Strength:
Nice look (most of the people think it is a japanese car), comfort, good mileage, good engine, fast enough (up to 120mph theoretically, but I did not drive it above 90mph). Very good price to quality ratio with all the equipment found on the export version
Weakness:
Some squeazing, not enough insulation in the trunk. And be careful not to apply to much acceleration on roundabouts because of the large torque. Bought almost new (demo car) with only 1,200 km. Has now 76,000 km. Very nice car, slightly less good than equivalent european cars of the same class regarding handling and performances.Comfortable, lots of niceties, but some problems (all fixed under GM warranty) like cruise control switch out of order or ignition start-up interferences with cell phones transmitters. Not a GM part, but the CD player (which comes as a regular item, like the leather seats, on export Aleros) does not play any longer most of the CDs after 4 years of trouble-free operation. It LOOKS Great! and I love the V6 engine!
Weakness:
Too many to list.... the Brakes, The driver side window, the altenator, and the rattling once I hit 77mph I have experianced too many problems to list. Within a year I have spent more than 1,000 dollars in repairs ranging from the brakes to the driver side window. The car is not worth half of what I paid for it. Please let me know if anyone if planning to do something about it! Similar Products Used: Topaz, |

Alero GLS
Strength:
BEAUTIFUL car. I have people asking me what it is all the time. I get guesses like Lexus or Acura all the time. This car is very fast for what it is and it handles really well. Gas mileage isn't that bad for a V6, and the price was good.
Weakness:
brakes, bearings, ABS system, rattles, intake/exhaust gaskets, poor quality leather seating, heater fan. I'm seeing so many negative things about this car out there. The truly horrible thing is, I don't doubt any of them. I bought my car in Feb 2001 w/22k and it now has 69k. I thought I was the only one getting lame stories from GM and the dealership about this. It seems like the major issues out there are brake rotors, ABS, bearings, and a symphony of rattles that develops in this car within a relatively short timeframe. Has anyone had their intake and exhaust gaskets start to seep on theirs? Also, FYI, this brake problem isn't unique to the Alero. It exists on the other cars based on this chassis (Malibu and Grand AM). If I had only known that when buying. A friend of mine forced the dealership to buy back her Malibu because of brakes a couple years ago. The question is, what is everyone doing about it? I'd love to find out that someone is sueing or considering sueing GM for this product. That seems like the only line that will get a productive response from them. If anyone's pursuing this avenue, please let me (and all the other alero owners that got hosed) know about it. Class-action finally got the tobacco companies. If they can be hit, so can GM. My email is jhuseby79@msn.com. Please feel free to contact me for anything regarding the Alero. |

Strength:
It looks good, handles well in the snow, i like that the lights turn on and off when needed, and off if they are left on for twenty minutes when the car is off. I like the ride(main reason i baught the car). Its quick in the high end.
Weakness:
problems, problems, problems. Not worth the aggrivation. oldsmobile has done nothing for me even though i have written them many times(before they folded). Really, really bad depreactiation. I have had my alero for about three years. I like the car for what its worth. the problem is its not worth much. I have had nothing but problems with the car and the dealer. i owned the car for about three months before the place i baught it at went under. I now have to drive thirty minutes to the closest dealer. when i owned the car for about six months that dealer got my car in an accident. Oldsmobile did nothing for me. I had a rental for two months. and i was still paying for the car i owned and they crashed while not in my possesion. It was in the dealer at the time for one of the four times i have had the brakes done, which they charged me $500.00 for. i also have had the power stearing pump replaced twice, the lower seal on my manifold replaced, the power window regulator replaced, the blower replaced, no to mention the car leaks when i leave the wipers up and its raining, trunk doesn't close right, the emergency brake just stopped working(won't rachet and lock). Plus when i bring to the dealer half the time they have no idea what the hell is wrong with it and they charge me a diagnostic fee. I can't see how anyone could give this car a really good review. I guess they got a better car than i did. My car can't even be traded for anything near what the cost of owning it is. Similar Products Used: not similar but better value: ford festiva. Small crappy looking car. no problem for the three years i owned always reliable and good on gas(which the 6 cyl. alero is deff. not). |

