lots of rattles and clunks, poor seats, engine can be heard through fire wall on accelleration My alero has 97000km. The car was great up untill 20000km. That,s about when it all started. My car has had: 5 sets of brakes, the computer has been reprogrammed 6 times,5 windshieds, strut mounts have been changed twice, outer tierod ends, all four wheel bearings, both front coilsprings, the paint is chipping off of the hood, gear selector nob replaced, interior light repaired 3 times, rear speakers repaired. Now the power steering is on it's way out and I am looking at a new rack and pinion. I have replaced every tire. This car has been impecibly maintained by the dealership! There are many more odds and ends. I also have every reciept to back up my claims. It was all fun and games untill the warrenty ran out. If you are considering buying one, please do your homework. |

Good power, good feature content.

Reliability, reliability, reliability! Fit and finish as well. Well this car served us well up until the warranty expired which was almost a year ago. After that everything went to crap. The car has been in the shop every 6 weeks for the past 6 months. First coolant was leaking into the intake manifold. Then a wheel bearing went. As I write this, it's in again for another wheel bearing and the control arm bushings need to be replaced. I would recommend everyone to stay away from this car, unless you only plan to own for less then 3 years. The biggest downer is that I want to get rid of this car, but the resale value is so low it's not worth selling. Grrrr.... Similar Products Used: Acura 1.7 EL. Toyota Corolla |

Handling
Weakness:
Where to start? Never buy new, never buy used. Rotors warped, especially while driving through mountains (machined 3 times, under warranty). ABS failed to work during cold snaps (fixed under "good faith"). Back seat floor flooded when driven through rain (fixed under warranty). While in shop, drivers side window motor "unexpectedly" failed, replaced under good faith, but I was without a car for 4 days waiting for a part. CD player failing (completely random). Rattle in the console. NOW... the power-assist steering has failed. Awaiting the assessment. What picks me, it's that it seems all the parts are due to fail right at warranty expiration (I am at 67000km and 37 months). Feel free to browse GM's website, it mentions that if you don't buy an extended warranty, you're "taking your chances". What a statement from a car manufacturer. |

My drivers side window doesn't work (read someone else's review) Wow, I was really suprised reading all these reviews. I bought my Alero new in 1999 and have not had any major problems except my drivers side window just recently went out and the part you can only get from GM and it costs $250. I have replaced the brake pads and of course changed the oil regularly. All & All I am happy with my Alero and have a few more months until it is paid off. Hopefully nothing serious will go wrong. See above I am experiencing the same problems as most of the other Alero owners listed. 6 days after I bought the car, my battery was dead. Luckily the dealership replaced it for free. My low tire pressure sensors keep coming on along with the coolant light. I bought a tire gauge & keep it in my car - tires aren't low, but the sensor continues to come on. Same with coolant light - have checked coolant regularly, no problems! My first two fan speeds on heat/air do not work. My driver side window will not roll down. This has happened to a co worker's alero, along w/ my parents Intrigue. I just think its the poor craftmanship of Oldsmobile. I have also had my rotors replaced - 9 months after purchasing. When is Oldsmobile going to put out a recall on some of this? My parents refused to pay $300 to get their window fixed, so they have vice grips holding the window up. Its a lot of fun going through drive up windows & having to open the door b/c the window is broken. THe last complaint - my alero is the most uncomfortable car to ride in for long distances - in excess of 1 hour. My husband & I drove the car to Oklahoma from Illinois and we both felt like we'd been hit by a train when we arrived. We ached from the uncomfortable seets & had to make repeated rest stops so we could stretch due to the discomfort. |

Olds Alero
Let's see, where to start. Well my most recent problem has been the car filling with water everytime that it rains. Olds is not sure yet if that is covered under my warranty. The blinkers only work sometimes. The paint is gone off the stereo. There is a vibration in the dash which the mechanics keep telling me is not there. The tires make a wonderful noise around corners and is even worse if you try to brake while turning. I had my brakes replaced only to have the dealership not bolt them back on and they fell off in the middle of the highway during a snow storm. Need I say more. This car is nothing but a headache. I am sorry I bought it and I already know that it is worth about half of what I owe on it. |

everything First I would like to say that this car sucks. I have had numerous problems with this car. At 12,000 miles I had to have my rotors reshaped due to warping. At 20,000 they had to be replaced. My driver side window at one time completely quit working on me. The motor in it went out. 2 times I have had carbon build up in some part which caused my gas pedal to stick. So I would be driving down the road and I would all of a sudden start to speed up when my foot was not even on the accelerator. Safe huh? I have never heard of carbon build up in any car anyway. That costed me $75 one time and the awesome dealership in GA replaced the part for free one time. Oh, can't forget this one, my tie rods went bad and it sounded like my tires were going to fall off when I went over speed bumps. Now I have any appointment because my turn signals stopped working, my cigarette lighter will not stay depressed to heat up, and believe this or not, my clothes hanger in the back seat came out. I couldn't believe that so many things could go wrong in one car. One more thing, my cruise button would not stay depressed and I had to get that repaired. I am trying to dump this car now for someting that will last maybe a year or two. Other than than my car is great. |

Strength:
The car handles nice and I have the V6 so it has good pick up. It is a sporty yet family car. I have the 4door and there is plently of room for a family of 4.
Weakness:
The cup holders?? Who designed that. The back one keeps falling off and the front is in a weird place. The lights continue to go off on the dash so you never can tell when your really having a problem. I have enjoyed owning my Alero. I will say that I have had numerous problems. Many of the same problems that everyone seems to have. My power steering pump went out, my windows would get stuck and wouldn't go up or down, my car would take several times to start and they replaced the starter and ignition switch, several other electrical problems, the gas level would not change, the low tire presssure lights would go on and off all the time and the brakes seem to make noises when they are wet. The only thing that I can say I have no problem with is that I bought the extended warranty with a zero payment to take to the dealer. All of these repairs have been free to me. I paid $1000 for the extended warranty and have used way more then what I paid so far. I have found a great GM dealer to work on my car and that has been the saving grace with me. Weakness:
do i need to list them again? When I first purchased my 99 Alero I took my car back to the dealer several times due to breaks squeaking. They finally stated I rode my brakes to much and disk brakes over heat. I have had my rotors replaced twice. Finally I took my car to CarX for repairs and they were able to give me pads that do not squeak something new. I have had them for 2 months and so far no problems. Of course they had to replace my rotors at the same time. My first two settings of fan do not work, my rear defrost has stop working, my dome light rattles, trunk doesn't close well, up & down button on stereo have worn off, and my rear cupholder won't close. But, what's a consumer to do? Similar Products Used: Chevy Beretta Chevy Corsica |
