Strength:
it looked good before it was totalled
Weakness:
the air bag problem is a big one i guess Hi I'm writing this for a friend. She owned a 2001 Alero until it was totaled two weeks ago in a front end accident. The front bumper came to rest near the windshield. Luckily she suffering not major injuries (8 staples in her head, cut eye lid, huge bruises on legs, but she is breathing!!) She was wearing her seat belt BUT her air bag did not open!!!!!!! There is a small opening where the air bag is located and her steering column is cracked some but the airbag is still inside the compartment!!! Does anyone else know of this happening? |

Strength:
can't seem to think of one
Weakness:
see above. the list goes on and on and on and on I own, or will in just 32 short payments, a GM OLDSMOBILE LEMON. I wish the Lemon law was in effect here in Canada. Like many of the previous reviews, I too have had umpteen brake issues with my car. My dealer makes it clear he thinks I am a complainer, and will hardly address me any more - and when he does, he's disrespectful. I am beyond fed up with my 'new' car. If I wanted to pay service bills on a car, I would have kept my old Hyundai. It is not acceptable that GM dealers blame these brake issues on manufacturing defects. There is a simple solution. Fix the defect once and for all. I guess it's cheaper for all of us pissed off customers to be unsatisfied, than to fix the thousands of lemons they have solicited us into buying with all the great rates. I will not return to buy another GM product, nor will any of my friends or family, or anyone within yelling distance - because I have made it my mission to ensure that anyone around me knows what crap GM produces. This car has been nothing but a nightmare since the day I bought it. At 24,000 miles the lifters and followers in the engine have had to be replaced. As I type the car is in the shop. I took the car in 3 times for the same problem and it is now getting fixed. Driver side window is not working wind noise is so bad that you have to turn the radio up so that you do not hear it. I dont know about you but I would not recommed this car to anyone. I am now trying to dump this car in hopes of finding something that is worth the money. |

Strength:
Nice looking, handles well
Weakness:
Rotors, antenna, radio buttons wearing off, start up problems Now I know that I am not the only one experiencing problems with an Alero. This coming October will be 2 years I have had this peice of crap and I am looking to trade it in. I am already on my 3rd set of rotors, replaced the intake gasket that was seeping. Is anyone else having problems with the internal connection for your antenna? I have been to the dealer 2 times to have that put back in. Or what abuot the buttons on your radio wearing off? I have some start up problems. Usually if the car sits overnight or something it takes a bit longer for it to turn over. I thought I was buying a great car, but obviously I was wrong. It stinks that I will take a loss trading this in, but I would rather get rid of it now instead of having the constant problems. |

Nice looking car - sporty yet not too sporty.

Please see above! Need I say more... This car is the biggest piece of junk on the road. I'd take a Pinto or a Yugo over this car anyday. You could not pay me enough to ever drive this car again! If you think the dealer customer service is bad, try calling GM. They have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! NONE. What a piece of junk. I bought this car new in early January of 2000 as my first new car after getting out of college and working in the real world for awhile. I truly thought I was buying a quality car; boy was I wrong! After two weeks I had to have the brake pads and rotors replaced. That was just the first time out of 6 times. Even after the brakes were replaced they never worked very well! You could barely stop the car. Next, the door seals started leaking. Whenever it rained the interior of my car was soaked! The dealer just couldn't figure out why...I was told they couldn't find a leak in the seals. Hhmm, not the brightest mechanics at this place! This never was fixed and I consistently had a wet interior whenever it rained. Then the entire electrical system went to crap. I'd be drviing along and all the gages would go to zero and stop working. The speedometer wouldn't even work! Gee, I guess I'll just guess how fast I'm going, that works with the local police - right? This happened at least 2X's per month! The dash lights hardly ever worked. This too was great in the evening when I'm trying to drive. Really safe....Damn GM Crap Product. The high-powered power steering hose went out at 40,000 miles. Not covered under warranty of course since Olds only offered a 36,000 mile warrnaty. This little repair cost me over $450. There was a horrible grinding/squeaking noise whenever you turned a corner or slowed down. Guess what?!?!? The dealer just didn't know why! I was shocked to hear that....NOT. Then the coolant intake gasket went. A fluid level indicator light kept going on in the car and once again the mechanics just couldn't figure out why. Gee, could it be because of all this coolant that is leaking out of the car under it! That's much too difficult for this place! The gasket repair was almost $600. Driving at speeds over 65 mph was like asking for death. One bump and you'd go into the ditch. One could barely keep the darn car on the road it handled so poorly. Let's talk about the rattles this car made! You'd think the whole car was falling apart whenever you drove it. I think everything rattled in that beast. Where did they get the leather for the seats? Cheapest darn leather I've ever owned! One year after having the car the leather was already cracking! After about a 1 1/2 years, the suspension system was shot. It was like riding in a wagon in the old west! If I didn't always wear my seatbelt I would have hit my head on the roof of the car since you were whipped around in the car so much from every little bump in the road. I felt like Laura on Little House on the Prairie going to Mankato with Ma and Pa in the buggy! The key would get stuck in the ignition at the ACC mark. I'd spend 5 minutes trying to get the key out of the ignition of this Death-Trap. The gas gage NEVER worked! Kind of an important feature! Went from full to 1/2 tank in two miles. One never truly knew how much gas there was. Not that the darn thing got very good gas mileage to begin with! The transmission slipped and the engine misfired ALL the time. Snow would get built up in the wells of the tires and cause driving to be almost impossible. This isn't good when one lives in Minnesota! The darn thing didn't start very well. I'd have to turn the thing over 5-10 times whenever it was warm out to get the thing to start. I traded the thing in after almost three years for way less than I owed on it. I didn't care I was taking a loss, I didn't want to drive that thing ever again. This was the best thing I ever did! I'm rid of the Death Trap. Here come another rant on this stupid vehicle. I posted a review some time ago and it wasn't a good one. I can say that I won the lemon law against Olds and DO NOT be afraid to file a complaint, check your manual for the procedure. I had a 2000 model and am very shocked Olds are still making these death boxes. I feel sorry for every person I see driving a new Alero. I have talked to many owners of Alero's and the brake/rotor problems are in every model year. I have had many good vehicle's from GM and would consider buying another one after doing some extensive reserch on the vehicles track record. I am not buying a GM product anytime soon and I am still very bitter on how I was treated. GM needs to learn they are not the only game in town, if you know what I mean?? DO NOT be inticed by the "good deals" on the Aleros. YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. |

Great LOOKS really beautiful inside and sexy out side Good fuel economy but there is room for improvement
Weakness:
Lacks power (I should have gotten the 6 Cyln.). Wind noise beyond 130km/h (80m/h) Radling noises at low speeds on bumpy roads only (bearable but can be illuminated as they make the car sound cheap) Wow, all the reviews I read. Well, I bought my car in Dec 2001 but its 2002 model 4 Cyl. Fully loaded (without leather seats). I bought the car brand new with 45km on it and now I have 65000km (40000miles). So far, I have not experienced any problems at all. Car is amazing and exceeded my expectations. I did my own oil/filter changes and the car never been to a garage or the dealer. So far, I‘ve replaced the brake pads only once. Besides the oil/filter changes and once for brake pads I had nothing done to it. I really use my car everyday and in Montreal temperatures are extreme. Either I am a lucky guy or some of the cars come with many factory defects due to bad assembly I guess (cause can’t all those folks having problems be wrong). Similar Products Used: Fully loaded Honda Civic 4 doors. I prefer the Alero much roamier and more powerfull. However, Honda beats Alero in fuel economy (no comparison) |