Strength:
looks nice, stereo, the ride, gas mileage on the four cylinder, fold down rear seats for my bass.
Weakness:
ignition....be nice if it was standard. I've had this car for about a month now...i bought it with 85 000km...which would be like 50 000 miles.....only prob i have had so far is my ignition switch not turning al the way off...getting stuck up on the ACC spot.....so sometimes i have to give the dash a quick thump and it usually pops right out...lol.....as for the rest....no probs so far...everything seems to be working fine....no leaks, blower works, brakes seem to be fine(i hear the brakes are a rotor and pads problem, gm brand) once u have to change them....put different brand on and u should be fine....thats why u people have been have the multiple probs...u go and get your brakes done under warrenty and they just put the same stuff back on.....car rides nice, looks nice....stereo is kickass....even tho i have put my own sound system in(subs, and cd).never had no probs with the trunk. clean and nice car altogether....mine is the four cylinder GX model....i got few extras...but extras are not a good thing...too much money to fix when they go wrong. Nice look and has many extras that other cars do not have.
Weakness:
Not a trustworthy car, I would be afraid to take it very far even though it only has 35,000 miles. I thought I was buying quality when I purchased my Oldsmobile Alero, but I guess I was wrong! I've never had more trouble with a car than I've had with this one. After reading several reviews, I am experiencing the same problems that most everyone else is. I've had problems with the brakes, my heating doesn't work on the first two setting, and I have my car in the shop several other times for other things. I will never buy another Oldsmobile. I owned a Hyundai before I bought this car and it was ten times the car that my Alero is (and half the price). |

Looks Good
Weakness:
Too many!!! This car has been pure headach! I bought this car in Jan02, and since then my brakes have been worn 3 times, it is now Feb03 1 year later and my car is in the shop right now, again with the brakes completely worn-they were just replaced in Nov02. 2 days ago I had my rotors replaced, because there was serious vibration and grinding, and at times the car wouldn't stop at all. When the mechanic was done he said that my wheel bearings had to be replaced, which shouldn't have to be done until 120,000 kms or so. After many visits to the dealer with problems such as : Rear defrost not working, dome light staying on all the time, windows leaking, brakes replaced 4 times, and rotors twice. The first time the brakes were fixed it was on them due to a caliper problem, but the rest has been out of my pocket. On top of all this, while driving on the highway recently the car started to accelerate, I tried the brakes but they failed, I got up to 140 kms/hr before finally the brakes worked. They are taking my car back today, because I am affraid it will take my life-it's just not safe I wouldn't recomend this car to anyone. I think I may no what the problem is, and hopefully someone can relate, my lights are on constantly - ABS, Track Off, Service Vehicle Soon, and my Emergency Brake they are all on. Does anyone else feel like when they are driving, that the emegency brake is on? I think this is why the brakes, rotors, and wheel bearings are going on these cars, because the computer is malfunctioning (possibly because of leakage, I've seen a lot of complaints about that) The computer is applying the brakes, and we are over riding them, causing these problems - and I think they know it too. To everyone who is asking for help, print all of these complaints off, and throw it on your dealers desk, and refuse to leave without a new car, that is pretty much what I 've done, and if enough people do the same, they will have no choice than to recall this deathtrap. |

Strength:
Sharp look, real steal in price, lots of affordable extras include spoiler, roof, fogs, ABS disc, etc. The 0% interest rates by GM is a worth thousands, great dash layout, huge trunk, the gear box is designed by Opel and is really great to play with, the sports suspension is among the best in the industry for the size of car(extra), its a smooth ride and a plesure to drive and if you get bored turn up your 200 watt sound system, open the roof for some sun, tighten your grip on the thick leather steering wheel and let her out on a dry curvey highway that was made for cars like this.
Weakness:
The seats could be more supportive, the 6 cyliner burns to much fuel. The four could be faster compared to Nissan 4 bangers. It's not a sports car. There should be an arm rest in the back seats, the trunk doesn't close easily, and the rear defrosting system leaves the inside of the windows wet at times which should be cleaned for maximum visibility. The competition can't compete when it comes to matching all the extras that are included in that price. This car is attractive, dependable, great value for your money and overall a real pleasure to own. And I like the Olds brand, it was about time they came out of thier slump. Take one out for test spin if your in the market but make sure it has the sports suspension. By the way when comparing remember your calculator when visiting the competition. Keep in mind the intrest charges offered by GM and if you drive alot I would recommend the 4 banger stick, it saves you a bunch on fuel costs and it's spiffy too. Well, all in all one of the best total packages to come out of North America in a while. Well done GM! stereo system (had combo cd player and cassette), sporty look, handles nicely.
Weakness:
umm.... didn't have it long enough to find any. I loved my car! I say loved because last week I was in a head on collision and the car was totalled. If you are thinking about getting an Alero then don't worry about the body structure, it handles well. It had good gas milage. Very nice sporty look. Similar Products Used: '91 Ford Probe |
