2-door se1 w/ 3.4l
Strength:
design, style and engine. excellent ergonomics and interior space plus layout. dependability and safety.
Weakness:
brakes, very very limited engine upgrades for the v6. if only edelbrock or GM would manufacture high performance mods for the 3.4l I would want to marry this car. Like I said if there were engine mods such as high performance cams, intakes, headers, etc. I would be very, very satisfied with this car. even though it has alot of pickup as is. I still wish I had the ram-air and taller rearend ratio. but this costed extra $$$ so I opted for less in hopes of future upgading. the car is designed inside and out very well. i have over 30,000 miles on the odometer and the only problem I have had are with the breaks. those damn breaks we all seem to be b***hing about. oh well I will install a high quality set of rotors and pads in the future and am sure this will solve that problem. I recommend this car to anyone as long as they do not buy the identical model. I like to be different. Similar Products Used: owned luminas, skylarks, sunbirds, firebirds, camaros and chevy trucks and overall feel these late model grand am's are the cars I was ment to own and drive. |

I Like the look, the style, and the stereo.
Weakness:
It rides like a log truck. It has quit on me. I had to change the air filter the first 3000 miles. I don't even live on a dirt road. Because they look good but they are not worth the money. And they tear up to easy. Similar Products Used: I had an Honda civic and it rode really smooth. And did not even tear up. |

Grand Am
Strength:
Beautiful, sporty, but still big enough for the family. Comfortable, dependable, good stereo, huge trunk, very nice dash layout, and once again, beautiful car!
Weakness:
I have the four cylinder, and therefore it could use a bit more pick up. Also, when you have the heat on full blast, the air goes right in your eyes. It also is pretty bad on gas. Would definitely recommend the Grand Am. I would also say with total certainty that it is worth it to spend the extra money and get a 6 cylinder. The Grand Am is a beautiful, sporty car and it comes with very high recommendations from me. Overall, if I totalled this car, I would run right out and buy the same car...except of course 6 cylinder! I also wouldn't get black, because is it ever hard to keep clean! Similar Products Used: Chev Lumina. Lumina is quicker, but I like the look of my Grand Am better. |

Great reliable transportation. I purchased my '93 Grand Am GT used w/approx. 92,500 miles in Aug. '97. Curently, it is driven daily and has 160,000 miles. It still runs like the day I bought it. This was my first car and I would say it is a good first car for anyone.
Weakness:
The exhaust system claims to be so great, but it rusts out and I have to replace it every year. I'm on my third and need a fourth. Don't go to The Muffler Man to get an exahust system...they used the cheapest crap for my exhaust system. At one time they put new crome tips on the end of my tail pipes, and they looked like four soup cans on sticks." I latter went to another place and had the original stock tips put back on. Nice looking car, good engine(quad 4), comfortable interior if you are a smaller person
Weakness:
Expensive repairs, terrible service after the sale (dealership/Pontiac), many problems with engine light coming on, bad ABS brakes, engine rattle, poor gas milage I will begin by saying I dont believe all Pontiacs are bad, I have just a couple bad experiences. Regarding the 97 Grand Am, 1 month after purchase the brakes started to shudder and the engine light was always coming on. Covered under warranty, no problem. Back in within two months for the engine light problem. In a third time a couple months later for same problem. Once again about three months after that. Keep in mind, no explaination from service department as to why this happened. The last time in the wife actually took it in, as I was out of town (it is her car). The service department convinced told her she needed her oil changed and proceeded to do so. She had just had it done two weeks ago with the window sticky to prove it. She filled out a customer service form with the negative feedback, but it was probably disregarded. Two years into ownership, she came out from work to find her windshield with a 2 foot crack in it originating under the wiper blade and running horizontally. She took the car to the dealership and was told no coverage that a rock must have hit it. She showed them where the crack origanated and still no cooperation. It would have been impossible for a rock to hit under the wiper. Into the third year of ownership, more engine light problems. Finally this fall, two months after the warranty is up, the water pump goes bad. Suprising on a car that only has 26,000 miles and is garaged and pretty much babied. Go into the dealer, would not even talk to us. No coverage, end of story. Quote on repair: $730. I about passed out. Called a few shops in town, most would not do it. Was told it is a difficult job on this engine and for the two that would do it th price was about $500. Had it taken care of out of necessity, even the shop manager was surprised that the dealer would not even compramise, considering how well the car was cared for. Final lesson learned: Buying from Mike McGrath will never happen again as the service is the worst around and never lease a car longer than warranty covers. My Nissan Altima with 4X the miles is a much better car. When the lease is up on the Grand Am it will gladly be returned and replaced by a Maxima. I will be hard pressed to ever buy a Pontiac again, at least from this dealership. Similar Products Used: 89 Grand Am, 95 Grand Prix, 95 Nissan Altima |

There is not a better mid-size car on the market. Pontiac did a number by putting a H.O. Quad 4 into such a small car. My motor has a good 195 hp, and has dusted civic Vtech's, 305 camaros, eclipses, and countlesss other 4&6 cylinders. This car tracts great through corners, and has plenty of acceleration, definetly worth the money i paid.
Weakness:
I have to say that the only down side to this car would be that it is somewhat high-maintnence (like my girlfriend). But as long as you change the oil every 3000 miles it will keep kickin' I would have to recommend this car mainly to younger drivers, this is my 4th GA (sold 2 ,totalled 1)--Perfect for 1st time drivers, great combo of speed and safety. Mine help up great in the accident, no complaints at all (thats why I bought this one). Only other downfall-- its VERY hard to find performance parts for this car - I had to build a cold air filter system, and it took 3 months to find a superchip that would work. But it all paid off in the end with my 195 hp HO that runs 14's in the quarter Similar Products Used: 99 alero-alero rides smoother, but GA wins in the handling column, performance is too close too call. |
