at it. Its sleak, curvy, bulky where it needs it. And the front and back are well designed. Tires. I drive like a madman, and after nearly 3 1/2 years, finally these babies need to be replaced and I only rotated them twice. Pickup, I have the 4 cylinder GX model (150 hp), and the pickup is great. My friend has a V6 and he says its even better. The interior is beautiful. When the Mustang came out with 2-tone in 94 I loved it, and now I got the same in my Alero. The problems I've had. My battery died after 100K. That's fine. Brakes, ya, I've needed a brake job twice in 100K. That does seem like alot, but I do alot of rush hour driving so I can't say its GMs fault or not. I do brake hard. I do sometimes seem to have my ABS and traction control lights come on, but if I restart, its gone. Just an annoyance really. *This is the first year for this car, and I honestly expected alot of problems. You know what, the good sooo out weighs the bad. Girls have always loved it, its constantly catching peoples eyes, and I even had one before anyone knew what they were, and you wouldn't believe the stares. However, this car does come with GMs CRAPPY WARRANTY. In summary, if GM keeps the Alero on after Olds sinks, as they've hinted, I want my next car to be a Alero V6 stick. So ya, I love my car. Strength:
Good mileage, tight steering and comfortable ride.
Weakness:
terrible brake system, the rotors are garbage and seem to warp the more or harder you brake, avoid hard stops and long brake rides. Bought the car new in Dec of 2000. The rorors are terrible after 44,000km they had to be turned..never heard of that before. The button fell out of the gear shifter one day, that was pathetic..now at 74,000km the heater blower motor is finished. The car handles great its an GX coupe and the mileage is top notch..all in all the car is o.k but if this is quality..then I am going to the imports then. Olds Alero
I bought my 2000 Alero with 24,000 miles on it in 2001. It had an air leak problem when I bought it that created a whistling sound when driving at high speeds. I had that fixed immediately, and the dealer simply said it was a bad seal. I didn't have any more problems until a year later when out of the blue one day the car wouldn't start. The engine would turn over but it wouldn't fire. I had to have it towed to a dealership where it started immediately. ?? Now, $100 worth of "Diagnostic labor" later the dealership says they can't find anything wrong. Very frustrating! |

Olds Alero
Strength:
I do like the looks, power was ok but could be better for a v6. I thought there were a lot of strengths but I lost faith in that car.
Weakness:
Brakes build quality car falling apart in first year the kicker was when the dome light fell down----what a joke. Too many problems to list. The most dangerous problems were the brakes/rotors. The rotors warped 3 times in the first 6 months. Olds Customer NO-SERVICE told me to try and win the lemon law when I mentioned. it. Guess what, eight months after I bought the vehicle I WON THE LEMON LAW. Olds even had an engineer try to fix the rotor problem and I was told it was a design defect. I was glad to see that car gone as I believe it is death on wheels. PLEASE DO NOT BUY AN ALERO, it's not worth any special deal you can get. I bought the car new in 2000 and regret that I wasted my time and time and time (infinity) at the dealership for repairs. Alero
Strength:
Nice outside appearance. Very sleek.
Weakness:
Fuel pump, brakes, wiring, noisy, too rough of a ride. What a LEMON!! I bought the car due to the Oldsmobile name -- what problems I've had. It has left me stranded 4 times -- won't start (once was on vacation!!) I've had the fuel pump replaced twice, the fuel pump wiring replaced once, and now they say my fuel injectors are clogged! I only have 33,000 miles on it. ALso, had the brakes replaced due to high, aggravating squels. The dash board popped up one day; the a/c vent quit blowing, and I still have wind coming in the back passenger window SOMEWHERE! I DO NOT recommend the ALERO to anyone! Mileage 27.5 combines, up to 34 highway Sound System (with the Sun & Sound option) Ecotec Engine (Smooth, powerful, long lasting maintanence featurs) Price & Warrenty
Weakness:
Steering feel at highway speeds (minor). Only 1 good cup holder (the second one is completely useless) I picked the Alero after careful scrutinizing other GM vehicles (I get a discount). I like the style and it comes standard with everything. I've put just about 10000 miles and really like it. The 2.2L Ecotec engine is very peppy and gets great gas mileage. It's comfortable on long rides, the sound system is awesome, the oil filter is unbelievably easy to change, and the with the rebates and warranty (2750 & 60/5) GM is giving - a great value. The car is plenty quick and very smooth at 90mph. The steering is great at lower speeds but stiff at highway speeds. The owners manual says this is a feature, but I don't care for it. Also, my seat belt light has been stuck on since about 3000 miles. Side note: the owners manual does not disclose the location of the oil filter!, but its right on the top, in the front) Similar Products Used: Been driving Pickups, minivans, and SUV's for the last 15 years. I switched to the Alero primarily for the mileage. |

Strength:
Nice looking car, like the warning light system that tells me when the tires are low on pressure and it's time to change the oil.
Weakness:
gear shift knob; cruise control; interior quality (upholstery, mouldings, ill-fitting windshield, trunk liner & carpet); location of front cup holder is useless Researched this car before buying, and felt real good about it. Have previously steered away from American made cars as they just didn't compare with Honda or Nissan. This car looked great and seemed to run smooth. BUT, have had it for 1 1/2 years now and would love to go back to a foreign made vehicle, but I think I'm stuck with this for awhile. At 30K miles, the cruise control went out. The mouldings do not fit tight, including the trunk lining, the windshield leaks when I go through the carwash, and the quality of the seatcover fabric is terrible. The kicker for me was the other day when the button just fell off the gear shift! I have never heard of this happening, nor have 3 mechanics that I've spoken with. I contacted GM and they had not had any complaints of this either. It's not covered under the warranty, there has been no recall for this item, and there is no one to take care of it but ME! I definately see this as a manufacturers defect! I cannot believe this is MY fault, I am very disappointed that I will have to fork over at least $500 for parts and labor to correct the problem! Plus fork over for a rental car while the dealer takes care of these problems. Has anyone else heard of this problem with the gear shift button?
