Strength:

Great Handling, Beautiful Car, Beautiful Interior, Damn good premium sound (Monsoon Sound System), Solidly Built, Pretty good power and quite quick, great stearing, fun factor very high.

Weakness:

Have to put in reverse to take the key out (Which can be bypassed),Unrefined engine, Pain in the Ass to change the rear speakers!

I am one of the first people in my area to get a stick for the ALero, it is so much fun to drive, because of the GL2 performance package it just simply wants you to drive like a boy racer, sure the car could sit a little lower but for the normal person it is perfectly suitable. The stick is a slick 5 spd from Getrag, same as the one in the Z24 and Sunfires. Once you drive the stick version of this car you'll never want to drive a automatic Alero again. Sure it is just a 4 cyclinder (which is not that smooth) but it gets you going pretty damn good. Drive one and you'll understand completely. Couldn't be any happier, especially considering the deal the dealers are giving, its a steal!

Similar Products Used:

Like the Grand Am but without all of the cheesy plastic interior which creates a lot of squeaks down the road, better deal than the imports (Accords, and Camrys)

Strength:

great looking 4 door (sporty), 150 Watt stereo cd/cass, nice interior, great speed for 4 cyl., good acceleration, alot of neat extras, fairly roomy.......Good car

Weakness:

terrible customer support from manufacturer, front speakers blew and dealership says (speakers weren't meant to be played that loud" (well why in the hell does it have 150w stereo then was my question to them, alot of little things started messing up (vents stayed broke even without use, cruise control and instumentation lights started messing up.)

I only got rid of my car because I have a long commute to work and school. I loved my alero but was putting too many miles on the vehicle. I got it Nov 1999 with 24k miles turned it in march 2001 with 61k. At that rate it would have been ragged by the time I had it paid off. I don't like the 36k mile warranty. Every vehicle needs at least 100k mile warranty. GM is however better than Ford and would never own another Ford. I don't think I will ever own another american made product because as a customer, I feel that the manufacturer should have enough assurance in their product to warranty it for 100k miles. After about 36k miles all the little things start tearing up (vents and stuff). I like the alero. I hope I like my blazer as much as I liked it and I might buy american again.

All the wonderful features it comes with, and not paying extra. Very good pick power for 3.4L v6 with only 170hsp. Also the great sound it came with and cd player. Paid a good price and with 27290 miles on it.

Weakness:

not enough horse power for the 3.4L v6. Can have better deep exhuast sound.

I love this car very much. Was able to increase the power from 170hp to 245hp. It was simple and parts were not hard to find at all. I will keep my car for a very long time. I just wish buick got the axe instead.

Strength:

Good looks, good sound system, nice interior.

Weakness:

1. Leaking passenger side door.
2. Lots of rattles
3. Bad visibility.

I like my alero except for the fact that the passenger side door leaks. I can take the car through a car wash and it doesn't leak, but when it's sitting outside in the rain, it leaks badly. The leak comes in under the door but no one can find it.
Another thing is the car rattles terribly and there are bad blind spots especially on the left side. Also the gas mileage isn't what I expected it to be.

Strength:

Very Powerful Engine.. Seems to have a good punch at any speed, but I haven't tried it from the line. Good sounding Audio System, though a few more options besides Bass,Mid, and Treble would have been nice. Great looking.

Weakness:

I've owned the car for three weeks and it's taking on Water on the drivers side. Seems like it underneath the seat. I'm seeing the service department this week, and they seemed to "know" it was a 2 door before I told them. I'm hoping this can be fixed first time around, and not be a continuing problem.
I punched it one day from about 5 mph, and when the car shifted from first to second, the tires "skipped". I've noticed a bit more body roll than I expected as well when cornering.

Since I've only had it three weeks, and already have a water leak under the driver's seat, I'm a little dissapointed. The car performs well, the MPG is lower than expected on Highway, and cornering is a little sloppy. Otherwise, the car seems to be very good.

Similar Products Used:

of all the cars I test drove, the only one that had this similar amount of power was the Dodge Stratus. All other cars had chincy 4cyl engines that didn't perform.

Strength:

The 3.4L V-6 is smooth and powerful; makes passing on 2 lane roads a snap. Auto transmission performs well and shifts smoothly; nicest auto I've driven. Overall handling is excellent; Goodyear RS-A's grip tightly, brakes are strong, suspension well tuned. ABS and traction control are excellent for snow and rain. Fit and finish of entire car is superb. High beams light up a country roads like daytime.

