Strength:

Smooth is the word here. Smooth ride, smooth engine (for a 4 banger). Very good gas mileage in my opinion, I get 25 mpg average in mixed driving. Haven't had all highway driving yet. Transmission shifts nicely. Quiet overall, some engine noise at higher rpms but well within reason. Some wind noise seems to come from back windows (maybe less door/window sealing in back?) but this may just be more apparent due to less overall noise. Good quality overall. I have had only for about 2500 miles but so far it looks very good.

Air Cond. cools very well, gets downright chilly in recirc mode, I LOVE IT!

Weakness:

Front seats were terrible for my wife and me. I had to go to two different auto upholstery shops before I could finally get the seat lumbar comfort to our satisfaction. We finally had to bolster the back half of the seat cushion bottom and increase lower back support on seat back below lumbar support. ARGHHH! The rear seats still need some bolstering but since they are used much less they will stay that way at least for now.

Even after all the seat fixing I still can't say I love the driving position. I am OK with it for now and I hope after my first really long trip I can still say the same thing.

The steering is light and a little numb. Due to the light steering the car is a little more apt to wander in the lane as you drive. You just have to pay a little more attention to it until you get used to it. The throttle also takes a light touch for my heavy foot. However, since my daughter will be driving the car more in the coming years these may be plusses instead of minusess, I don't know. The brake pedal seems to take more effort than it seems it should at first. Again, once you get used to it the brakes are OK.

The cup holders for the rear seat are a joke. They fold down from the back of the center console and are small and flimsy.

Outside mirrors don't fold, maybe a problem with new driver?

No map/reading lights. No vanity mirror lights. One overhead interior light. Hey, does Toyota have something against interior lights or what?

Only storage in rear seats is the seat back pouch. Oh great, now my girls will be stuffing all their junk into my carefully sculpted seat back.... Really, they should have bins on the doors in back just like they do on the front doors.

The 98 Camry is a very smooth and quiet car even with the 4 cylinder engine. Bought used with 39k miles. I am pleased with this car in virtually all aspects to date. I bought this car as a second vehicle for the family (4 of us) as my oldest will be driving soon and I wanted her to have something easy to drive. I actually preferred the 4 cyl. for that reason although the V6 is an awesome engine. That being said, for us the 4 cylinder is adequate in the power department but don't expect to win any drag races. It is not embarassingly slow though and in fact it normally seems "peppy". Did I mention I get 25 mpg?

I wanted something very average that would "blend in" and this car does that very well (hey, there are a bazillion of them out there!). It is also a nicely styled car for it's family car duties. We have several options on this car that make it "classier" (gold emblem kit, wood trim kit, leather interior, spoiler, two tone paint) and have had a couple folks call it my little "Lexus" due to the similar appearance to the Lexus ES300. OK, I know it's not a Lexus but if you squint....

Overall, this car fits my requirements so well it is almost scary! Easy to drive and park with great quality and reliability. Not a showy standout but a nice classy car that does the job without calling attention to itself. Good safety ratings and it has antilock 4 wheel disc brakes and "lower powered" air bags. I got a great deal on a very nicely equipped used car but there are alot of nice Camrys out there.

I think anyone needing a "light duty" family car would want to check out the Camry. I say light duty as I can't see a family going on vacation in this car. Heck, we can barely get all our stuff in the mini-van! Other than that it should handle anything else you can reasonably throw at it. If you really need alot of power get the V6 but for average duty the 4 banger is fine. Just make sure you are OK with the seat comfort and driving position first!

Note: a friend of mine who has a '97 Honda Accord drove my "new" '98 Camry and announced that he will buy a Camry for his next car because he liked the room and "cushy big car" ride versus the Honda's "sporty small car" ride.

Similar Products Used:

'87 Tempo - the Camry is head and shoulders above the Tempo. The Tempo had an under powered and rough 4 cylinder and was further hindered by a 3 speed automatic. Reliability on the Tempo was so bad it was a joke. I was on a first name basis with the Ford Shop foreman.

'88 Tracer 4 door - Tracer was a good car but the Camry is much nicer, they are really in different leagues. The Tracer also had a 3 speed auto and the engine really boomed at speeds over 60 mph. Quality also didn't quite seem as nice as the Camry but was OK. The Tracer was just too small over time. I really like the size of the Camry.

'91 Mercury Sable - Sable had a nice ride and handling also. Sable had more power due to 3.8L V6 but of course also got worse mileage (about 18-19 around town). The Sable was a bigger car with a bigger trunk (however, the Camry has a fold down rear seat that the Sable didn't). Sable slowly became less reliable and we finally sold it with just under 100,000 mi. Camry seems to be a better quality product but we haven't had it long enough to tell yet. Also, the Camry 4 cyl. engine seems as smooth as the Ford V6!

