Strength:
Only one toyotas reliability
Weakness:
weak 4cyl soft suspension ugly hubcaps uncomfortable seats bad acceleration inadequate brakes pricey for a 4cyl. Have a 2000 camry le 4cyl with 8,ooo miles on it. Not really any good things about it except that its got toyotas bullet-proof reliability. First of all, the 4cyl is not smooth at all, it takes a long time for this thing to get to even 30mph. The suspension is waayyy to soft. And the seats are not comfortable at all. I could get an acura 3.2tl v6 at this price. Similar Products Used: None |

Camry LE
Strength:
Everything works above average to excellent, with one notable exception. Without that problem, this would be a glowing review.
Weakness:
The old bugaboo: SLUDGE. At less than 40K miles, it is now a piece of junk. Toyota adherents and Toyota management can talk all they want about "maintenance" being the problem; but if you look/search the internet for "camry sludge" you get countless hits. Try "honda sludge" and you get one hit for a ''sludge pump'' honda makes. The first thing the dealer/mechanic said when he heard ''smoke from the exhaust'' was "sludge". How did he guess that if it has not been a problem? Maybe its only one out of one thousand engines...but thats too many when its yours; and Toyota won''t even discuss warranty work. It was explained to me that the Toyota V6 does NOT bathe the upper cylinder head in oil, it "MISTS" that area in oil...sure seems like a weak point to me. Just too many occurrences...seem like the old "where there''s smoke there''s fire" bit. Once the sludge is there, its a $1000 job to clean it out, plus whatever else has been ruined. Also, how can an oil byproduct be that abrasive? Maybe they should have used synthetic oil? Overall the Camry has been a very enjoyable car, good space for passengers and luggage; I am not impressed with the extry "luxury" of the Lexus. The V6 has lots of zip, and the car handles conventionally. Fit and finish have been quite good. There is just ONE problem I have had to ruin the experience. Strength:
A lot of get up and go for a 4-cyl. Excellent gas mileage -- 25 in town and 35 on the highway, even with 190,000 miles on it. Comfortable for a small car. Probably the most comfortable driver/passenger front seats I''ve found. I have used this car hard and it has held up. Very little body rust, paint has held up well. Still a nice looking vehicle at 17 years of age. Excellent heat, starts easily in winter. The AC could freeze you out!
Weakness:
Lousy stereo system. Was not good to start and did not hold up well-- now have only one speaker and it goes in and out.The stereo had no power for pulling in stations. Tinny sound to speakers. Trunk opening too narrow. Hard to get stuff in and out of trunk, although roomy once you get the stuff in there. This Camry has been an excellent vehicle! I bought it from my father when his second lease ran out. He knew I needed a reliable vehicle, after owning several lemons. He had no problems with it. I have had only a few, considering the fact that I have 190,000 miles on it. I purchased it with 70,000 miles on it.My family has owned several Camrys, and we all recommend them highly. Good vehicles! None This is the first car I have owned. I have had this car for about 6 months, and all I have needed to do is change the brake pads and rotors. (I waited to long to change the pads) I bought it with about 183,000 miles on it and I have put about 4,000 more on it, and it is still running fine. I would recommend this car to anyone who needs a reliable means of transportation. Similar Products Used: None |

Weakness:
None I don''t own a Camry, but after reading some many unlucks on the sludge issue, I decided to say out. I''m a lubrication engineer and speclizied in lubricating oil technology, including the motor oil. The sludge problem with a car engine, mostly is related to oil oxidation, nitrtion, and build-up of carbon. Rapid oil oxidation is mostly likely a result of too much high engine temperature (poor cooling, etc.), whilst the nitration and carbon buildup are related to incorrect engine design (sorry, not an car engine expert). If your car build so much sludge in such a short time, it''s definetly a engine design defect. Toyota and her dealers should not walk away but take this responsibility. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Runs great after over 135k miles.
Weakness:
The sound system is just ok. Wishes the front seat could go back about another inch. People with long legs have a problem driving this car. Also, seats could be just a bit more comfortable. I have had my Camry for almost 4 years. I between 30,000 and 35,000 miles per year. My car currently has over 135,000 miles. I can honestly say that I have had no issues with the performance of this car. I still runs and looks great. Similar Products Used: Ford Taurus. It does not compare. I rented a Taurus to go on a long trip. The whole trip I kept wishing that I had driven my car. |

XLE V6 4 Door Loaded
Strength:
Nice smooth and reliable ride.
Weakness:
Very minor problems that are corrected with out any questions. Change body design too often and too drastically. Purchased new in 1998. It is loaded with everything. It is a "JT" (Japan) mfg. I am happy the car. It is smooth and powerful yet economical. There is lots of room inside. The oil filter is easy to change. It has 38K miles and the original tires are almost like new. The paint luster is like new. The factory sound system is excellent (for me anyway). The only problems and complaints are as follows: The paint and interior color options were too limited. The front shocks had to be replaced because of noise when turning (atleast they covered it in the warranty). We got one recall notice. They change the body design too soon and too drastically. Thats about it. Similar Products Used: Purchased new Toyota cars in 1976, 1981, 1990, and now 1998. They have given me many wonderful problem free driving miles. |

Strength:
Reliability, refinement, quiet. High safety ratings, both by NHTSA and the European NCAP; as safe or safer than any Volvo.
Weakness:
Rather spongy handling, understeers like mad in even shallow turns, very boring after a while. It is as if Toyota perfected the Chevy Lumina. Beautifully built, comfortable car that will never let you down. Not the most exciting vehicle to drive on the planet but a pretty extraordinary package. If you can find a model that was actually assembled in Japan (ours was), the quality is NOTICEABLY better than the US-assembled versions, both in terms of materials and assembly. I don''t know why this should be so, but I was very struck by this, both at the dealer and when riding in Camrys belonging to friends. Similar Products Used: 1998 BMW 325. Similarly sized car; ten times more interesting but not as practical. |
