Strength:

Silky smooth engine/ quick acceleration Bumpin' sound system European-like handling

Weakness:

Seats feel flat

The Alero I got was used, and from the service records that came with it, it has run flawlessly since the day the previous owner bought it. The odo now reads 100,000 miles and the engine is still quiet and silky smooth. I guess this one slipped under the radar!! Most people buy their cars with only performance prowess in mind, and don't bother to consider whether or not these cars are really built for that purpose. So they push them like they're on a Grand Circuit, instead of just simply driving it.

This car has been nothing but a burden to my family. My gas tank indicator stopped working unbeknowest to me therefore, causing me to run out of gas two hours away from home. This lead to a wealth of problems after I found out it was my gas tank I figured the proplem was solved a week later I was stranded in a national forrest consequently my gas tank had to be cleaned and my fuel filter had to be replaced. Now my blinkers and hazard lights randomly go out. THIS CAR IS A LEMON

Strength:

The outside looks great Sound System Powerfull engine The handling of turns and speed

Weakness:

I do notice some cheap things about the vehical. The malfunctions above should not be happening.

This is a great car but it has had it's problems. The looks on the outside and in are impressive and I get great comments on it from friends and people I don't know. I reconmend the GLS model. The power is great and the handling is unbelieveable. With the performance tires that come with it lets me take 90 degree turns at 40 mph. Not that I do it all the time but you have to test it once in a while. Passing comes easy and the ride is smooth for a sporty ride. The stereo is great. I get asked if I added a system to the vehical and they are surprised to hear that the sound system came with the vehical. Like I said, it is not the perfect car either. I am currently at about 40,000 miles and it was bought brand new. The Struts needed replaced a couple years ago but I was carrying a large load a long distance when the struts pretty much went. The passanger and drivers side Seat belts locked up, the blower switch broke, first two were off and the last two levels were high and I have seend it happen to many oldsmobiles. Transmission does not work correctly sometimes if I shift from reverse to drive to quickly. All the problems that needed to be fixed were under warrenty and yet to have to pay a cent for the repairs. It would be nice if I didn't have to fill up so frequently. If you are looking for a smaller car to get around town or travel in, this is a good opition. Great if you are young or older. Fits everyones needs. From the looks of peoples comments I might have gotten a better egg in the basket but with every car there are going to be problems all though the forgein cars seems to have much more quality to them with less troubles.

Strength:

Style, runs good. Mileage good. Fit on my car has been good.

Weakness:

Water leaks, will ruin electrical systms. Very, very common on Alero's, dealer even admits it. Also puttting it back into the garage to stave off dash peeling and new water leakage problems. This was my first new car (at age 43), it will be my last. Now I know why I never bought a new one before.

Great car 1st 2 years, 20,000 miles. Bad ignition switch at 20,000 miles. Water leakage, going in next week for the 3rd time in 2 mionths for windshield leaks. Leaking water over fuse block all the way to floor. I'm sure this is why so many Alero's are having electrical problems. WIndshield leaks are ruining electrical sysytem. Car never was outside first 2 years. After parking outside water problems started. I belive it has always leaked though. My wife said she thought it was leaking the day after we boyght it, but we blew it off. I don't have any of the other reported problems but I probably will as time goes on. My 46 year old '57 Chevy gives me less headaches :>

None what so ever.

Weakness:

The wrinkling of the dashcover, blinkers don't work half the time, neither does the hazard. Blown a head gasket and so it leaks antifreeze. Thats what happens when you make a crappy aluminum block. Windows also sometimes dont roll up.

I bought the car used with 40,000 miles and now I'm suprised that it has made it to 66,000. This car is the biggest piece of crap!!

Gets you from point A to point B.

Weakness:

Too many to name. I've had the car for almost 3 years and have had the driver's side window replaced, two new batteries, new alternator, new radiator, and replaced a transaxle. BTW, most of the work was done at an Olds dealership When it rains, my back seat floor boards are soaked. How the water gets in, I have no idea....the headliner is clean and the trunk is dry...my auto service center cannot find anything underneath to explain this problem. My Service Engine Soon Light comes on intermittently as does my PassLock System Light. The Passlock System which is an theft-deterrent feature is expensive to fix/replace and is not even covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

My pre-owned Alero was at approximately 17,000 miles when I bought it. Initially, I loved it and thought it was really a great value. Now, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND an extended warranty when buying this piece of #$@! Granted, I've put a lot of miles on this car in the past 3 years but I also keep it well maintained. I'm seriously considering returning the vehicle to the leinholder. I've got another two years on the note and I just don't think this crap is going to make it.

