Strength:

The car looks hot and gets a lot of looks. Handles great, is very quick with the Ram Air V6. Chrome wheels make the car. Seats are nice. Dash board material quality is top noch vinyl. Great to drive. Great sound system.

Weakness:

Way to many fashion lines on the car. If you are looking
at a 2000 or newer, they used really cheap vinyl on the doors. 99 models got cloth. Don't get a flat, tires are EXPENSIVE!

I would definately own another one. I don't like that everyone else has one, but it is fun to drive and looks great. I would recomend it to anyone. I lease mine, but I get the GM employee family discount so it's a really cheap payment.

Strength:

Lots of power. I drive all highway miles, and this car is able to keep up with if not outrun most other cars. I love the look, very sporty, yet still a sedan. After just 5 months with the car, I drove it from Houston to Denver, and it was a very comfortable drive. I love the cruise control, comes in very handy on long road trips. I find the style on the inside attractive, and the radio system is great. I love the looks this car gets!!

Weakness:

Engine sometimes has trouble starting up. Almost sounds like it wants to die, but then it starts right up. I've brought it to the dealership and they are unable to duplicate the complaint. Had the rotors changed after 15,000 miles (common complaint the Service manager said, Pontiac is trying to fix this problem). I've noticed that my side mirrors are beginning to fade. Should be covered under warranty so I'm not worried.

When I decided the time had come to buy a new car, I figured I was going to buy a Honda Civic. It fell in my price range, and it was one of the best when it came to reliability. I had driven a 93 Escort for 7 years, and never had a problem, never brought in for maintenance, and never had to invest more money into it after I had paid it off. I expected the same in my next car. I ended up test driving a Galant and a Grand Am. When I told the Mitsubishi dealer my decision was between the Galant and the Grand Am his exact words were "no competition". He was right. The Grand Am offered me more. Better acceleration, a sporty feel, attractive styling both inside and out, and loads of features! I was sold. For the same amount of money I would of invested in a boxy Civic, I drove home in a well equipped, sporty-sedan. Yes, I've had a few problems and had to bring it in, but nothing that the warranty wouldn't cover, and a few problems are expected. So far I am very happy and would recommend the Grand Am to anyone in the market for a new vehicle.

Test drove a Mitsubishi Galant before I purchased the Grand Am. The Galant is a nice car, has good pick-up, I believe it had 150hp, and Mistubishi is a great car maker, but the mistake I made was I drove the Grand Am first. A Galant is more of a family type car. At 25, I'm looking for something more sporty....the Grand AM was perfect!!

So far, I love everything on this car.

Weakness:

Nothing. Had a circuit board go for my interior lighting, but the dealer went out of thier way to repair it.

Paid $14970. Would Definately recommend this car. It is a great car for the money. Anyone who loves a sporty car should look at the Grand Am. It is just a very fun car to drive.

Model Reviewed: Grand AM SE 2.4 L4

Strength:

Quick for 4 cylinder, especially since the introduction of the counterbalance shafts in '95. Like the long list of standard equipment. Like the ABS/Traction Control features. Good paint and build quality for a GM product low on their model line-up. Dealership repair quality and customer service better than I expected. Comfortable on long trips. No major squeaks, rattles or missing pieces after 62K miles. All the original equipment still works quite well.

Weakness:

The front brakes only last about 20k before they need replacement. I have been unsuccessful in finding the cause of rear brake drums binding on hot days in city traffic or when brakes used alot in normal city traffic. Gas mileage could be higher for only 4 cylinders (even though I do drive it hard and fast at times). I've had to replace the alternator and battery at 40K, water pump at 42K, repair gas leak at 38K, replaced 2 sets of front rotors by 40K, steering knuckles at 40K. Intermittent and brief failure of power window motors. Radio volume knob is not very responsive (gets louder when attempting to reduce volume level at times. Poor placement of front console cup holder (impedes proper use of gear selector when cup is in place). Poor design of sun visors and rear view mirror (can't adjust drivers side sun visor without knocking the rearview mirror out of place). Excessive noise from ABS and traction control when engaged. Transmission speed governer limited to 108 MPH.

