Oldsmobile GLS
Strength:
V6 Engine, overall appearance, roomy
Weakness:
Windows, fuses, door material bubbles from the heat (cheap), spends more time at the shop then on the road, noisy ride When I looked at the Alero it had everything that I wanted: V6 engine, spoiler and sunroof. I loved the way it looked and drove. Unfortunately, six months into the lease things started going wrong. My main problem has been with the drivers side window. The window feel into the door (of course when it was mid winter) and the motor for the window had to be replaced. And at times when it rained the window wouldn't work. I also had to have the fuse panel replaced. I also have found that when I get the tires rotated the low tire pressure light goes on and I have to reset it. I will say that it does ride well and I haven't had any problems with the transmission or engine or brakes. Overall, I am very disappinted with the car and can't wait to get rid of it. Mayee there's a reason Oldsmobile is going out of business. Similar Products Used: 97 Honda Civic |

Weakness:
little bit sound inside when on highway Even though I havn't owned this car very long, I'm very suprised at a lot of the bad things people are talking about. I love this car. The look, the power, the sound, and the comfort. It had a little under 40,000 thousand miles on it. I bought it as a one owner car and the man who previously had it said that he had no major problems, just normal wear and tear. It looks fantastic. It drives exceptionally well and the acceleration is awesome. The leather seats, spoiler and sun roof make it a sporty looking affordable practical car. Hopefully if there are any bugs, they are all worked out. Similar Products Used: 1997 neon 2000 intrepid |

Fast, sporty, cheap. Raced a brand new Buick Regal, 1996 Intrepid, 2001 F-250 power stroke diesel, Nissan Pathfinder, 2002 Tahoe, and haven't lost yet. Al had V-6 engines or larger and my Alero only has a four Cylinder.
Weakness:
haven't found any. I love my Alero. I got a great deal paying only $9000, and car only had 9,000 miles on it. Haven't had any problems. I would recomend this car to anyone. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
Big trunk for all of my sports equip; decent handling (minus the brakes); so far decent engine performance (holding breath)
Weakness:
BRAKES (!!!), ROTORS (!!!), WINDSHIELD SEEMS TO BE COMING LOOSE, POWER WINDOW MOTOR, SEAT MOTOR, DASHBOARD RATTLES, SUNGLASSES HOLDER COMING OFF, HOOD RATTLES WHEN IDLING, ORIGINAL BATTERY CORRODED ITSELF AND EXPLODED....MORE TO COME I'M SURE... We Alero-folk appear to be a bunch of suckers... I just read some reviews of fellow owners like myself and cannot believe the prevalence of brake/rotor problems with this car. To this point I just thought mine was defective, but this is absolutely ridiculous. Have had the rotors replaced 2x and brakes countless times, standing today at 70K miles since 1999. Was taking it to the dealer to fix every thing that went wrong but now realize that their opinion was tainted by corporate, and they would not admit design/materials to be defective when they clearly were. Better off with a trusted private mechanic--but this is costing us tons of cash nonetheless! Those brakes are truly "defective", and I plan on trying my best to get GM to listen, though probably in vain, like the rest of the little people out there. Had to have them completely done AGAIN 4K miles ago and somehow they started squeaking AGAIN last week. I can't afford to maintain this car. I currently drive two cars (other a 98 Isuzu Trooper 4wd SUV) and a big disappointment after time. My trooper with same mileage on it (est 70K) has NEVER had to have new brakes NOR does it make the wind noise, dashboard noise, hood rattling noise and other random noises the alero does. Also, has anyone ever had to have their driver's side power window crap out? Mine cost over $400 to fix, at only 50K miles. To me that is another defect. nothing else!!! And how about the power seat? Used that button MAYBE 10 times TOTAL in over 3 years (only one driving so never changes) and it broke once at 28K miles and AGAIN at about 50K (I'm NOT fixing it again--seat stays where it is for a cost of over $300 clams! Forget it!). And not like I keep breaking it with my big butt b/c I weigh a lot--I'm only 130 lbs for goodness sake, not a linebacker. I am sad to say that after the first 36,000 this car seems programmed by GM to self-destruct, inspector gadget style. Even more sad, I doubt I will ever buy an american made vehicle again, given my experience. Loved it up until the true value behind the somewhat reasonable sticker price starting making itself knows. I guess you get what you pay for. I'm trying the lemon law route.... Similar Products Used: 88 Olds Cutlass Cierra (back in the day when olds were made of metal not plastic!) |

