I like the way my car drives in the snow, the outer look, the cd player, and the smooth way it rides.

Weakness:

I just purchused this car and it seems as though the brakes are making noises and also I here a noise coming from the window when I am on the highway, I also feel that I have a hard time parking because the back is high.

My experience with this automobile is very fine except for the weakness discribed above, other than that I think that this is a pleasent car to drive and I would tell anyone to buy it.

Strength:

I have to admit I really liked the interior of the car, it was very roomy, comfortable and kind of cool/tough looking. It had a really handy compartment over the rearview mirror for things like garage door openers and parking cards. The centre console was a very good size and held a number of cd's and the usual junk.
The trunk was big, I could pack for a week of camping or cottaging with little worry to space.
I liked having the fog lights, they did next to nothing in terms of lighting but they looked good.

Weakness:

Where do I start?
I called the car Christine, because it just kept falling apart , I thought it to be possessed
The brakes, when I got the car (new) the rotors were warped causing a brake shudder... this being my first new car I thought this strumming vibration was the ABS. As time went on this shudder became terrifying at highway speeds of 100km and up, the car would vibrate so bad that I could barely control the car, the steering wheel shook violently when I touched the brake and there was a noise from the rear of the car that was not unlike the sound of a very sick cow in heat. (all repaired under warranty)

The paint job drove me crazy, it looked fine but was so thin that if anything brushed up against it it would just peel back leaving the black of whatever the car was made out of showing through.

The metal trim that ran vertically along the sides of the front windshield for some reason popped up as if it were pried with a screwdriver (this apparently happens all the time and is covered under warranty)

One day in december when it was particularly nice outside I was driving and the front window split from the very top down the middle and stopped a few inches below the rearview mirror, I thought it was a drop of water going down the window it happened so quickly.

The factory wipers were so crappy that in rain or snow I could barely clear a visible path on my window to see, i don't know if they were dull or not but a trip to Canadian Tire and 30 bucks fixed that problem.

The steering was becoming stiff and the car squeaked when I turned the steering wheel at first then grew to a groan, I took the car in for a check up and found out that the seams on the power steering hose had split. (replaced under warranty)

A screw fell out from under the steering wheel one day, I am an artist not a mechanic so I ignored it, who knows what it was for.

The front door speakers (both) blew shortly after I got the car. I know I may listen to the beats a little loud but the speakers should be able to handle the stereo turned up to 7 with the bass to +4.

I also found the car to be an utter pig on gas, it would suck back a full tank of extremely overpriced Canadian gasoline in a 3 hour trip. This problem never got better, even after the 2000km (or whatever) break in period. It just kept gorfing the precious liquid like a porno star.

Can you say squeaky.... the car was bloody noisy, at best it sounded like a cooler full or styrofoam on a paint mixer.

The heater, okay c'mon, I live in Canada it gets cold here, really cold. The heater in this car took at least 20 minutes to start getting even remotely comfortable. My new Sunfire takes 5.

Now for the biggest long term, unavoidable, unfixable nightmare of the car. BLINDSPOTS, it was just one huge blindspot. I almost smacked into so many things because they were in the foot-and-a-half rear/side blindspots made by the area from the rear passenger window frame to the frame of the back window. This huge triangle of utter invisibility was like the automotive equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle... I lost so many cars and trucks in that thing. It got to the point where I relied only on the mirrors.
The ones to the side of the front window were pretty misleading as well, they are about 5" thick and can caus a blindspot when turning.

Finally, the rear end of this jacked up Deathwagon was so high that it was nearly impossible to parallel park, I live in a major metropolitan city where you have to parallel park every day and I could never tell how close I was to the car behind me. I eventually came up with a formula to figure the distance, if I felt I was too close and almost about to back up into the car behind me I actually had 3 more feet to back up before I hit the next car. Before I figured this out I must have dented 1000 3rd party bumpers and "Ontario keep it beautiful" license plates.

Pontiacs are made from snot and toothpicks,
my nightmare ended when my girlfriend T-boned a Jimmy at 50km/hour on a residential street. the Jimmy walked away with a few grand in damage. But true to form "Christine" popped both airbags and the front end quickly became the middle of the car and the trunk burst through the back seat, I think the seat belt (driver's) exploded too. I fear what would have happened at 80km/h.

Like I said... snot and toothpicks. You should only buy this car if you are a licenced GM mechanic or are married to one.
By the way, I only had the car for a year and a half.

If you value your life and sanity do not buy a Pontiac Grand Am.
Go European, they are built to last.

Strength:

This car handles and drives quite nicely. It's very smooth (you don't feel very much after crossing the railroad tracks at a crossing), and, for a 4 cylinder, has very good pickup. It's a very comfortable car to drive, with lots of room for everybody, and a driver friendly dash that's much easier to read than some others I've seen. The in-dash starter is terrific, and even though the trunk is a bit high, the large side view mirrors on both sides help a lot with visibility. I really like the ribbed styling, which, along with its wide, aggressive stance, gives it a distinct look, which certainly makes it stand it over the similar Oldsmobile Alero. Really enjoy the handling as well, for there's almost no lean. Monsoon 8-speaker sound system is, in a nutshell, awesome! There's certainly more than enough spaces, front and back, for cups (unless you've got one of those "Big Gulp" drinks).
Braking is quite good.

Weakness:

Compared to the V-6, the 4 is noisy. Those inside pockets on both front doors could definitely be longer, and deeper. The high trunk can make backing up and parallel parking a bit dicey. It's still a bit weird having no transmission oil dipstick.

Simply put, I recommend it. It's a pleasure to drive. Believe me, this baby has done quite well with the snow we've been getting. The last big one we had, "Big Red" just rolled on out of our snowbound parking lot with barely a growl. It's a good, comfortable, travelling vehicle with lots of goodies at a decent price. If that's what you're looking for, definitely check out a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am!

