Strength:

A very strong engine!

Weakness:

I was in an accident with my Alero, $10,000 of damage was done to the front end. The air bags did not deploy, Oldsmobile says basically you have to be in "a perfect crash" for them to deploy. This was not shared with me at the dealership. Customer service of Oldsmobile SUCKS!!! The brake rotors are constantly out of round making braking horrible. This problem has been to the shop several times, still no better!!! DO NOT BY AN OLDSMOBILE PRODUCT!!!!

$20,000 DO NOT BUY AN OLDSMOBILE PRODUCT! DO NOT BUY AN OLDSMOBILE PRODUCT! DO NOT BUY AN OLDSMOBILE PRODUCT!!!

Strength:

Great looking car, the spoiler adds alot. Price is very good for such a loaded car. Very fun to drive, It has a great engine and runs beautifully

Weakness:

There is a blind spot over the left driver's side, but you'd expect that out of a coupe. Gas milage is average, think that's it...Black paint gets dirty easily, but that's expected.

I only paid 19,500 w/ 3.9%financing for the top of the line GLS model with only 9 miles on it. It has everything, leather, CD, spoiler---I love this car. I researched very heavily before making a decision, I was hesitant to buy an American car after having several bad experiences with Fords. I have not had a single problem with my Alero and have driven it over 7000 miles already, and thats in four months. Everyone I talk to thinks I paid alot more, and says its a very sweet car. If you don't push the engine too hard and use the cruise control you'll get decent gas milage, especially for a 6 cylinder automatic engine. I say BUY this car, you'll be very pleased with its performance. I had considered Honda's and the Eclispe, but the pricing, performance, and the style of the Alero won me over, best 20 grand ever spent.

Strength:

Handles excellent, sporty exterior, plenty of features, interior looks nice, decent pick up, price, cd player AND tape deck, 4 door with plenty of back seat room, 4 cylinder feels more like a 6.

Weakness:

Gas mileage is not so great for the 4 cylinder, seems to burn oil, acceleration response is not great,

When I went looking for a car back in October of 99, I had never heard of the Alero. The salesperson asked if I would like to drive one and I fell in love with it. The response is excellent, as good or better than a Mustang GT in my opinion. This makes the car fun to drive. It has a nice smooth ride and the interior is sharp with the CD player and 2 tone colors.
The only problem I have had so far is that on my 3rd oil change (about 900 miles) the car burned down one quart. I am no mechanic but it seems odd. Then when I drove about 6 hours across New York State, I checked the oil after the trip and saw that it again burned almost a quart. Maybe someone can tell me more of why this is. It is a 4 cylinder and only takes 3.5 quarts.
Overall, I am very happy with the car. It probably won't turn heads like my Mustang, but it makes my day a little easier by giving me a nice ride to work.
I should probably also add that it seems to run well in Buffalo snow which the Mustang could not do.
If your looking for a car under $16000 check it out.

Strength:

great looks for a sedan. I receive lots of compliments.
The 4 cyl is well-suited to the car.
Good fuel economy for a 2.4L 4cyl, in my opinion.
I calculated mileage from 1000 miles to 3500 miles.
I averaged 29.1 MPG (U.S. Gallon) (35MPG in Canada for Imperial Gallons)
Very long service life for spark plugs, coolant, and auto trans fluid (100,000 - 150,00 miles)

Weakness:

-driver's side mirror won't stay in place, it moves out of position when shutting the door or hitting a bump on hwy.
-bass is too boomy with AM/FM stereo cassette, and 4 speakers.
-driver seat is a little uncomforable for long distance drives (I'm 6'2")note that this is the GX (base) model.
-too much body roll in corners.
-whistle noise from engine when accelerating or decelerating.

I would recommend it.

Strength:

Quick (V6). Solid Pretty in a classy / agressive way. Classy, functional interior. Loaded. Can turn nice, tight and flat. Sensitive steering. Cheap. That incredible trunk release button.

Weakness:

torque steer, blindspots, cup holder placement. paint chips, uncomfortable-ish seats, brake rotors warp easily. Loud fuel pump and rad fan (or is it just a very quite engine?)

I am part of the 20-something young professional demographic, and GM's marketing campaign targeted me with the Alero. I started by looking at hondas and nissans, but the Alero made the accords and altimas look stingy. If you want factory accessories, get the 16" wheels, the spoiler, and the CD, or you will envy those who did. I got the 4 door, since girls don't count doors, and insurance companies do.

Someone else mentioned the V6 putting out an intermitent vibration at idle speeds. Me too. We'll see what my GM dealer has to say. This happened once: bug splats on paint, gets washed off, and takes the paint with it. (I do not live in a strange country with acid-for-blood-bugs) Seats and map pocket on door work together to make long trips a little painful. Torque steer is managable. Cupholders and blindspots: same as everyone else. Contrary to anything else that has been said about the climate controls and stereo: the interface is clean and pretty, and they both do their jobs very well. If you consider this a compliment: my performance-oriented european coworkers here on expat like the Aleros more than any other American rental car: they've all switched to driving one (except one guy who is minivan obsessed).