Good car compared to similar size models from Ford,Chrysler and Imports.
Tried the Contour/Mystique and hated it all around. Chryler's Stratus/Cirrus/Breeze models are to weak and cheap all around. Nissan's Altima is to noisy, Mazda's 626 is also to weak. Too bad Toyota doesn't have a entry level mid-size because the Camry is to expensive and weak (4cyl) and its also very boring to drive. And don't get me started on Mitsubishi, Hyundai and all the other sub standard import models

Model Reviewed: Pontiac Grand Am GT (4-Door)

Strength:

First of all, the styling is very unique and attractive. The colr of mine is "teal-green metallic". I'm 6'2" and the front interior room is more than adequate. The front console is very ergonomically designed and most things are easily reached. Visibility to the road is good front to back with few blind spots. The motor is quite strong. Rated at 205 lb/ft of tourqe it is very fun to drive around town. The variable assist steering makes turning a breeze. In tight spots the steering wheel turns easily and on the freeway it's tighter and more responsive. The longer 4-door still is very agile around turns even at higher than normal speeds. I have since upgraded wheels and tires however, but the stock set-up was fine. On the inside the motor has a ponounced exhaust and throttle body note under high revs. The car sits low and wide and has a fairly intimidating stance. It definately stands out from the crowd.

Weakness:

As much as I like about this car there are a more than equal amount of problems that I've had with it. First with fewer than 5k on the odometer the transmission wouldn't hook up once going from first to second (supposedly the ECU was changed to fix this). After this the trunk lock decided not to work with the key (replaced under warranty). Not much later the timing belt was replaced due to premature wear. Next the front door panels started to bubble (replaced under warranty). The brake pedal was out of adjustment (this made the brake lights stay on all the time). For some unknown reason, one day I rolled down the front two windows and heard a scraping noise. Later when I rolled them up I was surprised to see vertical scratches up and down the passenger side window. At the time I thought it was sand or something. (I know this is through no fault of my own, but I have yet to inquire about this at the dealership). The WORST PROBLEM of all are the FRONT BRAKE ROTORS. The stock rotors are very prone to warping and can only be turned once or twice before they have to be replaced. The replacement rotors are supposedly "redesigned" to eliminate this. The sign of a warped rotor is a CONSTANT rubbing noise coming from the front wheeels at low speed coasting and braking. This problem has occurred once at about 15k miles. For all of it's responsiveness the car bounces a liitle through tight high-speed turns. I currently have 19K miles on the car.

I paid 19,480, in December of 1998 after heavy negotiations with the dealership. I'm in a SMART BUY program and my payments are under $200 a month. Unfortunately this program is geared toward keeping the buyer in a GM vehicle. I can trade this car in after 48 months and whatever the value is OVER my residual payment of $9000 I can put towards a new GM car. This is great if I wasn't so completely turned of by the problems with this car and GM's lack of customer service. Unfortunately for GM, I'm going to refinance to own and eat the interest so I can trade it in on a Volkswagen or Audi!!!

Strength:

I love this car. Even though it's only a 2.2 4 cyl in it, it's got great pickup and great gas milage. The seats are comfortable and the stereo is good (6 speaker w/ a cd player).

Weakness:

The brakes kinda suck. This line of cars seems to have a brake problem. The car shakes like crazy when you try to stop. I have tried to remedy the problem, but no luck. However...I must say the antilock brakes have saved my ass twice in snow/ice conditions. I also had a coolent problem, but I think that had more to do with the dealership than the car.

Overall I still like this car. I've put a ton of miles on it, and I find it a comfortable car with good handling. I would recommend test driving and seeing how the brakes work before buying. I know several people that have had similar problems with the breaks (even 99 and 2000 models).

Great Power, good gas milage (I get about 300miles-highway to a tank) lots of room, low maintenance

Weakness:

turns tight... other than that, it's a charm

This car is a gem. Definantly a second car or a Teens first car. Terribly fast. EXCELLENT gas milage. Never had a problem with it.. EVER. I bought it with 40,000 miles on it and it runs like a beast. I take this car on major beltways, freeways, highways u name it. I put about 70 miles on it a day. I put regular octane gas in it and it gives me great milage (more that what the dealership even quoted!) I couldn't be happier. If I ever get rid of it, or it gives out one long day from now, I'll trade it for another Grand AM!!
