Grand AM GT
Strength:
Tight steering, quick accelleration, comfortable ride. The stock stereo
Weakness:
Brakes are a little weak, and the struts could be made better too. Oil pressure is too high. Sender and PCV were replaced but the problem still exists. Water also leaks into the glove box. Oil light comes on when level is full. Overall it's a good reliable car, but I wish some of the more critical parts of the car were made a little better. Ex(brakes, throttle valve cable, and exhaust systems). Good looking, great handling,so far no major repairs needed. I liked the car because a friend of mine had a 95GT(It was later taken from him). It handled really nice and had great pickup. The little things that went wrong were pretty annoying, but overall if you keep up on the mantainance, the car is a good deal. Strength:
Sporty look, quick, girls like it, roomy trunk, good speakers, enough mods for sale to take it to 210 hp. Good handleing, did i mention fast. Moon roof is great.
Weakness:
The 99 models have a few flaws. As do most models that were totally redesined from the older models. The drivers side window might get vertical scratches in it (repaired by manufac warnty), the door on the drivers side leaks water (repair by manufac warnty), my radio got locked and i dont know the unlock code (pain in the butt), you cant manually turn the lights off ( another pain in the butt). I have been fairly pleased with my car. Alot of good points but a few bad. I would recommend this car, but dont by the 99, buy a 2001. The car is fast, fun, and there are a few good mods for it. Similar Products Used: I've owned 84 camaro (muscal car), a 93 lumina z34 (fast car, but the engine is a peice of junk, the car feel apart on me). So this is by far my best car. Would i buy another one, maybe??? I think i might go forign for my next car. |

Grand Am SE Sedan
Strength:
This car is all about strength. Looks, engine, interior, sound, wheels, color. The whole thing is just a strong leader on the road.
Weakness:
Mine didn't come with a sunroof which is a must for the women and is cool to have. Looks like a million bucks. Women like it and often want rides in the car. The car looks sporty, drives sporty and is a real racer. The 3.4L V-6 has great pick up and can take on most any willing car in its class and win. Interior is very, very comfy. Dash looks great and is very conveinient with buttons and such. Similar Products Used: Had a '92 Grand Am. This car is much better. Looks better than the Olds Alero. |

Pontiac Grand Am 4 door sedan
Strength:
Comfortable and roomy perfect if you have to fit a car seat in the back, sound system, and the gas milaege is okay.
Weakness:
The carpet is falling apart and the window will not go up half the time after putting them down. If you dont like change them you might be better off buying a bike. All cars need repairs and this one is not an exeption. This is a great car with many issues. The car is good looking with some definite problems ahead. I replaced the alternator shortly after getting it(got a used one could have been a dud) shortly after that I was purchasing a new one over $100.00. Then I replaced the brake pads and rotors. After that I started experiencing some hesitation when I accelerated, shortly after that the check engine light came on along with the ets light. I thought maybe I got bad gas so I had the fuel injectors flushed out. Unfortunately that was not the problem. After taking it to several different shops and people guessing I finally found the problem, apparently in Pontiac Sunfire, and Grand Ams,years 1995-1997(all with 2.3L,2.4L engine (vins D,T, and RPOs LD2, LD9) this is occuring The relief valve piston may intermittintly become stuck causing high oil pressure. The increased oil pressure may cause the hydraulic valve lifters to raise the valves off of their seats creating a loss of compression and engine misfire or stalling on initial startup. These are the things that I experienced, sputtering and stalling when accelerating, dropping of the rpms while riding at all speeds. If you drive it long enough you may even smell the delicious smell of burning oil. These vehicles may also exibit diagnostic trouble codes PO300,PO301,PO302,PO303 and PO304 indicating engien misfire conditions. Oil pressure at operating temps may exceed 120psi. You will need to replace the oil Pump and gasket. Similar Products Used: N/A |

everything breaks down all the time My very first car, my parents bought it for my used and it had 57,000 miles on it from the previous owner (she had it less then 2 years) Since then I have put on about 20,000 miles. The previous owner never had a problem, but when since i got the car I have had 2 new sets of tires, 2 air compressors, 2 alternator belts, brakes, and just about everything you can think of. My advice great car...but after 50,000 miles sell it for whatever you can get cause total cost have far passed my initial purchasing price. I said i paid 7500, but total almost 13,000....GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!!! Similar Products Used: 1st car and last Pontiac |

