Strength:
Looks good, nice pick up, good value.
Weakness:
Rotors, service engine soon light, windshield problem First I managed to get a loaded Alero for about 3k under cost, which was one of the few high points. It looks great, but have had lots of problems. My windshield has been broken four times. GM insists its bad luck, but I been driving for fifteen years now, and up to the Alero, I never had a broken windshield. Now, four times in the past two years? My service engine soon light came on at 40K miles, which is utter nonsense. My driver and passenger windows are scratched up from a recurring problem. When I break, the car shimmies like hell, have had breaks done twice and two sets of tires. |

Makes a great paperweight!
Weakness:
Too many to list. GM should refund your money on this 4 wheel disaster. This is one of the worst cars I have ever owned, I will never buy another GM product. Brake rotors replaced at 18,000 miles. Park interlock mechanism failed. Blower motor settings 1-3 do not work. Drivers side electric window broke. Passenger side seat does not lock into position. Water leak in the trunk. |

Strength:
Attractive. No real major problems yet.
Weakness:
Slides very easy on slippery roads. Interior not made very well. I purchased my Alero new. The button popped out of the gear shift and had to get that replaced. The service engine light has came on twice now. I had to have the driver's and passenger window replaced because of scratches on the glass due to a defect. When I took the car in to have the gear shift fixed they told me there was a recall because of the trim on the windows and they paid for it. GM never notified me of this recall. I am getting rid of this car soon. Cheaply made! |

Engine is Strong and smooth Looks nice
Weakness:
GM Quality control not a shot in the head The first indication when buying this car was the 0% down for 48 months. I should have clued in that they are giving the cars away just to get rid of them. I have 84,000 kms on the car and have now traded it in for a Toyota Matrix. I took a loss on the vehicle but I am glad it is gone. Here were my problems and when they were discovered or fixed: - rotors warped and replaced @4500 km - driver window motor died @4600 km - seat height motor failed @7000 km - water leak in trunk @8000 km - CD player stopped working @11000 km - rotors warped and replaced @13000 km - battery died @17000 km - alternator died @20000 km - battery died @21000 km - transmission slipping @25000 km (they said there is nothing wrong) - fan settings 1 and 2 fail - noob on shifter popped off @34000 km I went for approx 25000 kms with no problems to my complete surprise. - Brakes replaced at 75000 km (I paid for them) - Brakes warped at 79000 km, they wanted me to pay for them. I think after screaming in their service area for nearly 10 mins, they got the idea that it was GM's engineering issue. They paid for it. - Air conditioning gone after 3 summers and about 20 times used I would not recommend another GM product to anyone, not even my worst enemy. Thank goodness I had the 5 year or 100,000 km waranty |

Break problem sucks!! It is just plain ridiculous to have so much trouble when you buy a brand new car> Break problems began at 12000mi. Been in shop 6 going on 7th time. also at this time there are noises coming from wheel area when making sharp turns. Strength:
When I first bought the car, it seemed very smooth and quiet. That changed though over the first two years. I like the styling of the car and I get good performance out of the engine. The engine in my GLS is a strong point. It is quiet and powerful...has good, smooth auto-transmission
Weakness:
The main weaknesses I would say would be the warping rotors which apparently cause you to have to get the brakes replaced fairly often. The noises my brakes make are embarrassing. This is my very first official consumer complaint on any product in my lifetime and I am 30 years old. I am a very reasonable person, and I am very realistic when it comes to expectations of how something should perform. However, my patience is beginning to run out somewhat on my 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. Within hours of purchasing my vehicle new in April, 2000 I noticed that the steering wheel shook when I was driving at high interstate speeds or when I was applying the brakes, especially if I had to stop abruptly. I took it right to the dealership to find out that one of the front rotors were warped! (On a brand new car...that should have been my tip-off about the car right there) But the dealership of course took care of it by replacing the warped rotor and they also put on new brake pads, and I was on my way. My next surprise came when it was raining one day and I went outside to find my trunk standing wide open. The inside of my trunk was soaked. Well, for some reason, it started opening almost every time it rained and it got so bad at one point that I couldn't get it to stay shut one day while it was raining. So that had to be repaired. Around this same time, too (this is all after I had the vehicle for about two years) I noticed a "clicking" noise when I applied my brakes. The noise can be heard from both inside and outside the car and is embarrassing since I have a relatively new car. People tend to look at me when I stop the car because it's making these weird noises. I have taken my car to the dealership about this particular issue about five times and that has yet to be fixed. Another issue is the low tire pressure light keeps coming on randomly, but I assume my tires aren't low because I have my vehicle serviced on a regular basis. They just reset that almost every time I get my oil changed. My car also began to leak when it rained around this time too. I first noticed it on the driver's side and then one morning after a heavy rain the night before, my passenger side floor was flooded (there was a couple of inches of standing water in there!) They have since fixed this. I have also experienced the grinding noise when braking like a lot of other people on here although that hasn't been too bad an issue for me. I have begun to hear a rubbing noise especially when I turn...apparently, this may be due to bad ball bearings. This has been worked on but was not completely eliminated. Now, this brings me to the latest issues. My car currently has just under 50,000 miles and last month I had to get my brake pads replaced again (after just having them replaced less than 12,000 miles previously), I got both front rotors replaced and also the front left hub replaced at the advice of the tech to get rid of the noises I was hearing...I did that, but the noises continue. My automatic door locks, and automatic windows stopped working due to water getting into the fuse block. I replaced the fuse block, and get this (I was told that I needed to replace my sunroof because that was how water was getting to the fuse block...due to the seal in the sunroof kit being bad. I also had to replace the window motor and regulators on both front windows to fix that problem. I THINK I have remembered most of the issues I have had with my new Alero. I must say it has been a disappointing experience. It seems that the car was VERY nice at first, but the parts go out very quickly and the car develops noises especially concerning the brakes that are difficult to get fixed. The bad part for me, too, is that a lot of my problems began occurring just after the warranty expired at 36,000 miles. I have spent over $3,000 in the past several months attempting to fix all the issues as they occur. If I have to spend much more, I'll just have to sell the car and get a new car in order to save money. It has not been a pleasant experience for my first brand new car. Similar Products Used: I had a Toyota Corolla and a Geo Metro before I bought this car. I think my Geo was even better than this car as far as reliability goes. |

2.2 ecotech engine @ 140Hp pretty pretty weak compared similiar models... Plastic noises inside Suspension needs to be lowered on 15" for better handling. The car was in "A1" condition until 20000km...First, major caliper problems, all types annoying noises due to cheap finish(plastic). Windshield motor got changed at 15000km...Top mount had to be greased at 22000km. Back speaker got replaced and the radio's time is never accurate. Overall, this car is like a pretty woman with an undiagnosed tumor... Thanks god I didn't get her fully loaded! Similar Products Used: Get the Altima! |
