Model Reviewed: Oldsmobile Alero

Strength:

Power; agressively solid looks; all the creature comforts; solid driving experience

Weakness:

head room; gas mileage if you compare it to a 4 cylinder.

Well worth the money. My purchase included all of the available options except for sunroof and leather. It looks great and is very comfortable to drive.

Model Reviewed: Alero GLS 4 door

Strength:

This car has everything but the gold lettering on it. It looks nice and handles good and the radio is really high tech.

Weakness:

It doesn''t seem to have very good acceleration and the transmission seems to shift hard from 1st gear to second.

I really like the looks of my car but, when it had 150 miles on it one of the valve springs in the engine broke. I kind of thought at the time that the dealer should maybe replace the rest of them but they didn''t. So last week the dealer called me and said that there has been a recall on my car and that they were going to replace all of the valve springs. Has anyone else had this problem?

Strength:

-Sporty, rakish styling
-Simple, but effective interior
-Grippy, responsive handling
-Fast acceleration
-decent value for the money
-$-wheel disc brakes, ABS, Traction control are standard on all Aleros

Weakness:

-Typical GM quality (or lack thereof)
-Mediocre fuel mileage
-Olds will go the way of the dodo bird in a couple of years

Styling was the main selling point for me. I own a GL3 coupe with the V-6 and I think it is a clean, handsome and sporty-looking car. Despite the swoopy styling, the interior room, including the back seat is more than adequate. The interior is simple, but effective, with large, easy-to-read gauges and well-placed buttons and dials for the audio and climate control systems. There are lots of cubbies and storage space. The V-6 is an old, low-tech pushrod design, but is reliable and offers plenty of power to propel the relatively light car. The automatic tranny is smooth but not exactly sporty, and the ride is smooth and quiet without becoming too floaty. A good compromise between luxury and sport. With the FE3 sport pacakge, handling is excellent, and the steering feel is not bad at all. The 4-wheel ABS disc brakes have a nice firm feel, and there is very little fade. Most of my complaints are with the build quality. Some body panels don't line up, and some interior bits such as the coin tray and the headlight stalk (High beams) don't function properly. The only major problem occurred at 10,500 miles when I was unable to turn the key in the ignition due to a defective ignition cylinder. After a horrible experience with roadside assistance, the problem was promptly fixed under warranty. Overall, this car is fun to drive, performs well, and is a good value for the money.

The Grand Am is the Alero's mechanical twin, but, for some reason, Pontiac's definition of "Sporty styling" means slapping crappy-looking plastic trim all over the bottom of the car. The Alero, on the other hand, looks much cleaner and more cohesive.

I love the easy handeling, the looks, the interior, and the overall performance of it.

Weakness:

Well, I havent had any problems with it yet, and it already has 38,000 miles!!

I have had a great time with the sporty looks of the car and how it handles!! I would reccomend buying one if you are into sport, and confortness!

Strength:

V6 power, solid handling, thumping stero (especially with the rap tunes!!) sexy styling

Weakness:

gas milage could be better, possible torque mismanagement with the transmission-too much engine for the tranny?

First time I test drove one, I knew this car wasn't a typical American made piece of junk. I've owned my now for 8 months and I haven't had any problems with it. The Alero gives me a very secure feeling on the road. I like the tight handling and the power of the V6. The moonroof is also adds to the sex appeal of this car. I have owned VW's in the past, so I was reluctant to look at US cars. Even though it is the same car as the Grand Am, the Alero isn't as junky looking and impresses me much more. Very satisfied.

Driven the Grand Am (don't ask me why), Alero is much nicer inside and not as fake looking

Model Reviewed: Olds Alero GLS

Strength:

- Great Exterior Styling (Someone thought it was a4 door mustang)
- Great 0/35-70 acceleration
- *VERY* fun to drive.
- The sound system is great!

Weakness:

- Whoever thought up the drink holders needs to be shot. If I have a Biggie coke in the front drink holder, the car can't be shifted into park.
- Torque steer - the first time I went to pass someone, I stomped the gas and almost went offthe left side of the road. It's a bit squirrely until you get used to the way it steers.
- The ability to pull in radio stations is pretty limited, but I listen to CD's so that real doesn't affect me.

Paid 21,480 for the GLS with optional wing and sound system. Got great financing, love it.. Be casreful the first fewmonths of driving it because it has an extremely quick steering system with a lot of torque steer. The door ding gnomes havent visited me yet, and I have yet to rxperience any significant problems. Overall it's a very fun car to drive with the exception of the f*#()king cup holders. That and there's no rear ashtray if you haul around smokers like I do.

aggressive alero

Strength:

Power. Aggresive styling and road behaviour ( especially for a 4 door ). Fit and Finish.

Weakness:

If you're over 5'11'' you might have some issues with headroom and there's only one cup holder in the front.

It looks great. It handles very well. It's a great deal for the money. The fit and finish is excellent. I shopped the car market for approx. 6 months and couldn't find a better deal. I've always owned imports till now.

I challenge anybody to find a car with as many options as the Alero for the same price. If you find one, put them both through the gears and see which one comes out on top.

Car is quick and sporty. I have the sun and sound system package and the stereo system is great.

Weakness:

Having problems with the fuel guage reading. Having it replaced at 6,000 miles. When breaking the car sometimes stutters and dosen't stop good. It does seem to run hot.

Car has been fun to drive. It is quick and handles great. I am getting great gas mileage. I drive mostly highway but also stop and go traffic. I don't drive the car hard and find I can go over 300 miles on one tank of gas.

Strength:

Very sexy styling, dash is one of the nicest ive seen. good stereo for a stock one. Rear wing adds a lot. 16 inch alloys look amazing in silver. Navy Blue is a must for the exterior. Resale will go up in a couple years when olds goes out of business (why didnt buick get the axe?). Nice exhaust tone, good kick. nice handling. gone over 17000 Km and no major problems. only drivers side mirror shakes all the time, although not horribly. could be from the wind. comfortable seats, good color matching in interior. V6 engine is a must. On our old 97 malibu the water pump broke after 70k KM. same i4 as alero gx.

Weakness:

resale right now.

Buy this car its gonna be a classic. i still wonder why Buick didnt get killed. Oldsmobile was just getting good again. oh well. nice ride. good for anyone who wants to be different than all of those accords and camrys. Despite power disadvantage towards honda, its still cheaper and just about as fast. The interior is plush and looks like it was thoughtfully planned out. still doesnt compare to volkswagen interiors but parts are cheaper. great car. lots of attention comes with it, especially in dark blue with alloys. Buy it and you shouldnt be disappointed.
