Strength:

Remote truck release. I didn't buy this car. I lease so if it does not self destruct before my lease runs out I can turn in what is left of it and call a taxi!!!

Weakness:

Too many to list

Wish I had read these comments BEFORE I got into this mess. Had the car about 4 months before I had a bad water leak in the rear passenger side. Brought the car back 4 times before the got in right. The 4 time the dealership had broke the back seat trying to fix the leak. RECALLS!!!! About 3 recalls on this car. BRAKES!!!!!! Well lets talk about that- front and back brakes and rotors needed to be replaced at about 20,000 miles funny as I only brake about twice a day!!!! The dealership where the car was purchased refused to cover the brakes under warranty. I found a GM dealer that would cover them but by the time I got there the brakes were so bad that the guy in the shop said that I should not have left the dealership that I purchased the car from. (the brakes fell apart in the repairman's hands). The brakes although they are fixed sound terrible I have brought the car back because of the sounds it makes and they always say they are ok GM just used cheap parts. I would like to know with all the noise the brakes make how will I ever know when they are at the point of being dangerous!!!!! Windows- power windows broke and needed to be replaced on both doors. ( Thank god I have a two door!!!!). Security light- stays on once in a while. I have to restart it ot shut it off. CD player- cd go in but they won't come out!!!Inconvience- Huge!!!! With this as my first new car I have had to bum a ride more than with any of my old rats. Service- :( Two thumbs down for both GM custumer service and for NJ CURRI dealership. I have called with every complaint listed above and to no avail. My last survey( why they send them when they don't care is beyond me) was to say the least poor. Well to my surprise a rep. called me and asked what the problem was I told her I said that all this falls on deaf ears and she told me that a BIG SHOT would call me well that was in 2/02. Still waiting!!!!!! The dealership well lets face it once you pull out with your Oldsmobile Alero they pretty much say there goes another sucker and it's your problem.

The stereo and power windows and door locks.

Weakness:

I have put over $2,500 into this car in the last 6 months. I now have to keep the car since I have used so much cash a down payment on another car would hard to come up with.

After reading the other reviews I want to put my two cents in - which about what the car is worth. I bought the car used in April of 2001. In the last 6 months I have had to replace the condensor on the air conditioner, the fan switch on the airconditioner, the head gasket, and the starter. In addition, the button for the hazard lights has fallen into the dashboard and the cell phone receptacle has come loose from its connection. Also, on long drives the seating is quite uncomfortable and the cup holders and just about useless.

Strength:

Looks fabulous! Lots of features for the price, V6, Leather

Weakness:

Could use more power. I can't really say there is anything else that I don't like about this car.

GREAT CAR! This is the perfect combination of sportiness and classiness. Oldsmobile is the only division that GM can put up against the imports, so why are they dropping it? I drive 60 miles round trip each day just for work; 55000 miles on it now. I have only had the ever popular warped brake rotor problem and that's it! My theory is that it's hit or miss with GM as far as reliability and fit & finish. I have sold several of my friends on Aleros. My sister even bought an Alero GLS after her Nissan Altima was wrecked. No one I know has had the problems that I've read on here. I really like all the features this car has: Automatic locks, Illuminated Entry/Exit, Standard ABS & Traction Control, Tire pressure monitor, Oil life Monitor.... Is that stuff standard on Altima, Camry, Accord??? I would like to see more horsepower, maybe heated seats, auto climate control... Great car

Strength:

Love the look. Very sporty for a four door mom-mobile.

Weakness:

Breaks, front end noise when you slow to stop, and that faulty intake manifold gasket that should never have to be replaced. Coolant began leaking and had to be topped off about every 4-5 weeks. I should have known this would lead to a more serious problem - like now. $1200 in repairs.

I still love my car. I just wish GM would have made it to last. Using cheap rotors and bad intake manifold gaskets have been the source of some pretty expensive work. I have had to replace the rotors, front wheel bearings, and now the intake manifold gasket and head gasket. I am only at 70,000 miles. The trim around the rear passenger doors lifted shortly after purchase. This was my first loaded car and I had intended to keep it

Good lookin car,as well great car to modify into a sleeper!

Weakness:

Hard starter, and in my opinion below average brakes,ok handling

Since day one i have been upgrading my alero. I replace the oem rotors and brake pads with ebc green stuff brake pads and new slotted rotors. A major improvment! And now i am replacing the stock suspension with eibach springs, kyb shocks and custom built strut tower bars front and rear. And in the future replacing the stock air box with a true cool air induction system as well custom borla exhaust system. This should overcome some of the weaknesses olds alero.

Model Reviewed: Alero GL2 sedan V6

Strength:

- Very sporty looking (especially w/alum. wheels, rear spoiler, pwr sunroof). Much more attractive car than its Pontiac Grand Am cousin. (my opinion) - V6 has adequate power (although a couple more horses wouldn't hurt...say 30 or so). - Gas mileage is very good for a V6....about 300 miles per full tank, regardless of driving style. - Factory GM stereo sounds awesome! - Fog lights - Interior comfort and roominess - Trunk space - attractive gauge cluster and interior ergonomics

Weakness:

- Definitely not as solid over bumps than a Honda or Toyota - Road noise at higher speeds - Brakes perform okay, but are noisey....especially when wet. - Cup holder in front of the shifter is in a bad spot - Dual-exhaust would be sweet.

2001 Alero GL2 4dr V6 (4spd auto): I like this car alot. I just hit 30K miles and the only problem I've had with the car is warped rotors. (That seems to be the popular complaint from what I've seen here). Plus, they seem to make a grinding noise when stopping, most noticeably in the rain. I've also noticed the car has quite a bit of road noise at higher speeds. Maybe that's why the stereo has that stupid SCV (speed compensated volume) option, (when SCV is ON..the faster you drive, the louder the radio gets), to make you sort of forget about the road noise. I also (like a few other reviews here) have noticed the "reluctance-to-start right away" issue. All in all, I think this car is a great improvement over some of the early/mid '90s comparable GM cars (Corsica, Achieva, etc.) Very sporty looking, and the 170-hp V6 is great with lots of smooth power! My wife also owns an Alero (a 2000 GL2 V6), and her car has had the same problem with the rotors, plus STILL has a wierd abnormal spinning noise from the vents when the A/C is cranked. Hmmm? On both cars, the brakes were still covered under warranty, and were fixed correctly the first time. ....I hope I haven't jinxed us by writing a semi-positive review about both our Aleros.

Looks good, comfortable

Weakness:

must have been some defective spray adhesive when my car was manufactured putting on winyl on the dashboard I have called Oldsmobile concerning this and they told me since I was 2nd owner that they could do nothing about it.

I believe that the are some manufacture defects in my car that Oldsmobile are not honoring, like all the vinyl on my dashboared, doors, airbags, are coming off, my battery light stays on constantley, my cruise light flashing off and on even though I have taken it to dealership and they say nothing is wrong

transmission problem

Makes a noise when you turn, I've taken it in twice for this problem supposedly a "dry seal". They fixed it the second time and it's been fine since. There is a problem with the transmission shifting, I've taken it in 3 times so far, 2 days each time and they can't figure out what the problem is. They have now ordered a couple replacement parts so I'll have to take it in again when they arrive.
