Clutch for manual transmision

I am thankfu that I am only leasing my alero, after reading all the other reviews on my car. I have about 69,000 km on my car at present, and havn't had any problems with the brakes as of yet. I find my car has ample power, I like the stereo, and considdering i drive about 1 and a half hours a day on the highway it handles very well. my tires are just about ready to be replaced, but they have worn very even and my local tire shop said with my mileage they werent suprised at the condition of my tires, in fact they were impressed they have lasted as well as they have. my biggest complaint would be that in cold weather, when the temperature gets down to -25C or below, that the clutch seems to almost disappear, and i need to pump it to keep any presure in it. I was told by my dealership after they took it in the shop that all I could do was wait for warmer weather, witch is impossible since we have about 4 months of cold weather here every year, and as I said before i drive every day to and from work about 1/2 hour each way on the highway. Other than that I have no other complaints about my car, but I would never recomend it to anyone in my area, at least not if they want to have a manual transmision.

Brakes worn out before 40,000km. Rotors defective. Goodyear tires have design flaw.

At 40,000 km(25000mi) I heard scraping from front brakes. Radio always on, so didn't hear beginning of scraping. I examined brakes and one pad 100% gone down to metal.Other half 1/4 inch left. Went to GM dealer, was told that my warranty had expired by ONE WEEK! As you have not had your car serviced here, the DSM will not accept your claim. If you want us to examine your brakes I will need a chargable service order. I said brake shops will examine at No Charge and was advised by a salesman to go to a brake shop that many of them personally use. Brake shop shwed me worn out pads(one from each front wheel) They said the calipers were defective, holding one side of pad always against rotor. $500 and I was on the road again with pad guarantee. I could hear scraping and returned to brake shop, they replaced the Raybestos pads for new ones(all No charge) and I am back on the road again. I again hear intermittant rotational scraping sounds and return again. They install GM pads (I pay diff. from150-90=60$ No charge for labour)I drive car and again hear scraping. I go to GM dealer and Shop Manager drives car 50 feet and says "Yup, just like many others...it's your G grooves on the Goodyear tires wearing on the soft aluminum wheel. I get many of these same situations! Two choices, replace tires or drive with noises. He says he has a GM bulletin describing this problem. Sorry, your warranty is up so we cannot help you.The problem is not yet a safety issue so no recall. A GM service clerk tells me to buy tires at Costco not at GM dealer! I write several lettrs to GM Canada, they tell me, "we were not permitted to examine your car, so we cannot believe you..(or words to that effect) I appeal to a supervisor and she repeats the GM line of refusal. My wife and I have driven GM cars for 40 years, bought our two cars always from same salesman and GM dealer.(Wife's car 1999 Intrigue, brakes replaced at 85000 km) With a trembling voice I finally said, that I would never purchase another GM product. Our next cars would be one of the top 5 rated cars...all of which are Japanese! We are seniors and do not race, screech to stops, nor stress the automobiles. We live in a rural setting and do not have the big city auto stress. I am now in the market for a car, as having read 50 reviews of the 2001 Alero I will dispose of it before I encounter more eventual problems. I write several letters to GM,

Fast, Nice looking, sounds great

Weakness:

Read above

Well I've had my Alero for a little more than a year now and am dissapointed with it. I'm a 21 year male who is into this sports car stuff, when I saw it at the dealership it had 442 on the back end of both sides and a window banner which really made me look twice, so I test drove it. I liked it so I got it since my car was about to die anyhow. So I had the decals changed on it and done a lot of mods to it. Now runs with about 250 horses for a 2.4L thats pretty good I'd say. Passes great looks great, however on long drives my back screams for something else to sit on even sometimes it would be better to just sit on a milk crate. When I got it, it had about 50,000 miles on it, now it has about 70,000 miles and I've had to change both window regulators twice, both window switches. Since I do everything my self since I don't have a lot of money to plan around with, my power outlets don't work, my trunk release button, and cruise control don't work any more eaither. My speakers blew out the same day as I got the car, was not listening to music loud I can't stand music very loud anyhow. Changed both front speakers and still both of them blew out I think its something in the wiring though something may have shorted out and sent to much power to them. Nothing at all wrong with the engine passing people is nothing and no vibration what so ever. Actually as long as I don't get in trouble for this, I was at a stop light in Cleveland, Ohio and was going to race this '89 Supra, well since I'm telling the story I beat it bad, I've clocked it at 4.5 seconds to get to 60mph. Its pretty fast for as small as the engine is. Oh and if you would like to check it out heres my website http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/379172

Please, unless you enjoy visiting a dealership's repair shop every month, do not buy an Alero. I have had NUMEROUS problems. Though they are mostly covered under the warranty, it is a REAL pain in the bum to have the car in, then have to bring it back when they have the part, etc. Brakes went early- 24000 kms door locks- replaced X3!!!!! Trunk release- replaced X3!!! wiper motor drivers side window motor rust on panelling paint easily scratched emergency brake boot came apart at seams the visor has fallen out of the ceiling on me when driving radio buttons paint peeling The guys who drive me to and from my place know me by first name, and they never have to ask where I live. The folks at GM couldn't be more RUDE!!! When I approached them about my numerous problems they simply say, "what do you want me to do about it" over and over again. The title customer service means NOTHING to these people! The chumps left me a nice big oil boot print on my carpet following an oil change once.... that was a nice touch. Overall, I am disgusted with the quality of my first brand new vehicle, and the service has been horrible.

Great looking. Spunky engine performance. Nice handling. Nice sound system.

