Smooth ride, spacious, great handles

I loved this car at first b/c it was a huge upgrade from the 1996 Geo prizm I had before. The car had 48,000 miles on it when I bought it and only 107,000 miles when I traded it in. But after a year I started have tons of problems. 1st my check engine light starting coming and then would stay on all the time and car not starting up the first time. Then my car started stalling out. I took the car in for service and was told my crank sensor needed to be replaced. $300 bucks. 2months later same problem but this time there was oil where it shouldn't be. To fix the problem they would have to replace something, plus new spark plugs, new wires all at a total of $1700. My sunroof stop working and wouldn't close all the way and caused damage to the interior of my car. My signal would stop working in the middle or wouldn't come on at all but then magically it would be working again. Several flat tires with the tires that came with the car. A total of 6flats. 4 new tires total of $400. I replaced this car with a 2000 Acura TL, 57,499 miles on it, nice.

Strength:

I like the power, the 3.5 V6 engine, the stocky look, and the highway driving capabilities. The interior comfort in the vehicle is nice but not stellar, but it has a tape deck for pete's sake. I don't see rust being a problem on this vehicle at all. All this automation though is too much for the car's electrical systems.

Weakness:

Still counting. Not sure I could have done better though with the price I paid.

Ok. Bought this car with 117000 kms and paid 4900 uncertified which was a good deal I thought. Then, $600 for front bearings and it was working fine. I had electrical problems such as signals not working for no reason, then it went away. Odd things like headlights dimming and heater fan changing speeds while driving. Also the interior reading light would fail to shut off with the switch and exterior air bottom wouldn't toggle in cold weather.
Then the kicker: after a month driving the transmission broke and needed replacing. $2400, so much for a good deal. The engine light that was coming on before the tranny is now reappearing, and the washer pump is now not operating. A small part I know, but I have serious doubts about this vehicle.

Weakness:

Poor manufactuere mantenance

When i first bought the car it was immaculate... 2 yars after i bought it the battery went out a month later it happened again (pos acdelco batteries) so i bought a differnt one and had no problems since.... Then my brakes i replaced them after a year of owning the car and they have squeeked since then.... The car rides beautiful... The Drivers power window went out in 2002 and has given me problems since...other than that the car is still beautiful and is in great condition with 160000 it still rides like i first bought her in 2005 i replaced the radiator and the thermostate and the water pumop but for some reason the car still overheats... but other than that she rides beautiful in town

The stereo system ( other than the CD player) takes a beating and keeps going
The power under the hood is hard to keep up with
The look is very appealing

Weakness:

The suspension design is terrible
The electrical system has too many flaws
The disc brake design needs some tweeking
The attena SUCKS

When my husband and I bought this car in 2001 it was the greatest vehicle we ever drove. The first problem was the alternater, 2 days after we picked it up. Next was the engine. At 90,000kms 2 cylinders went due to improper piston rings installed at assembly. I was without my car for 2 weeks ( Thank god for warranty ). About 6 months the car rode like a hay wagon, replaced all 4 struts for $600.00 and it was better but never the same.As it is right now we are on the 3rd set of struts since we baught them and the car is louder than my 91 Corsica which still has original struts. The CD player died in a year, the rear passenger side window motor has been replaced twice, the idler arm pulley seized and caused the serpantine belt to blow while cruising down the highway almost killing me. The brakes need replacing frequently. The pin in the disc brake system gets stuck in the plastic sleeve constantly causing excessive break wear and poor breaking capacity. The stearing is shot,it is tight to turn making turns very difficult to manuver. The transmission went at 130,000kms. The paint never stayed on the bottoms of the doors. The doors sit on each other and rattle causing excessive passanger compartment noise. The seals around the door handles fell out and needed replacing( good luck finding them ). The AC hasn't worked in years and will cost about $1000 to repair, and this causes the defrost to function improperly. The washer pump has gone, the heater motor went and is going again. When it is cold the gas door won't open. The ignition security went crazy causing the car to no longer recognize that the key was in the ignition. This would put the car in security mode and shut off the fuel supply. Try and put the car in neutral hit the dash above the ignition cylinder to realign the tumbles and start the car again while driving through town. This was $400 to repair with a used ignition being supplied to the dealership. The tires are too big for the wheel wells and when it snows you get a major snow build up that affects turning and there isn't enough room between the wheel well and the tire to clear out the snow. The front signal lights keep blowing and at 15 bucks a pop I stopped replacing them. I love the look and power of my family sedan but HATE THIS CAR !!! I will never buy a GM product again.

Comfort, features per dollar, handling, dependablity. Not another "me too" sedan.

Weakness:

None to mention.