Compared to the 1991 Pontiac Grand Am I owned for four years (until the Quad 4 blew a head gasket), the 2001 Grand Am is a major improvement.

It's not only fun to drive, but comfortable, too, and turns a head or
two. I'd have preferred the V-6, but the 4 is more than adequate.
It's not a BMW, but it's way more fun than a Toyota Camry or Buick Regal, in my opinion.

Model Reviewed: Grand Am SE 4 door

Strength:

Engine power, styling and handling.

Weakness:

The brakes, or lack of. Other gripes below.

The good...

Engine power was more than adequate. I found the V6 3.1 engine a joy when passing other cars on the highway. I never once worried about whether I could do it fast enough (stopping was another issue, see below).

I also found the body styling and fit fairly appealing. Doors and windows were nicely flush, giving low wind sound at highway speeds. There was a reasonable amount of room in the front, with both seats quite comfortable and adjustable.
Handling was good after a tune up and lube job.
Truck space was large-ish, with a fair bit of room for luggage, and more with the split seat down.

The Bad...

The brakes were awful. The ABS systems on this car would occasionally cut out with an odd crunching/grinding sound and leave me with no power brakes. Only with pumping quickly could I stop. "Fixed" twice for $1800, yet this behaviour would return intermittantly. Rather frightening. I found I started to cringe at stop signs, scaring little old ladies with my grimaces as I approached.

Small parts of the dash would occasionally fall off. Screws holding the inside panels would pop out on small bumps. I still have a collection of three that I couldn't locate their origin. Perhaps this model comes with extras just in case.

Side visibility was oddly slightly blocked by the protruding seatbelt mounts on the pillars. I found I always had to lean forward to see side to side. Not that big of a problem, as I was generally too busy praying to the brake gods to be overly worried what was approaching from the sides.

The back seats were not for adults, unless they had the flexibility and frame of a petite 60 lb gymnast.

All in all, a fairly powerful, reasonably attractive, hard to stop car.

Similar Products Used:

1995 Dodge Stratus and Honda Accord: The Dodge was considerably less powerful and had a mushier feel. The Accords felt tighter, but had less power. However, both cars were able to use their own brakes to stop, a pleasant change from the Grand Am.

Swoopy styling, very good brakes, excellent low and midrange power, cool red instrument lighting, excellent stereo/cd system, draws attention and Ram Air induction.

Weakness:

The sport buckets are horrible, I hate the rattle of the sunroof and it cries out for 'Supercharged' power.

It has been a pleasure owning this '99 GT1. The admiring glances and the rumble of my 'Borla' exhaust is exciting. I'm doing performance upgrades and the vehicle is taking to them nicely. I'm waiting for the supercharger, which will be available soon. When all the upgrades are complete(including SUPERCHARGER), I should be making close to 300 HORSEPOWER.

BRAKES HAVE TO BE THE WORST, FAULTY WINDOW MECHANISIM, POWER STEERING WENT AT 18,00KM, BRAKES ROTERS BEARINGS PADS ALL WHENT AT 50,000KM. DEFECTIVE RIMS. ALL BUT THE DOORS HAVE BROKEN DOWN ON THIS PIECE OF JUNK

ALL IN ALL, THIS IS THE WORST VEHICULE WE HAVE EVER PURCHASED . I WOULD NOT SUGGEST THIS VEHICULE TO ANYONE. THE DEALER KEEPS TELLING US THAT THAT IS NORMAL FOR A GRAND AM GT. WELL HE CAN KEEP THE DAMN PIECE OF JUNK. WE ARE ALREADY LOOKING TO GET RID OF IT. EVERYTIME I LOOK AT THE CAR I JUST WANT TO BEAT THE HECK OUT OF IT.

Strength:

Stock power is really good. Handling is great. This car can fly around corners quick. It has a big trunk, which comes in handy. It also catches peoples attention. Nice on long trips. Chics like it! Quiet cabin too. There is a supercharger being made for this car as I speak. Power will go to 262 horses. Nice! Research and you might find it..

Weakness:

From what I hear, some of the 3.4 engines are getting oil leaks in the lower manifold gasket. Well mine did. The brakes needed attention too. Both of these problems the dealer fixed. Good service at the service center. The seats(I don't have leather) do not support very well at all. I heard leather ones are better. Especially around bends at higher speeds. Not real sure footed in the snow, but what sport car is?

Overall, even though I've had some problems which have been fixed, I like this car. It's fast, fun to drive, and it builds confidence in your driving style. Steering is quick and nimble and the actual steering wheel is easy to grip. I got 26,000 miles on it and it's still very tight.

Strength:

This is my third pontiac...I just traded my 99 for a 01...I've been hit in both cars...The other cars involved were close to totalled yet the pontiac was able to drive away. I hold to this car, it is built STRONG. If it wasn't for this car my son might not be alive today. I back the grand am.

Weakness:

The inside panels along the door snap off easy and have a tendency to break. Easy and cheap to replace, the dealerships normally cover it under warranty.

I will continue to buy Pontiac, I would rather little things go bad than to loose my life in a wreck because I want my car to be prettier than someone else's car. This is a safe car and twice, in two different Grand Am's I've been hit, one in a major accident. I back up this car, I was the only one not towed away after a four car wreck. It looks good, it drives lovely and it is built well. If your after power alone, this is not the car you're after, if you want typical power and safety and you don't want to feel like your driving the "family car" than this is the right car...

Similar Products Used:

Ford Mustang, Chrysler Sebring/ Sebrings have a tendency to loose the side moldings and Fords are not built as strong. I think they are prettier than the Grand am, yet the Pontiac drives smoother and I think it would hold up any day in a wreck compared to the others.
