Strength:

Smooth engine, ample acceleration, good looks, reasonably good sound system. Back seat space is better than most 4dr sporty midsize models.

Weakness:

Engine is difficult to service, numerous small problems, warped brake rotors, persistent wind noise from passenger front door, greater than normal tire/road noise on some pavement surfaces.

This car is fun to drive, with a responsive engine and reasonably good handling. Many small problems experienced, including: warped brake rotors, leaking fuel pressure regulator, leaking fuel line, peeling paint on rearview mirrors, persistent wind noise from passenger front door. No one has been able to determine the source of the wind noise. The fuel pressure regulator leak was intermittent but very annoying when it occurred (very strong fuel odor through ventilation system). I was able to isolate it and replace it myself - GM charged about $80 for this little part which should cost no more than $20. Also have had repetitive problems with the driver's door electric locking mechanism, when an actuator end becomes dislocated from a socket on the mechanism. I've become proficient at removing and installing the interior door panel. Engine is very smooth, responsive, and consumes virtually no oil (less than 8 oz. per 1000 miles). I hope engine problems are minimal, because access to much of the engine and transmission is poor, making service by owner or mechanic more difficult than it should be.

Strength:

The acceleration is very strong. This 3400 v6 makes the previous 3100 v6 look like light weight. The exterior styling is unique, sporty, and attactive. The interior styling has an upper scale ambiance.

Weakness:

This car attracts too much unwanted attention and may not be suitable for introverts. The fuel economy is not the best. The seats are nice looking but a bit uncomfortable. The disc breaks are good but not great.

I would recommend the 1999-2000 pontiac Grandam gt version over any other American or foreign made v6 cars because it offers an "experience" that no other of its kind can compare. It packs a healthy dose of power, flash, and class for a little cash.

Strength:

Hot looking (mine is purple) machine that is solidly built. No mechanical problems with over 150,000 on the odometer. Excellent handling and above average acceleration. The 3.1 V6 is torquey and smooth. The only thing missing is a 5spd manual (although the 4spd auto is quite good). Excellent interior storage (5 cup holders up front!). Headlights are great at night, instrumentation is great. Stereo AM/FM Cassette with 5 band eq is loud and clear. Excellent fuel economy when driven softly. The steering wheel is the best I've ever had.

Weakness:

Fog light bulbs burn out like every three months. Needs a manual transmission option. Speed governor cuts off the engine at 185kmh - bummer!

I bought the car brand new in 1995. I love the low slung ride and razor sharp steering. This car rides very firmly and has excellent reflexes. Thrust is quite good from the V6 engine, and the sounds it makes is wonderful. I used to have a 1990 Cavalier Z24 with the same engine but with a 5 speed manual. That's the only thing lacking on the 95 GT - if it had a manual tranny, it would be perfect!

Larger and faster than the 95 Nissan Altima. Way better looking and better handling than the Accord.

Strength:

QUIET SMOOTH RIDE GREAT STEREO SYSTEM AND EASY TO MANUVER.

Weakness:

SOME PROBLEMS WITH SPEAKERS AND TURNSIGNALS THAT DIDN'T WORK AFTER 6 MONTHS. IT ISN'T VERY FAST WHEN YOU NEED TO TAKE OFF, BUT ONCE YOU GET IT GOING IT CAN BE KINDA QUICK

THE GRAND AM GT1 MODEL COMES WITH ALL THE BELLS AND WISTLES, HOWEVER IT'S NOT AS FAST AS ONE WOULD HOPE. IT CAN DRIVE PRETTY FAST ONCE IT GET'S GOING BUT IF YOU WANT TO SHOW OFF AND PEEL OUT OR LEAVE SOMEONE BEHIND AT THE LINE IT MIGHT NOT WORK TO WELL. IN THE SNOW THE TIRES THAT CAME WITH IT SLIP ONCE IN A WHILE, IF YOU DRIVE IT WELL THOUGH, IT ISN'T A BAD CAR FOR THE SNOW AT ALL! SOMETIMES WHEN IT RAINS, AND IF YOU HAVE WORN DOWN THE TRED A LITTLE ON THE TIRES, IT WILL SLIP FROM BEHIND WHILE DOING A SIMPLE TURN

Strength:

i like the fact that it is a sporty car and has a 3.1 v6.

Weakness:

brakes are horrible i have to get them changed at least every 3,000 miles. the power windows are slow and one of them is broke, i have had major oil leakage, serpetine belt, transmission problems, abs don't always work, wipers are very slow

when i first got the car it had 71,000 miles on it so i knew there were going to be some problems with it. i have had it in the ditch quite a few times and i have hit a couple of deer. i live 2 hrs away from where i go to school and i went home a lot on weekends and that put a lot of ware on my car. i more or less like the style of the car as far as it ran it was hell. if i got one thing fixed then another thing was broken. i am going to try a 2001 grand am gt couple in a couple of days. but overall it is a good car if u don't have much money to spend and for a younger drive. it is more style

Model Reviewed: Grand Am SE 2-door

Strength:

Nice styling, very sporty looking. Interior is comfortable and I like the molded/curved look of the dash that you don't get in a lot of imports. Nice acceleration and power in 2nd, 3rd (it is an automatic). Gas mileage is acceptable in overdrive.

Weakness:

It really doesn't feel like V6 sometimes, especially when in overdrive. I usually drop it down to 3rd when I want some extra power (for passing etc...). The problem is that it eats gas when I do that. It isn't as responsive to the gas peddle as I would like. I find that the engine lags behind me pressing down on the peddle (in all gears really).

The car is in excellent condition. I was amazed at how spotless it was when I found it. The exterior and interiors are nearly flawless. I was impressed for a 3 year old car. Everything is in working order. All power/remote controls are in perfect working order. My first test drive was encouraging, but I wish I had of pushed it a little harder during that time. The car does have good power and acceleration (a lot better than the 4 cylinder imports I tested), but it's not what I expected on the high end. I purposely went for a V6 for the extra power. My girlfriend has a 93 Cavalier RS (also a 3.1 V6) and it feels like it has more pick-up. Granted, that is a much lighter car, but the engine is responsive and really sucks you back in your seat if you step on the gas. I was hoping for more of that feel in this car. I recommend controlling the shifting manually when you really want some extra power (just watch that gas gauge go!). However, I haven't experienced any of the problems that the other 98 owners have. I haven't had the car that long yet so we shall see, but it has 70k on it right now and runs/looks like new.