I bought this car used with 40k miles. Features per dollar were outstanding. Great room and storage. Comfort and features galore. The car was very well enginered. Style means a lot to me and this car had it. At 178000 miles it was as solid and quiet as the day I bought it. Good power through the rev range and fair economy as well. Very smooth shifting trany. Regular service was all that was ever required. Handling was confident. It felt more nimble than the nearly 3 and 1/2 tons of car that it was. Very dependable too. I would still be driving it today if a semi hadn't ko'ed it. This made my third Olds. Too bad the brand is gone. Guess I'll be stuck with imports from now on.

Model Reviewed: GL V6 3800

Strength:

- Excellent proven engine...the 3800 can't be beat - Excellent highway driving - Good body rust prevention...no rust anywhere I can see...and the added plastic underskirt to prevent from scraping and stone chips...is a nice feature...but a pain in the ass for jacking it up - Quiet and comfortable car to drive...it glides off the road.

Weakness:

- MASSIVE electrical problems - Multitude of STUPID problems - poor interior quality - poor customer support via GM - Multitude of GM model specific parts raise the cost of replacement parts (i.e. socket for this car is unique...no other GM has it) - Like driving a school bus to part due to its turning radius - poor shock design - horid gasoline door which you will HATE in cold weather

Bought this vehicle as a replacement for my aging first car...my pontiac grand prix. I LOVED my grand prix...but this vehicle was soon to disappoint. I have had many STUPID problems with this vehicle but have kept it due to the fact that it has a great body on it and a superior engine. The ELECTRICAL system is majorly glitched here. Take turn signals...replaced about $70 in bulbs because moisture kept getting through the plastic caps for the headlight assembly. Solved...$145 for GM OEM special order turn signal sockets (2 sides). Windshield washer...hmm no liquid? Burned out pump...replaced...$40...switch control...$219. Hood jammed...would not open and nothing was put on it to bend it. It took the mechanic 45 minutes to get it open and another 20 minutes to rebend the steel and lubricate the spring assembly to open it. Gas door...if it snows and gets cold...you have to click the door remotely and hope it pops...so you are like click click click click and then boom...use your key to attempt to pry it open...irritating. Rear seat belts jammed...completely unusable. GM issued a recall to install clips to prevent the jam. They installed the clips...left the jam. Was like that your clips are being installed because they are to prevent the jam...replace the belts. They refused telling me that little kids probably jammed them which was simply not true. It was only after I called the government that they agreed to fix them. Horn went on the car...twice...once the electronics burned out the horn...it would regularly sound in the night waking neighbours up and pissing everyone off...and now the assembly in the steering column is gone. Ok...what else? Blower fan started making noise...left it for a week (because of work) and it stopped. Checked the fan and replaced it...still slow...replaced the capacitor...fixed. There was another $140 down the drain. On another note...the dash SHRUNK...meaning that the grate where the air comes out above the radio...shrunk 3/4 of an inch. Ya...that looks cool...thanks GM. The system also tends to brighten and darken the electrical system (ie internal lights, etc.) and this has not satisfactorily been resolved. Mechanically...I now have the A/C pully shifting and it is now grinding on the serpintine belt. Apparently I need to get the person to get a gear puller and work with that...oh...only another few hunderd...and of course this is the second time the AC was repaired. The strut design for this vehicle is HORRIBLE. COrrosion on the strut assembly (and not underneath the car or anywhere else) now requires that I spend $1500 or so replacing all of them. If I don't...it rattles like nothing when I drive over potholes and any bump in the road. I now have coolent leaks coming from the engine manifold and I am NOT putting more money into this vehicle...enough is enough. Thanks GM...this vehicle was the single reason I went from a die-hard GM nut (Hummer, GMC Trucks, Pontiac cas) to not buying one ever again. The way I have been treated as a customer for recalls and all my repairs for absolutely STUPID things that should not happen never fails to amaze me. Japanese cars - HO!

Speed, the cd player, the moonroof, i too beat alot of 'faster' cars off the line... like the grand am gts and other flashy cars that other people think they can beat everyone in.

Weakness:

The breaks squeak everytime I stop anywhere... I also hear something from the rear breaks as I am driving.(like something is hanging and bumping into the tires.)

So far I like the car alot. I did notice that the stereo gets pretty hot when used for awhile. My dealership has had to replace the power window and lock modules on both passenger and driver sides. I like the way it handles and it is incredibly fast.

Strength:

- strong engine at all speeds - interior layout and controls - very comfortable front and rear seats - smooth ride - huge trunk, great for golfers

Weakness:

- wind noise coming from side-view mirrors; need to apply GM bulletin - transmission can be problematique; needed to replace 2 solenoids at 74000 Km - sound system can hurt the ears after a while, and not necessarily playing loud. Tweaters seem to be the problem, reducing the treble helps.

Great car and design. Made for tall people, great value for the money.