Strength:
The drive train is phenomenal. the 3400 v6 could have easily been a pure race beast. the interior is the best part of this car. comfortable, convenient and nice to look at.
Weakness:
Asthetically the exterior design. save for when looking at it from behind at an angle and only with a silver painted coupe does it appeal to ones eyes. but from the sides it oozes gaudy. Trully a tough cheap coupe. with 45k on the odo. I have not had a problem other than routine maintenance which i have neglected. I have beat the crap out of it. and still holds up. in It's gaudiness. pontiac needs to change! thier ribbed design is stale. something fresh and uniqueis needed. Similar Products Used: None |

Grand Am SE1 V6
Strength:
Fast acceleration for a non-V8 (faster than nearly every small sports car on the road), frequently complimented styling, EXTREMELY quiet cabin at all speeds, good stereo.
Weakness:
Brakes squeak with aftermarket pads, center console styling is a bit unrefined, speed governor, can't find any products made to modify the engine (supercharger? air induction kit? exhaust kit?) After reading through some of the reviews posted here, I thought it seemed like a teenager's opinion might be helpful! I've only had the car for about 2 months, but I don't have one major complaint yet....it has 68,000 miles and seems to be holding up well. I've driven many different types of cars at all ends of the spectrum and, in my opinion, there is no better car in the $20,000 (new) price range than a V6 Grand Am. Mine is not a GT but it does have the 3400 V6. I'm not sure why anyone's review would cite power and acceleration as some of this car's weaknesses....I'm not a chronic speeder, but being a 18 years old I have raced a few cars and have never lost. This car has (so far) out accelerated: a Ford Mustang V6, an Acura Integra, a Mazda Mx6, a Pontiac Grand Prix, a Honda Civic, a Honda Accord VTEC V6, and a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The only car that gave decent competition was the 200 horsepower Accord Coupe. For the money, I would say the 3400 V6 is the quickest engine on the road. Similar Products Used: Will outrace nearly all $20,000 sports coupe comptetion (Integra, Eclipse, 240sx, Celica, V6 Mustang etc etc etc). |

Pontiac Grand Am SE
Strength:
Good pick up between 35-75. Looks O.K. without much modification. Quad 4 is really good on gasoline.
Weakness:
Bad acceleration in first gear, low top end speed, braking is slippery at best. The Quad 4 is a good engine with minimal problems, until you have a problem, as it is packed under the hood and impossible to get to if you have to tear it apart. It has a good deal of punch, but performance parts are lacking, as are a wide array of body kits. Not a personalizalbe car. Handling is O.K., however, turning radius is bad, and it doesn't stick to the road well. I've had it aligned twice at my expense, and have gone to using generic tires, as it seems to eat them up. The whole interior rattles and squeaks on a quiet drive, and there is nothing you can do about it. Cup holder under stereo/dash doubles best as an ash tray, and in dash glove box is blocked shut if you have a drink in the dash carrier, forcing you to remove your beverage to get at, let's say, registration and proof of insurance. Governing features stink, as it won't go about 100 mph unless you let it ride for a while. The fog lights are knocked loose often, and I've had to replace them, twice, they just screw mount and are a cheap plug in type, and I only left them there for looks, instead of gaping holes in the front. Car dents easily, if you apply slight pressure to rear quarter panels, they flex disconcertingly. Mirrors make a whistling noise when going about 55-60 mph, annoying the heck out of you. rear deck rattles, with just the replacement 6x9's I put in, no amplifier. All in all, not a solid car, and gets it's butt kicked in the quarter mile by almost any other factory car of that year, and some older. However, it's a good ride for insurance purposes and first time car owners. Oh, and for you youngsters, the raised center console prevents even mild making out. =) Similar Products Used: My first car was an '85 Grand Am, and I loved it. No crappy parts used there. It rattles too, but it is sixteen years old, and not a spot of rust, and it resided in California for most of it's life. It seems to have more power to it, and my tech 4 is bored out, adding another .5 liters of space to the 1.8. Also good on gas, but braking seems to be a bad run with GM. I also tried out the 2001 Grand Prix GTP. Wow. it handles so much better, and the supercharger gives it a nice punch of 240 factory horses. And it's a fair price of around 25k. I think my next car is going to be an import, however. an acura integra, type R. =) |

Strength:
Comfortable, strong frame
Weakness:
I made the mistake of purchasing 2 Pontiac Grand Am's and I must state that neither could be considered reliable or predictable. I have spent approximately $4000 in two years maintaining these cars and still no end in site. Unusual wear on tires, master/slave cylinder on transmission, starter, cadillitic converter, brakes constantly squeak, 'check engine light' on after using air conditioner then goes away, and leaking transmission. Well, according to other reviews you have a 50/50 chance of getting a lemon. Go to Vegas, you might at least feel better after pissing your money away. Support Mechanics, buy a Pontiac |
