Strength:

Overall been reliable - nervous about post warranty which is around the corner...

Weakness:

CD player had to be replaced (was under warranty). Truck int. molding broke off. Brakes.

Brakes always were shaky. Had to replace today at 25000 miles. Seems early. Asked about a recall on the brakes. Told no.

Strength:

Nice stereo system. Has good power to get up and go. Stylish!

Weakness:

The cup holders in the front seat area are put in an odd place. Other than that, nothing!

I bought this car with 31,000 miles and have owned this car for a little over a yaer. I am the second owner. I had to replace the dash (under factory warranty) because it was bubbling. I also had the fuel sensor fixed (also under warranty). Since those two minor things, I have not a problem with the car. It runs excellent! I recommend this car to everyone who wants a sporty looking, reliable car with some power without having to pay for the "sports car" prices!

Weakness:

Bad quality, GM customer service is horrible.

I've had this car for 2 years (GL 2.4L) and is the worst purchase I've ever made. - Electrical failures (shutdown while driving). - Sway bar replaced (suspension). - Engine replaced at 10K nmiles - Coolant leak - Water leaks during car wash - Lights problems - Driver-side mirror shakes, etc, etc.. I filed my complain using the lemon law. GM didn't care until they receive notification of the case. GM refused to replace car or reimburse my money. At the end I got an extended warranty (5 year, expires 2006) because I threaten to reopen the case (GM had to pay for all case costs). Resale value is ridiculous so I'm hesitant to sell the car, I'll sell it just before the extended warranty expires. On each maintenance they have to be fixing defects, more fixes means GM has to pay for them and they lose money; that's what they deserve for their low quality products.

Strength:

Very sporty look- The body styling, wheels, spoiler. The engine seems to run good and provides sufficient power. I feel very comfortable in this car.

Weakness:

After 20000 miles I haven't had any real big problems with my Alero. The rear end blind spot problems seem to only exist with the 2dr coupe, and I have a 4 dr. For small problems, (most of which have already been mentioned in other reviews are the following) The cup holders are poorly placed, the trunk lid tends to close when you don't want it to, the tires make noise, and the brakes fail. However, for the last two problems- these can be corrected instantly by switching tire and rotor design, and you would likely never experience the proble again.

Overall, this is a really decent car. I used to stay away from the Olds line up, but some of these newer models are pretty good. I can't judge the 4 cylinder models, as I wouldn't have bought this car if they didn't offer the bigger engine. The V6 has power, but GM put a governor on the top end speed. None of my other cars ever had governors.

I like the dealer that I use. I have bought other cars (Chevys) from this dealer with no problems... the problem is the car

Weakness:

multiple mechanical problems, interior trim coming loose, everything starts going wrong shortly after the warranty runs out

My car currently has 38,500 miles and is 3 years old. Since my warranty went out at 36,000 miles I have had major electrical problems (lights working or not, alarm lights for no reason, car just won't start at times, etc). I also just had my 3rd set of brakes and rotors applied. This car has had multiple problems and it's driving me crazy!

Strength:

Stereo. Solid car with tons of features. Eye catching. Great value. Excellent warranty.

Weakness:

Road and engine noise is a little louder than expected. Front brake rotors warped before the car had 100 miles on it (warranty covered it). Starter has to crank a bit long sometimes. Rough idle. BIGGEST COMPLAINT: Gear ratios, especially the top gear. Have to force a downshift at 55mph just to get to 60mph in a reasonable time frame.

I am very happy with my Alero. I have the GL2 sedan with the sport suspension and every option but the 6way seat and leather. We had been considering the Honda Accord and the Alero for about 2 1/2 years before finally buying the Alero. With the rebate, college grad discount, GM Card earnings, and a MSRP discount a little over 7%, we just couldn't justify buying the Honda which would have cost us about $7900 more. Throw the 5 year warranty into the mix and I would have been a fool to buy the Honda. I really like the 16" wheels and Eagle RSA's that come stock. The 8 speaker stereo is the best feature.

BRAKING SYSTEM CUSTOMER SERVICE

I bought my Alero NEW in September of 2000. It was in the shop 7/18/01 for NEW ROTORS & BRAKES @ 16,664 miles. 9 months & 13,267 miles later the car was back at the dealership for the same braking problem, I was told this time that the brake system would outlast my car. I called the Gm Service center 1-800-442-6537 this time & wrote a letter to Gm in Detroit,MI. I received a free oil change for my "troubles". Then just yesterday, 4 months later from the 2nd brake repair and 7,225 miles later, I once again had my BRAKES & ROTORS REPLACED FOR A 3RD TIME!!! At this point I am SICK OF THIS BRAKE PROBLEM!!! I have ask for an extended warranty which was denied (funny, even GM doesn't beleive in standing behind their products). Now I want the car gone, GM CAN HAVE THIS CAR, HOW CAN I EVER FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR AGAIN??????????? I am definately concerned about putting an infant in my car, HOW WILL GM APOLOGIZE TO MY HUSBAND & FAMILY WHEN I AM FOUND DEAD BECAUSE OF A FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM THAT THEY COULD NOT FIX, EVEN ON THE 3RD TRY?????????????? I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND BUYING ANOTHER GM PRODUCT TO ANYONE! AND MY FATHER-IN-LAW WORKS FOR GM IN OHIO, AND TODAY HE IS AT THE MICHIGAN PLANT.

Weakness:

Brakes and rotors

I have had nothing but problems with this car since 25K miles. It now has 42K miles and I have had the brakes and rotors replaced 5 times. It is no longer under warranty and Oldsmobile customer service says that they do not believe that it is excessive. 5 times in 3 years and 42K miles is excessive in my book.

Strength:

Good power, sporty look

Weakness:

trunk liner loose fitting, many problems, doesn't seem to be put together very well. Constant brake, steering and water leak problems

Car has been in the shop many, many times. Mostly in the first year and a half. It only just now has 21000 miles on it in three years. I've gotten to where I am tired of trying to find alternate ways to work and back to the dealership when my car is in the shop so I've learned to just deal with a lot of stuff. It's been in for a major water leak that has happened since day 1. After 4 attempts, it still leaks very badly during rain. I've learned to take towels with me and stuff against the doors on days it looks like rain. The battery died and stranded me miles from civilization for absolutely no reason less than two yers after purchasing the car new. The right tail light has mysteriously burnt out twice within six months. The tuner knob broke, the driver's side window rattles endlessly...has been in three times for that, to no avail, the sunroof rattles unless the cover is open completely, the rubber molding around the driver's door was all rippled and looked awful. That had to be replaced three times, a new power steering component had to be replaced because of an awful grinding noise. Took care of the noise for about 6 months and now it's doing it again. At low speeds the car would squeal unless I lightly rode the brakes, at which time it would quit. Was in twice for that before it was fixed. Would squeak terribly whenever the car moved up and down, like over a bump or up an unlevel driveway. Was in three times before they decided it was a bad strut. The first two times it was in for that, "they couldn't hear the noise". However, that is really strange considering everyone on the streets could hear it as I passed by! It has had two recalls. I'm sure there were more things if I just sat and thought about it.

brakes and truck lining loose

I just got my second Alero today. I was rear-ended in my first Alero (the car protected me great during the wreck!) I had my first Alero for over 9 months - I had very little problems with it (just replaced brake pads once.) Overall- I loved my first Alero so much that I choose to get another one to replace it.