Model Reviewed: Alero GL coupe

Strength:

Price is just right. Excellent handling, pickup, and gas mileage.

Weakness:

Lack of headroom, narrow back and side mirrors.

Unfortunately, Oldsmobile wasn’t very successful in competing with the Honda Accord, Toyota Solara, or the Dodge Stratus - All vehicles in its price class. While not as popular, The Alero certainly stands up to its competition. Boasting a 150-horespower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, this car operates much like a V6. b>What I like about this vehicle: It has electric everything! This can be as much as a liability as an asset, but right now I am enjoying the positive aspects of this: Keyless entry, driver’s 8 point power seat, remote trunk release, electric mirrors, doors and windows. There is also a panic alarm on the keypad, to alert passersby if you are in trouble, when activated an alarm sounds, replete with flashing headlights and the whole shebang. The controls are very well placed and easy to read. There is also an auxiliary outlet in which you can plug in your cell phone or other electronic gadgets freeing up the cigarette lighter outlet. The trunk is roomy – larger than even the Honda Accord’s trunk, and the rear seats fold down if necessary to accommodate oversized items you may need to transport. The sound system, while far from a Bose, is actually much better than the usual factory installed system. The Alero comes standard with AM/FM radio and single compact disc player. It comes preset, with settings for jazz, classical, country, pop, and a manual setting which allows you to adjust the bass, treble, and mid-range sounds. There is even a setting for talk radio! The only problem I have is the CD player skips if you are driving over rough road. Either the CD is too sensitive, or the suspension could use a little beefing up. In my last vehicle, a Subaru Impreza, I could barely drive 20 miles before I started to get an ache in my lower back. The seats on the Alero are well padded to accommodate longer than average drives, and they match and complement the exterior color on all the color schemes I have seen. My car is gold, with interior cloth seats that are shades of tan and brown. Steering is so easy it’s almost frightening! - You merely have to move the wheel slightly for this car to respond. It handles unbelievably on sharp turns, much like a sports car. It took me a while to get used to the sensitivity of mechanism and to stop over steering. And the pick up on this car is remarkable. I found myself climb smoothly from 0 - 70 in a little over 30 seconds! The head/fog/parking lights There is an automatic setting, which allows the vehicles computer to adjust the lights according to the time of day, or lighting in the area in which you are driving – Just set it and forget it! What I don't like about the Alero: Headroom is virtually non-existent. I am 5’9”, which is hardly tall – Still my head sometimes hits the roof of the interior – I can’t imagine anyone taller than 6ft. tall being comfortable. There are 2-cup holders in the front – One between the driver and passenger, and one right next to the gearshift. The one near the gearshift cannot be used comfortably when the car is shifted into certain gears, as trying to get to the cup or container is impossible. The cup holders in the back (2) pull out from the centerpiece and are well placed. The narrowness of the side and back windows make it difficult to see well when backing up. It takes some getting used to, especially when it’s raining. I had to use my rearview and side mirrors constantly until I got the hang of it. Safety features: Both coupe and sedan come with four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction control, a four-wheel independent suspension, and hydraulic engine mounts. It comes with anti-lock brakes and electronic traction control. (Which is designed to reduce wheel spin under hard acceleration.) According to Oldsmobile, “The traction control system uses ABS wheel-speed sensors that detect when the front wheels are spinning; torque is then reduced by up shifting the transmission, retarding ignition timing and, if necessary, cutting fuel to the injectors.” After being activated, this system can be turned off by just a push of a button. The ETS button is located just below the gearshift. While the Alero only has dual front air bags, the vehicle is constructed with tubular door beams and strategically placed foam blocks to guard against side-impact injuries. Rear seats are equipped with child seat anchors. When I purchased this vehicle 3 months ago, it was in mint-condition, and only had 20,100 miles on the odometer. The dealer was so anxious to make a sale, he actually paid my first month of insurance, threw in a full tank of gas, and also an oil change. After all was said and done, I walked off the lot having paid only $11,000 for a used vehicle that sells on the average for 12,000.