It would seem that everyone likes the car, but noone seems to really notice the Alero as a young-guy car until a friend (like you) gets one. Then they begin to like it, alot. One more 20-something driving an Integra? No.

Strength:

It's comfortable, and very sporty. I fell in LOVE with this car just by seeing it on the floor show room, so I bought. It is my first car I'm buying. A total of around 24K. I got the Extra Stereo System in it. The bass sounds tremendous for factory quality.

Weakness:

I've the CD stereo player replaced twice. The first time for some melted pieces in the unit from the sun, and the 2nd for skipping and jumping. 2 days after I got it back from skipping and jumping, it happended again. Factory stereo units are crap, just plain crap. Buy a Pioneer Unit. They are the best. I also recently found out some more crap: GET THIS: For about a month now, I've been experiencing some weird noises from the front floor board when I either start the car, or just turn it enough to roll up the windows. There is this LOUD VIBRATING BELCHING NOISE that goes for 3-5 seconds and then stops. I took it back to the Oldsmobile dealer 1 time and they thought they fixed it...NOPE! The 2nd time I took it back they found out that: "GENERAL MOTORS BOUGHT SOME CHEAP FUEL PUMPS AND PLACED THEM IN THE ALEROS!" They told the Oldsmobile dealers that they won't replace them under the warranty if the Fuel pump was getting enough pressure to pump the fuel and run the car. WHAT? HELLO? Isn't the car supposed to be fairly quiet without making noises? Noises mean that there is something wrong with it. Right? Well, something is deffinately wrong with my car and it needs to be fixed, replaced and give me my money back in full. It's a FACTORY MISTAKE, it's not my mistake they used cheap parts. It should be covered under warranty.

24K! Yes I reccomend it as long as General Motors keeps the warranty's straight. They are giving me the run around so bad. I want my fuel pump replaced along with yet another brand new CD player, or I just want my money back for what I paid so I can go by something else. This is rediculous. I pay a years worth of salary over however many years and they don't even give you a high quality fuel pump. The sound drives me nuts. Even though it's only 3-5 seconds, everytime you start the car it ends up getting very annoying. I recommend NOBODY buy this car unless you totally agree with warranty. General Motors needs to stop giving people the run around. I mean, I've kept up with my oil changes on time, I've never mixed gradeds of gases, heck I haven't even got gas from 2 diff. gas company's yet. I keep my car clean. It's washed twice a week, or atleast once and cleaned inside 2-3 times a month. And they can't even replace the fuel pump for us? Come On? IF ANYBODY ELSE READS THIS AND HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM PLEASE PUT YOUR REVIEW HERE AS WELL. I NEED SOME HELP IN DEFEATING GENERAL MOTORS ON THIS CASE.

Strength:

I have the 4 cylinder, and it has great pickup. Hugs the corners, excellent wrap around dash, confortable, excellent brakes, and a gorgeous car.

Weakness:

All should come with fog lights, A/C needs to be colder, wheels should be 16"

I paid around 24K for mine new. I love the car. Everytime I pass someone on the street, they have to stare at it. Its a good highway car, with great acceleration for a 4 cylinder. Actually, its comparable to my old 2.8L Beretta. The dash is very nice. Nice wrap around effect, two tone, and controls are easy to reach. The Premium CD player and speaker package sounds very good for a factory kit. The tires are excellent and after a year there is no wear at all, and I'm not the average driver.
It corners like its on rails, and with the ETS, you feel it grabbing the road all the time. I've never even slightly spun the tires, even in rain or somewhat slippery conditions, and its not from lack of power!
In all, an excellent car for a guy or gal in there twenties or early thirties. I am in my mid 20s and am leasing it for 3 years, and I may very well buy it before long.

Steering, braking, looks

Weakness:

controls, uncomfortable, un-reliable?, ride not as firm as i like

Im leasing it for exactly $300 a month with $0 down. I really like the steering and the looks of the car. The brake pedal is firm and acceleration is very brisk. But thats where the good ends. The seats and ride are very uncomfortable. The rotary knobs for A/C and heat etc. are very flimsy and its very difficult to tell what position the knob is actually in. Also, after i had this car for about 11 months the chime and and battery light kept flashing. I brought it to the shop, and they couldnt find anything wrong with it. Anyway this is a descent car if looks are more important than comfort to you.

very sporty, lots of power for a 4 cyl. enjine

Weakness:

lousy gas mileage, terrible blind spots and rear visibility
the rear seat is small, not roomy. I suggest it for young to middle aged persons without family.

I paid 14,500 for a program vehicle with 23,000 miles. It has been put in the shop twice for window noise, leaking air. It is too soon to say but I love the ride and look of the car. I think it is a nice car for the price.
