Strength:

V6 POWER Stable even at high speeds lots of room in back and front excellent stock sound system (great sound & power) excellent reliability overall a great car

Weakness:

uncomfortable seats suspension a little soft for me, sometimes feel isolated from road. V6 Gas mileage (21 mpg) because it''s an automatic ( I get 28 MPG with my 1997 3.4 litre 4Runner manual!!)

Excellent car. Toyota reliability is definately worth the extra money if you want a long lasting and trouble free car. The V6 provided excellent power, and the car always felt secure. However the suspension is a little soft for my liking. I''ve had this car at 180 km/h (no one on the road in midday) for a while, and the car feels just the same as 100 km/h. Very quiet ride with little/no wind noise. I had no problems with mine in the year that I owned it. Traded it to buy a 1997 Toyota 4Runner (needed to tow boat). I recommend this car for anyone who needs a great reliable car.

My Camry has 89,000 miles. I live in Southern California so I drive a considerable distance to get anywhere. I had one oil leak at 80,000 which was never fixed correctly. I brought my car to a Toyota dealer who told me I needed $2,600 in repairs.I felt I was being taken. I told them there was absolutely no way I would pay that. I am disappointed since everyone tells me these cars last forever. I should consider myself lucky I got so much mileage out of it before there were problems. I will probably purchase a different vehicle in the future.

Strength:

Quiet, smooth, powerful, Lexus-like.

Weakness:

Seat too soft and American car-like. No folding side mirrors.

I didn''t understand why the Camry is the best selling car in US. The previous model was a nightmare to our family. Multiple unrelated functional problems and multiple not at fault accidents have prompted me to sell the car as soon as I had the chance. If it weren''t for my faithful ''95 Corolla I would not have bothered to give the new Camry a try. Now onto the review, the 2002 model is obviously a totally new redesigned model. The design is closer to Lexus with more refined interior. Certainly a major departure from older Japanese style platform. For typical American families, this is probably the perfect sedan to get. It is in fact something that I can live with. Very quiet operation with smooth 195hp engine. You won''t feel that you have reached and is going 90mph. Ergonomics have also been improved. The artistic stereo system now looks completely integrated into the dashboard; a personal plus for me. Overall, even if I prefer Honda''s handling, I''m quite happy with this car. If you don''t care about the plush comfort, you should probably wait until the new 240hp Accord comes out next year. They''ll most likely make it better than the Camry in terms of performance.

Strength:

The car is very reliable and smooth-riding. No major work is expected for still the foreseeable future.

Weakness:

Pick-up can be improved. It needs to be very gradually accelerated which can pose a problem if you''re trying to squeeze in at a high speed lane. It has not been a problem for us, however, although we do not drive in a high traffic city.

The 1995 Toyota Camry LE has been a very reliable car for us. We bought it in 1998 as a previously leased car with 34,000 miles on it. We now have 75,000 miles on it and have not had any major work done on it. We did have to pay >$600 for the 60,000 mile service. Some of the problems we''ve encountered that may not be directly related to the car''s intrinsic integrity have been the following: 1. The power antenna started to rattle and would not completely go down at around 70,000 miles. They replaced the antenna for $55 but found the motor to be also defective but still functional. A replacement would have cost $300 which we refused. The antenna still does not completely go down and a stub portion still sticks out. 2. The Firestone tire on the front passenger side blew out at 68,000 miles that was deemed to be caused by a road hazard. We are going to replace all the tires with non-Firestone tires just for peace of mind.

Weakness:

If there''s a problem, don''t expect you get the service you deserve.

I purchased Camery in 1996 based on consumer reports data. I enjoyed driving it since it''s smoth. Unfortunately, it did not last long. It brought me a lot of problems ever since. At first it had some problems with driver side door and I took it to the dealership. They fixed it. A few months later some leak problem came to the same door serviced and the window would not open. Every time I brought it to dealership for service, something else will go wrong the next time. Most resently, I found out that first thing in the moring when I started the engine, the exhaust pipe gives a lot of smoke which is black. I sent the car to the dealer and they checked it up and said all 16 valve seals are all broken and need to be replaced. This is exactly the same problem that a friend of my had with her Camery. How could all 16 valve seals are all broken at the same time? It''s a quality problem! Any way, since it''s just pass the 50,000 miles, Toyota would not replace it and they asked me to pay for it which is over $1,000. I owned many other cars before and some of them were over 100,000 miles but they never had such problems. My experience with the car and the service is realy disappoiting.

Strength:

Mileage a plus. Excellent on petro. Looks good. I''m 6''2" and It fits great. Did I say mileage. Pre-owned Camry''s are a great assets for the price. Quick for a mid-size.

Weakness:

Scheduled service price, ouch! The electrical system seems to always find fault. The trunk-open light works when it wants to. I hate this about Toyota, (electrical problem w/Tercel too, but I deal with it, all material things have fault). Not as quiet of a ride as a luxury car, but quiet enough for its class. Brand new model prices are too high, better to buy pre-owned, Camry is a faithful car.