Weakness:

Seemingly low-quality interior materials. Brake rotors seem to be a common problem with Aleros. Already poor dealer support, promises to get even worse with the demise of the Oldsmobile brand.

I'm truly shocked to read all of these horrendous comments about the Olds Alero. I have a '99 GLS Sedan that I purchaced with 38000 miles on it, back in 2001. I until recently, I drove 55 miles round-trip to and from work, five days a week. As a result, the odometer just flipped 98000 yesterday. Through all of this, my Alero has only been in the shop three times. About a year and a half ago, both the water pump and the alternator konked out within the same month. Prior to that, I did have to have the front rotors replaced (as I've read about several times on this board). I had the rotors istalled at a brake shop (not a dealership), and the mechanic did tell me about how flawed the factory rotors were on Aleros. He replaced them with some aftermarkets, and though by sheer milage alone I know that I probably should have the brakes checked, they've never given me another problem. When I purchased the car, it was literally in showroom condition. I did however, always wonder why a car that had been so well kept by the previous owner, had a set of Pirelli tires on it (I've never known of a GM product to come from the factory sporting Pirellis). Based on this, I always assumed that the orginal tires must not have been very good. Having now read some of the messages on this board, I feel safe in saying that I must've made an accurate assumption. I will say that I have noticed that the leather on the driver's is wearing very thin, and begining to split at the seam. I long ago did notice that you have to press down very hard, and jiggle the directional pad to get the power side mirrors to operate (This was never a big issue to me, since I'm basically the only one who ever drives the car). The vent in the center of the dashboard also recently cracked, and has basically begun to simply decay... Aside from that though, I honestly have to say that I love my Alero. Even now officially out of production, it is still one of the very best looking cars on the road. It's a great handling little car, and though I agree with others on this board in that it's not a "race car," it also won't leave you embarassed when you try to jump most cars off a red light. The sound system is fantastic, I find the seats to generally be very confortable, and though the 3.4L V6 can at times sound a bit raucus under heavy acceleration, it is very smooth and responsive all other times. I feel badly for those who've had such a bad time with their Aleros, but I must have to believe that either those folks unfortunately picked lemons. On the other hand, maybe I just got lucky and landed a good one... Who knows? It's nearly paid for now, and I was looking forward to hanging on to it for at least a couple of car note-free years. Now after reading this board, I'm beginning to wonder if that can ever happen.

Car looks nice and handles well.

Weakness:

Poor Manufacturing

The car while handles nicely, has had some of the same problems most have had, my dash has come unglued and I've put 5 sets of front rotors on the car and 3 sets of brakes. I remember hearing that the first time I put rotors on my car, that there was a bulletin about the way that the rotors were made that led to the replacement of my rotors the first time. But my average replacement of my rotors has been an average about every 9500 miles.

Weakness:

-materials quality seems cheap -starting to fall apart -not a race car, as some people don't seem to understand

This car is your typical American everyday driver. It has decent speed, decent handling, decent ride. It's not spectacular in any area, but is a comfortable ride for the everyday haul. I bought this car used 2 years ago, and have put a lot of miles on it since then (60,000) and it has been very good to me until recently, when it apparently decided to start falling apart. It has 73,000 miles and I have recently replaced the: -brake pads and rotors (normal) $150 -burnt fan resistor $90 -broken hazard switch (internal) $60 -bad f/r hub $530 -lower intake gasket $600 -fog light $45 -hood hydraulics $60 Overall, it's not been a bad car, but I'm starting to get frustrated as of late...

Power, quiet around town, decent ride, better handling than an Accord.

Weakness:

Ride not as good as an Accord. V6 of the Alero can sound thrashy during passing manoeuvers.

Excellent Domestic Vehicle. Purchased new at dealer. This vehicle now has 80000 Km (52000 miles). Have replaced front and rear rotors...and this is normal wear for a domestic. Have replaced rotors with better aftermarket types, gives the vehicle a better balance between power (3.4 V6) and braking, feels safer and is safer to drive at higher highway speeds as a result. Heating and AC work very well. My rear seat passengers like the floor heating vents in the back. Interior (dashboard, seats, floors and doors) is fine, and still looks new. Good placement of controls for radio and ventilation. However, radio buttons are peeling. I use winter tires in winter, and am very happy with the results, disabling Traction Control, gives snow tires even more bite in winter snow, and ice. This car has less creak and groan and rattle than my wife's 2000 Honda Accord...and both have similar mileage. ( I have replaced brakes around the same time on both). Both left and right front hubs had to be replaced (bearing housing). Done under warranty. It is really important to remember, that all cars must be driven and taken care of in a responsible manner). Many comments about this car are directly attributable to the care or lack of by their owners. Take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you. BTW...this does fall short of the 3 series bimmers.....no doubt about that

I have had my Alero for about one year now, and have had no problems with it. It now has 65,000 miles on it and is doing just fine besides the normal things like the drivers window I just fixed that my self though, it only costs me 100 bucks. There are a few mods done to it, like a cold air intake system, header, and new exhaust system. Working on more stuff but that might be something to do with me not having many problems with it so far. I am truley sorry about all of you other guys' problems with yours, good luck in the future.

NEVER BUY AN ALERO!! I have had the car for 4 months and it has been in the shop 8 times. I have had to replace 4 tires on the driver side for unknown reasons to do with the car. I have had to replace the front passenger CB Joint along with the water pump, radiator, window regulator and motor on both sides, heater fuse every week.Window motors are 260. Not too nice to replace My flashers only work when they want Olds can't figure it out. The interior wears way too fast. The vinyl on the dash is cracking. The paint scratches easily. the gas mileage goes down the drain after 70,000. Need I say more?