Strength:

This car is awesome!!! I just bought it two months ago. I bought the LE model with the gallery addition package. The two-toned paint, and chromed wheel (+spoiler[extra package]) in the car makes it look like a Lexus, and it most definately rides like one. The cars stereo system is awesome and the 201 HP 3.0 V6 Engine is excelent. It has an awesome acceleration, and although sometimes the dealers can rip you off with making everything an option, even the CE model in this car is great. Many options make this car an excellent, excellent product.

Weakness:

Sometimes the car makes a clicking noise after long trips, which i dont think is a problem, and sometimes the air-cond. is complicated to use but it is an exceelent car with excellent design.

The camry is reliable, valuable, extremely dependable, and an overall 5star+ car. It combines an awesome engine (V6-dont know about V4) nice styling, and exceelent value into a roomy beautiful car. This is why ever other car is a camry. I reccomend this car to anyone

'01 Honda Accord, and '01 Lexus ES300. The accord is nice but it feels like a piece of tin and cannot even compare to mmy camry. The Lexus is the most beautiful car and although it is the Lexus of Camry it is the nicest car. If i had the money id get that but to get a Lexus feel in a cheaper car, i strongly recomend you get the Camry.

Model Reviewed: , xle, v6

Strength:

* Quick acceleration. (For v6, not sure about the 4 cylinders).
* Extremely reliable. Won't break down or have problems all the time like those poorly engineered American vehicles.
* Just great customer service from the Toyota dealership.
* Interior is very decent, far above my expectation.
* I thought I am driving a Lexus es300 in this particular xle model; very comfortable.
* Very little wind noise, even when I am going 70 mph.
* It's a Toyota. Need I say more!

Weakness:

* The exterior design could be better. It's just not as good looking as the Nissan Maxima or Honda Accord. However, far better looking than any American cars I've seen on the road.
* Fog light is not standard. Why? It's year 2001! W
* It's time to come out a new Camry look, it has been five long years now since this current look was first debut in 1997. People are getting bored.

Just a great great car overall. I don't have to worry about visting the shop on a regular basis like my previously owned car, the Ford Taurus. That freakin Tauras totally drives me crazy. The money I spent fixing the Taurus, I can buy a brand new car. I want to forget about that piece of junk, but I can't. I am so piss. Ford = fools who buy them. I love this Camry. The name itself sounds like a beautiful woman. Very stable on the highways at high speed. Very well equipped in the rain and snow too. I just can't say enough. I know this time around I have made a wise investment. No more "see your mechanic if you want to know what the f**k is wrong with your car". You may not like Japanese people, but you got to love their cars. Great job, Toyota!

Similar Products Used:

* Ford Taurus. Just a piece of crap from Ford. It has no reliability. Always have problem here and there. Look silly from head to toe. People who think this car looks good are totally insane. People who buy this car just don't have better things to spend on their money.
* Volkswagen Passat. The so called car experts and critcs would tell you that this car is better than the Camry. Don't believe them a bit. Just because it's a German car doesn't mean it's always better. For one thing, it's not a BMW. The Passat is okay. Still not as good as the Toyota Camry. Will have problem from time to time. Very expensive to keep up with the maintenance cost for average working people. Is not worthy it even if you are rich. Save yourself a headache.

Model Reviewed: Camry DX V6

Strength:

V6 engine, well engineered. Quiet, few rattles, feels solid.

Weakness:

Owning this car can best be described as "Uneventful." Very little road feel through mushy steering, none through loose handling. Comfortable -- good for long trips -- but not a driver's car. Also, the factory sound system is complete crap -- and there's only so much you can do with 3 1/2 speakers up front.

Paid $3000 for it, 12 yrs old w/ 125k miles. Still a heck of a deal, but it just wasn't as much fun to drive as I'd hoped. The only exciting thing about it was the V6 (which sounds pretty good for being as old as it is), but even that sucks up gas (21 MPG combo city / hwy).

Strength:

Very reliable car.

Weakness:

We had a rattle in the front struts fixed under warranty at 30,000 miles. There was also a short in the front left turn signal which made them blink real fast. My parents have a '98 with the same rattle. I also don't like the rumble noise with hard braking.

We are 100% satisfied. At 32,000 miles we have only had it in the garage once for the strut rattle and signal short which was covered by warranty. The car was expensive but worth it for the peace of mind and reliability it has given us. Also, for my parents, their '98 model has been equally as reliable with about 60,000 miles on it.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Camry LE (4cly)

Strength:

Very reliable car. Drives smooth, fairly roomy, and car radio/cassett good. Mostly, it is a very reliable car. I have about 35K miles on it.

