Strength:
Very torquey motor, "Lay-Z-Boy" front seats, great traction in snow, more than enough room
Weakness:
Passengers door is developing a rattle noise, 225/60-16 tires can get pricey, Bumpy highways can get a little "floaty" I purchased this car in November 99'' with 93K Mi. It has the SLE package with the wheels, leather, traction, Spoiler etc. It''s Bat mobile black with tinted windows and silver wheels and moldings. cool look. It is now creaping up on 130,000 and still runs great. The only problems I''ve had were An altinator at 98,000 and a Motor mount breaking at 125,000. If I had another chance to get this car again, I would but I''d add the Supercharger for highway Speeds, and a moonroof. everything else is great so far. Don''t get me wrong though the N/A 3800 has plenty of power but around 70-75MPH it starts to run outta breath. Ity is still plenty to burn up the front wheels on demand. ;-) |

Weakness:
True, needs to be worked on from time to time, but its a big car, i have no problem giving it the love it needs I''ve Been reading all of these reveiws, and all i hae to say is, i love this car, i have had NO problems with it, and even thjough ive only had it for a year, i know it will last for many more. It has 130,000 miles, i paid almost 3K for it, i got an EXCELLENT deal, prior to this car i had a toyota Camry, also a good car, but its transmission died, this car''s transmission is in excellent condition, i have replaced the mastor cilender, and am currently fixing the AC, i dont know why some of these people are stupid enouigh to pay 900 dollers to fix it, ill spend no more than 80, and mine will work just as well. VERY comfotable car, Very good pick up, i have the supercharged v-6, car always starts, gets pretty good gas milage, handeles exceptionally well considering size, all my friends love it and i would recomened a bonni to anyone. Strength:
Plenty of power, comfort, and decent handling for a car this size.
Weakness:
Can''t keep it out of the shop. I wish I had read some of these reviews first. I probably would not have purchased this vehicle. I had the manifold problem ($1,200) which begat the seized engine problem ($4,000) and had to replace the transmission ($2,000)the brakes, the struts, two thermostats, a broken valve spring, the serpentine belt and now will be lucky to get the car running again if the power train control module is the problem. I got the car at 76K, it is now at 86K and although I have replaced most of the major components, I doubt that it will make 100K. Comfortable, nicely sculptured seats, powerful motor, good acceleration, 3 star crashworthiness rating.
Weakness:
Don''t like the front end. I balanced the wheels that made an improvement, but I suspect that I may need new struts. Heard and read problems with the plastic intake manifold. Can anyone please tell me what signs to look for before any greater damage is caused? Lately the car developed a barely audible dull knock coming from the engine. It can only be heard at idle. Any suggestions? I love the car, very comfortable, front end kind of clunky, but goes straight. Bought the car in 1999 with 50000 miles on it. Shortly after I bought it had to replace the alternator. Had transmission shifting problem. It was most noticeable when making a rolling stop and the tranny did not shift down fast enough. Paid a 1500 dollar repair bill, but I believe it probably was a modulator valve only. The leaky master cylinder was replaced at 60000 miles. Replaced the front brake pads and rotors at 68000 miles. Again... I had the plastic mainfold replaced, and the dealer was very fair about it, charging me only for an hour labor and parts. But, I found out something rather interesting... Pontiac owners are not alone with this problem. Evidently, this problem affects every GM 3.8 liter "3800 series II" V6 made, including those in Olds, Chevys, Buick, GMC, and even the grand Cadys. A friend of mine had to have the exact same part replaced in his 1999 Olds Intrigue. While personally I feel a little better about this now (knowing it isn''''t just the Pontiac), it still seems GM should do something about this to make it right. But at least in my case, no hard feelings. And while I know this is against the rules, I raise the rating because the dealer went out of his way to make this right for me. Nice looking car, lots of interior and trunk room, has power when you want it (well, that is, when it''s not in the shop...)