I bought a Toyota Tercel in 89.'' It was good to me for 11 years. Now married with kids I needed a bigger Tercel, so I bought a Camry. It has been faithful too. It is silver, kind of sit low in the back giving it that even front to back look, and has tinted windows. The ride is nice, and it quick for a car in it''s class. When I was looking for a car I rented many different, and classes of cars. Out of all the cars I rented, from the top luxury cars to mid-size, the Camry made the most sense to get me from point A, to point B. It''s just an overall smart car.

Strength:

Weakness:

Engine Oil quickly cooks down to jelly (sometimes in less than 7500 miles). Toyota calls it 'Sludge' in an attempt to make the customer look neglegent but it is not the traditional sludge resulting from going 125,000 miles without an oil change; it is still basically clean oil whose viscosity has been changed to that of axle grease. Toyota claims that this wierd phenomena is all the customers fault.

I have a '98 Toyota Camery with 33,000 miles on it. About a month or 2 ago I begin noticing a smoke cloud on start up. I though maybe it was a PCV valve or something. I had had my regular 30,000 mile checkup and the service manager said I had bad sludge and I should have them clean it out for $150. I said OK. Because of the smoke, I asked him to replace the PCV valve. When I picked up the car he told me the sludge was because I was using a paraffin based oil (Pennzoil) and sent me on my way. Now I have just returned from a 1000 mile trip from Tulsa to San Antonio and back I noticed that I was needing one quart of oil every fill-up. I took the car to my dealer who later informed me that my engine was sludged up and probably destroyed. He told me that I OBVIOUSLY had not maintained my engine (no oil changes etc.). After explaining that I HAD done the oil changes, He said he would have the Toyota Rep look at it the following day. I met with the rep who, upon examining the valve area, told me it was negligence on my part that this had occurred. I explained that I HAD done the changes but he said that it didn't make any difference because the EVIDENCE was right in front of us that the oil HAD NOT been changed. Still thinking he might be a fair minded man interesed in getting to the truth of what happened, I said that I thought I could dig through my receipts that I keep for tax purposes and produce the proof of the changes. He said he would not honor the receipts inasmuch as the PROOF OF MY NEGLIGENCE was right in front of us (no matter what the receipts indicated). He played very hard ball; so hard in fact that I became suspicious and went to the internet. In less than 5 minutes I found at least 30 documented cases almost IDENTICAL to mine, both in terms of the mechanical problem and Toyota's stone wall - hard ball response to it. I am guessing that for every case documented on an internet post site there must be 500 that are not posted.

I'm no mechanic but they did explain to me that the engine was designed to run much hotter than other engines, obstensively for emission control purposes. Possibly the oil that would last a very long time in most other engines may be getting baked by the Totota engines.

If Toyota had been a little more forthcoming and candid about a situation that they must have known about, I don't think I would be so irritated. But they kind of treated me like a person who could easily be intimidated and made to feel very guilty about my NEGLIGENCE. I know now that it was not my negligence.

If anybody is considering any legal action, class action or otherwise, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Also....
My tires completely disentegrated (pieces of the the steel belts begin sticking out all over the tires) at 17,000 miles. Jim Norton Toyota said: 'No warranty coverage!' as I had missed ONE scheduled tire rotation (again implying what a negligent person I was). I had to replace them myself at an independent tire store for $390.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Camry LE

Strength:

Before the camry had the first engine replaced, the car had a lot of power and get up and go. This of course went away after the new engine was installed.

Weakness:

The problem with the oil turning to sludge and the fact that Toyota will not back the warranty. There is no course of action for the consumer to prove to Toyota and have them validate their warranty.

We took our Toyota Camry in for service due to the coolant light coming on. I received a quote for $2500 to fix sludge in the engine. The next day I called the dealership and they informed me that the short block (engine) will need to be replaced and the cost would be $5200. Of course I was furious, expecially since this is the second time this has happened. Three years ago the dealership pulled the same thing. Both times the car was under warranty, but that didn't stop the dealership from screwing with me on paying for it. Since I had a receipt from who changed the oil last (one month previously) the first time, which stated "good visual inspection" they had no choice to pay for the engine, which they did after a long fight. The second time (just happened) I didn't have such paperwork since I do my oil changes myself. Needless to say the options from the dealership was a) pay $700.00 and come tow the car and pick up the pieces from what they have done, b) Pay $2500 and they will put the pieces back together, with the car not guaranteed to even run, c) pay $5200 for a new engine or of course d) come talk to a salesman about a new car. With no choice we did and they gave us $3500 on the car (valued over $8000). The car only had 35,000 ish miles on it the first time and 61,000 miles on it now. I thought I had a lemon, but after reading other stories of the same exact thing, there is a problem with some of these camrys. If you have blue smoke or the car is dying be prepared for the dealership to say you neglected your car. Word of advise, get a oil change before you go into the dealership and have them inspect the oil and make a note on the receipt. This will possibly save you $5200 in warranty repair.

Excellent Car...best I have ever owned. I don't know where these other guys come from (the reviews preceding this). I don't know anyone who has had these kind of problems with a Camry (or any other Toyota for that matter).

The car is much more refined and classy than the Ford Taurus. They do not even compare as models...different classes.

I will keep buying Camrys as long as the product is like this.