Weakness:

Car bottoms out easily (I hate that). Very boring styling. Power is adequate but lacking. Toyota has cheapened the interior (biggest problem). The seats are hard and uncomfortable. Does not take must effort to leave a mark on any of the plastic dash or cloth seats. We had a front brake problem. They squeeked bad. It took 2 trips to the dealer, but they admitted an engineering problem with the brakes. They said the brake system was unbalanced which allowed more hydraulic pressure to be applied to the front brakes. The dealer installed some equallizing valve and the problem has gone away. The change pocket has broken. The rear cup holder has broken. Cheap interior.

I had a 93 Camry and I was happy with it, so I thought I would do it again on this 97. What a big difference between the 93 & 97. The 93 was so much more comfortable. The years 92-96 are the better Camry years to have. Toyota cheapened the car starting in 97. I have a bad lease on this car. The dealer stuck it to me. Thank God, I have low miles on it to turn it in at the end of the lease. I can't wait!!
Very, very boring car. This is my second Camry and I will buy something else when I turn this in. I am trying to keep my costs (tires, battery, oil, maintance)as low as possible because I am not kepping this car.

Hey there Jeremy, sorry to say but you're wrong in a lot of areas. First off, the Toyota Camry is the number one selling car in America not because of ingenius marketing strategies, not because of mistake, but because this car has intristic qualities that none other can offer. It's many time's been called America's best built car. World class engineering make this car shine like a real gem. It's ride quality and interior sound levels compete against cars costing tens of thousands more. It is quieter than a 2000 Mercedes Benz E Class for goodness sake!! From it's excellently insulated passenger cabin, to it's 0.30G drag cooeficient, to reduce wind noise, this car is well thought out and extremely well engineered. No wonder it was picked "Best Pick" from the Insurance Institute for High way safety. The Accord was rated "Acceptable" While in some areas "poor", such as the foot area where the crash dummy in the Accord had his feet torn apart by the Major footwell intrusion. The Camry? No intrusion whatsoever and the safety cage/structure remained 100% intact and it is HIGHLY rigid. Another safety point the camry has that the accord doesnt is it's Automatic pretensioners to take up slack upon a frontal collision. Also it's safety hood hooks to hold down the hood in case you hit a high truck or SUV, the hood wont come in the window and slice off the passengers heads or puncture the rib cage like in the Accord. The Camry was also the first to offer side impact airbags. For over ten years, the Camry has been proven in reliability, safety, and durability. No wonder it's america's favorite car.

TOYOTA | everyday

Weakness:

Bottoms out.

TOYOTA | there for you everyday

Honda Accord. No comparison - The Camry is in a class of it's own. And if ANY of you have a certain problem such as the car stalled out on you 3 times like one of these guys, that is a very rare occurance, and you should NOT base the Camry on that, because the Camry is officially called the most trouble free car in the world by J.D. & Associates, and many other respected automotive journalists.

Good highway fuel economy, quiet ride, quiet idle, bullet-proof engine, 100,000 problem-free miles, great for long road trips, spacious trunk and interior, hydraulic hood lift, conveniently placed filters, excellent build quality.

Weakness:

4 cylinder engine lacks low end torque, extra 20 lb/ft would be nice, steering on morphine, brake fade, rear drum brakes, excessive braking distance, suspension too soft

This car is so reliable that driving it gives me no worrys at all. Hopefully with routine maintenance it will give me at least another 100,000 trouble-free miles. Get's me from A to B everytime in comfort.
It's just lacking a little power in the engine and has too much in the steering. Has a little too much body roll on turns at speed, ride a little too plush. Worth every penny and some.

Strength:

V6 refinement, little or no road noise. Smooth, comfortable ride. Good gas mileage. Quality is excellent. Car is fun to drive!

Weakness:

Handling is a touch too reponsive at high speeds. Interior puts me to sleep, Volkswagan Passat and Nissan Maxima are eons ahead in their interiors. Stereo is not so great (new vehicles have the JBL).

Very refined automobile for the price! I traded in my Jeep Cherokee (see my other review) for the Camry. I did this because I do all my driving on the highway and I just didn't need a SUV. The Toyota has an unbelievable ride...very similar to Lexus, BMW and other much more expensive cars. I wanted to V6 because of the extra power and refinement. I have not been let down. The automatic transmission is very good. It responds well to how hard I am driving. My only complaints with the car: boring interior, some paint chips on hood (I fixed with touch-up paint), steering is a little too strong at high speeds, and the car stereo could be more powerful. Also, I am not sure about the seats yet. I am tall and I'm not sure they give me the correct support. Overall, great car, especially for what I paid (it only had 20,000 miles on it).