Weakness:

Gas mileage is lower than the expected 32mpg for highway. 26mpg is what I'm getting for 100% highway driving at 70-75mph. 24mpg city.

This car is comfortable and is fun to drive. Excellent power and handling in a roomy 4-door vehicle. I paid just under 20k for the GL-2 with V-6 and 16-inch alloy wheels. That includes tax, title and everything else. For a car with a V-6 engine, 4 wheel disc anti-lock brakes, traction control, 16" alloy wheels with wide low-profile tires, premium sound with CD, power windows and locks, keyless entry, cruise, tilt wheel, you can't beat the value.

Camry - Alero has better performance/handling, better value (more standard equipment)

Strength:

This car was built for me. It's sporty and classy. Great power and great dollars to features ratio. Love the sound system; it's better than the chintzy sound in my friend's 2001 Acura CL. Standard traction control is great, it's not even available on Altima or Accord is it?

Weakness:

The engine can be a little loud; it's louder than my sister's 97 Altima with a 4 cylinder. Wish I could get heated seats and steering wheel touch controls for the stereo like on all the other Oldsmobiles. Where's the 32 Hwy mpg? I get 21 mpg on the hwy.

I love this car. Drive 70 miles round trip to work each day. I have had it for a year now and have 26000 miles. I had that prob with the brake rotors at 8000 miles that was corrected right away. It turns heads and I always get complements on it. It's oh so comfortable and it's a good deal whether you pay MSRP or invoice (like I did). I recommend it to everyone. My buddy got a 2001 GL sedan a few months ago. He's getting bad fuel economy though. Other than that, he's happy. It appeals to everyone of all ages shapes and sizes. My parents are getting one soon too as well as my cousin. People are reluctant to buy Olds since the announcement of their phase-out. Now every new Olds comes with the 5 yr 60k mi warranty. If your Olds needs warranty work and there's no more Olds, you can take it to any GM dealer (Pontiac, Chevy, Buick...). This warranty is backed by GM so don't worry!

Similar Products Used:

Pontiac Grand Am: It's the G.A.'s classier and more mature cousin.
Nissan Altima: with no V6 available on the Altima, the Alero wins at the track. Chevy Malibu: Same platform, but totally different cars. The brand differentiation is good here. I was considering Malibu in 98, but when I saw the 99 Alero, I said screw the 'bu.

Has still got enough getup and go to out run a 2001 Dodge Durango 5.6L. Goes great in bad weather, comfortable, well arranged and roomy even in the backseat (unusual for a 2dr)

Weakness:

Doesn't hold enough gas!

I'd definitely recommend this car to anyone who asked me. I would suggest leather interior over cloth, it's a great deal more comfortable (I drove a loaner for a week). The brakes gave me fits over the first 15 & 30K but it was a rotor defect. After 48K, I still love it as much as I did when I first saw it and more. I suppose I could have spent less, but why?

V6 still great, gas mileage still great. Have added a K&N air filter and dynomax exhaust.also eibach springs and 225/45 zr 17 csa 6 spoke wheels. for a 4door family car there sure is a good after market for it. reaallly strong performance from it now - al it needed was to breathe better. kills all hondas, acura's (except type r) and Monte Carlo z34 or ss eat dust.

Weakness:

nothing new to report. runs really well. gas mileage with a lead foot at 25 mpg or better is outstanding.car looks great.
Blind spots over shoulder and in front a pillar still a pain in the ass sometimes, but that's all.

Very good value when i got it. Can't believe that GM would kill olds when they are just getting some good product together. This was my 1st olds and i never would have considered one before this Alero. I would not hesitate to recommend this car to anyone - the twin brother grand am looks like a typical piece of pontiac plastic and can't touch the alero for style.Goes good, rides good, looks good, what more can i say?!?!?

1995 Taurus SHO 5 spd - very quick, but had to trash it to get anywhere quick. The alero is just as quick now and it's an automatic! The sho was not developed by ford very well. Bullet proof engine from Yamaha, but the rest of the car was crap.
1990 Bonneville SSE - nice big car, but slow.
!989 Dodge Spirit Turbo - quick, but still a a Dodge.
1986 Chrysler Lebaron GTS Turbo - slower than it looked.
1980 Chev Monte Carlo 350 - my last rear drive car. sucked gas like it was going out of style!!!