Strength:
V6 engine is fairly strong and provides decent acceleration and torque Styling is modern, but not overdone Quality...ooops, wrong area (See weaknesses)
Weakness:
Quality, typical of GM. Worse than the quality problem is the lack of GM to admit or remedy a solution without alienating the customer. This is typical and these two vehicles are our last General Motor vehicles. 3 years ago I would have swore I would never buy a "foriegn" car. However, they will be the first lots I visit next year. Decent car, terrible customer service. My wife and I bought a 2000 Alero and a 2001 Grand Am, and of course we should have known they would have much of the same problems. Some of the problems are well documented on here already... * New rotors at 30,000 miles due to defect * Resister pack failure causing some blower settings to no longer function * Hard to close trunk * Vent valve failure, causing check engine light And the grand daddy of them all... * Tire/Wheel noise, documented by GM as a problem and they were unable to fix for years. Took our car in at 30,000 miles to document the problem (had been getting worse since about 20,000 miles) and they did not fix the problem. Pontiac Dealer told me that there was no fix for me cars yet and had no idea when there would be. I find out last month they have a fix and they will not honor fixing the condition because the car has 50,000 miles on it now. Well? Was I not supposed to drive until you fixed the problem 2 years later? In short, DO NOT BUY GM Similar Products Used: Multiple Cavaliers, Grand Am GT, Corolla |

Strength:
Acceleration, engine dependability, quiet running, fairly comfortable seats (although back seats are stiff), and sporty looks.
Weakness:
The paint and treatments could have been better. The paint is already beginning to chip and peel on my 2000. My initial cruise control kept malfunctioning but now that, that was replaced. I have had no problems since (1 1/2 yrs). I purchased this car, because my previous one was destroyed. My friend LOVES his Alero, so after test driving several cars, finally settling on myself getting a new alero as well. I have had some drawbacks but nothing too major. I did have a problem with the lowest two levels of my blower not working but that was a cheap "chip" repair, was only around $50. Similar Products Used: 1998 Chevy Cavalier LS (High 4) |

Great ride. Spacious backseat for a sedan. Driver's access to heat/air, stereo, etc. Huge trunk!
Weakness:
Cruise Control won't work periodically. But it always comes back on. I have had nothing but good come from my car. I bought it used at 61,000 miles. Previous owner had no problems either. The ONLY slight problem I've had is the cruise control not working periodically. All in all, I love my Alero! |

Nothing.
Weakness:
Beware! Alero is built to self-destruct once out of warranty. At 40,000 miles I had to replace lower intake gaskets at a cost of $600+. Oldsmobile's response..."too bad." This is a common problem on the '99 Alero and Olds knows about it (they've redesigned the replacement gaskets, what does that tell you?) Do not buy an Alero! They self-destruct once out of warranty and Oldsmobile refuses to do anything about them! Similar Products Used: Honda Accord. Hands down a better car! |

rotors, blinkers, speakers, paint job, cruise control, air conditioning, dash board Back in Dec 1999, I leased a new 2000 Alero. It was my first car, and I was in love. Now, 3 years later...my car is a mess. The rotors have ALWAYS been a problem. I've had them fixed at least 5 times only to have the same problem come back a few weeks later. Since hitting 30,000-40,000 miles, my car has begun to fall apart. The paint has chipped off of the door frames, leaving the exterior looking not so nice. My back right speaker only occasionally works. My cruise control works only when the on/off switch is held down. The terror continued at 50,000 miles. My air conditioning doesn't work at the first two levels. The best of the best is that my dash board has peeled up. Of course, this all occurred after my 36,000mile warrenty ended. When I questioned a local dealership about fixing these DEFECTS free of charge...the answer was always no. I was quoted at $700 to replace the dash!!! Now, my lease is up and unfortunately I am over on mileage. I now had to buy my car. I purchased an extended warranty. Finally, after giving more $$ to the company...my problems are being fixed. But, I'm sure they'll come back!! |