Weakness:
Expensive parts and rotten performance. The lowest mileage replacement engine the mechanic could find had 102,000 miles on it, so we don''t even get a low mileage engine out of the deal. We are definitely gun shy and will most likely decide to sell the car before we have to mortgage the house! Background: Were looking for a "newer," bigger car for teenager. Didn''t want an old beater; wanted soemthing with safety features and enough room for his 6''3" body. Found a black Bonneville with 114,900 miles. It fit the DS (dear son) well, and the spoiler took it out of the old fogies category to something a kid would like to drive. Mileage was "not actual"; were told it had been repossessed at one point and mileage couldn''t be verified. Body was in great shape; interior was pretty good. The steering wheel controls for the radio didn''t work, ditto for the volume knob (volume could be controlled by moving the equalizer buttons.) Plastic around the door was cracked in a couple of places, cloth ceiling liner was sagging a bit, courtesy light covers were missing. There were a couple of other little things like that, but the leather seats were in great shape, the floor and mats were clean, power seats and windows worked fine. Ds forked over his hard-earned money, drove home the proud owner of a roomy, sharp-looking car. A week and half later the car was in the shop having a rebuilt alternator put in. Went to pick it up, and as the car was being backed out of the mechanic''s garage, the mechanic noticed a little puddle of anti-freeze. So, back Bonnie went for a gasket. The next night, we went in to pick it up, and the mechanic told us he discovered oil leaking around a gasket when they started the car up. So, back Bonnie went for another gasket. The next night we took it home. ($230) Within a month, a very noticeable shimmy from side to side was corrected with two good condition used tires. Necessary maintenance. ($60) Same time frame: the heater was working poorly. Checked gauges and fluid levels. A week or so later, the car overheated and went back to the shop. "Needs a water pump," says the mechanic. Next morning, Mr. Mechanic calls and says, "We''ve got big trouble with that car." It needs a head gasket. ($590 for water pump and head gasket) We pick the car up on a Saturday morning; Saturday night, the dash lights are blinking. Hubby says it''s probably loose connections. Car is driven 9 miles Sunday and parked until Wednesday noon, ds calls: Bonnie broke down on his way to work. Mechanic tows car and tells us "That boy needs an engine." (Est. $650) Repairs = just under 50% of initial purchase Similar Products Used: We bought a Plymouth Voyager new in 1988 (great vehicle for us) and a used one (Grand LE ''94 with 140,000 miles on it) in 1999. It''s got 205,000 on it now and hasn''t had any major repairs at all. |

Buick 3.8L V6, a PROVEN powerful and reliable engine.
Weakness:
Previous owners highly neglected it, and I am having to repair and/or prevent the damage that have caused. I haven''t had this car quite long enough to determine its worth. I do know, however, that mine has been seriously neglected by the previous owner. I bought it with 85,000 miles on it because I desperately needed a car with less than 160,000. So far, I haven''t had any real problems with it, thanks to me finding the sludge that some people call oil in the engine, and the rust colored cruddy sludge that was used as coolant before actually driving it across country. I have since did major cleaning to the engine and cooling system and, as of right now, it seems to be doing fine. If I do have any major problems though, I will most likely place the blame on the previous owners rather than the car itself. I will post again in about 6 months with me experience with it from this point on. I love the way it looks, and I did whoop a fairly late model, 3.8L equipped Ford Thunderbird, just hours before changing the spark plugs and realizing that they have probably been in the car since it left the factory being as that the ground electrode was pretty much non exsistant and the cap was damn near an eigth of an inch. So, that in itself speaks for the power. I am going to do somemore maintence on it and maybe a little tweaking and see if i cant get some real power out of the second generation Grand National engine. Thats right, for you people that didn''t know, that 3.8 is the Buick 3.8 that powered the turbocharged 300hp GNX in 1987. The low marks are only MY car because of the neglect it suffered prior to me obtaining it. Good acceleration for a non-turbo car of this size. Comfortable, stylish, and apparently safe.
Weakness:
Too many "easter eggs". It is a sproty car, especially for one of GM''''s larger models. It has great acceleration, handling, and styling. Unfortunately all that hides little gremlins. I bought the car used, and I was not expecting to buy the perfect car. Up untill I stumbled across this site, though, I thought I had. After reading post after post about this "plastic mainfold" I called the service department at the dealership about it. He told that indeed I could and should expect problems with it. This would not bother me, except for the fact that I asked the very same person before I bought the car if I should expect any major problems with it, and he told "The front pads wear out quickly." I have not had any problems with the car, but I am pre-emptively having this mainfold replaced so I don''''t run into any problems down the road. My quarrel is not with GM or even the car, but rather the dealer and service manager at the dealership. After confronting the service manager about his initial recomendations, he agreed to significantly lower the price of the service, but I am still very disappointed. I intend on having this repaired and I will continue enjoying this otherwise fine automobile. If you can get the dealer to be honest about the plastic mainfold problem upfront then I would highly recomend this car, as it is well worth it, even after the cost of the repair.
