Strength:

Easy to handle on the road, comfortable seats, great gas milage, very classy look, rides very smooth

Weakness:

Rear View mirrors don't collapse

Overall, I am pleased by this fine vehicle. I have had several friends who have owned this car and none have any complaints. I am single and am always on the go, so spend a lot of time in the car. It is a very comfortable ride and I look forward to really breaking it in. In the recent past I drove a Honda Accord, and was planning on purchasing another until I drove this Camery. I was sold on the first test drive. I truely enjoy the car, plus, I am told, I look great in it too!

Strength:

Very smooth and quiet ride. Nice shifting transmission. Adequate room for 5. Nice quality feel when shutting the doors and trunk. 4 cylinder engine is smooth, decent acceleration when entering a crowded freeway and nice fuel economy. As bland and plain as it looks, you feel like you're driving a superior car amongst other cars on the street. Granite like body structure. Overall a very refined package.

Weakness:

Uneasy feeling that the car is going to bottom over the slighest dip when carrying a full passenger load.

I do recommend this car to anyone. A lot of ignorant people out there look at a Camry and think "nah", and do not know it's strengths. You would not believe how some people think Japanese cars are junk. There are some that are very patriotic, domestic car buyers but at the same will admit these cars are better made than domestic nameplates.

Neither car cannot quite match the refinement of the Camry
Both cars would lose to the Camry the "resale value" competition

Model Reviewed: LE V6

Strength:

Powerful, efficient, prrrfect V6 engine, American Edition pkg. w/burlwood dash, excellent in snow and ice due to traction control/4 wheel disc ABS, std. for '99 is an awesome stereo w/ CD, cass., 6 spkrs., digital controls, excellent accessories from Toyota Performance to dress Camry up. Bought new, currently has 50,000 absolutely care-free miles, "I love what you do for me, Toyota!".

Weakness:

Requires expensive premium fuel(but worth it), "floating" experience over bumps, first year braking "noise", minor instability during sharp turns at higher speeds.

The Camry V6 is a very capable vehicle. It being a toned down version of the Lexus ES300, but sharing chassis and most materials. It's reputation and almost 20 year perfect track record goes to show/prove. There has been seldom seen a vehicle come close to Camry V6's reliability, quality, and integrity values in this class sedan. I think there are definately a few cars out there that could give the Camry CE 4 cylinder a run for it's money. But, again this a a completely different class segment of vehicles. Nonetheless, even entry level Camry has proven itself to lead the pack, in every given category. Lastly, after recently road testing the new flagship sedan from Hyundai, the XG-something, I became aware of one thing. Never leave home without an ample supply of No-Doze, or smelling salts.

Weakness:

Purchased first of latest generation Camry which came out late 1996.

Quality is sub-standard in comparision with past Camry. Cost cutting measure means you get only 1/2 rear bumper, a full wrap rear bumper on all other car make. Be care with rear end, otherwise, it's a $1000 repair job. Yet for any other car it's mere a scratch on the bumper. We have a child car seat in both our 1997 and 1989 (10 yrs old) Camry's. While the child car seat has worn thru the seat farbic in our 1997, there is no mark on seat fabric in our 1989 Camry.

Braking is horrible. Toyota did on service recall on the first new Camry models w/disc brakes and drum models in 1997. The rear drum brakes did not brake enough causing the ABS to come on. Toyota did a quick and dirty fix instead of doing it right. Toyota replaced the rear drum piston with a larger sized piston. Yes, it increases rear braking power; however, it throws off braking modulation. Now it requires more pedal travel to engage the brakes because of increased hydralic volume due to larger rear drum piston. The braking feel vague and difficult to modulate, SCARY during panic stop. Toyota should have also replaced the master cyclinder with a larger one to compensate for the larger drum piston. Now you know why your CAMRY brake horribly. This ft disc/rear drum configuration on the CAMRY is the same on the Sienna. The guy at the dealer tells me that many CAMRY and SIENNA owners are complaining to the dealers. Toyota knows they have a problem but they ignore it. I got so feed up with braking I called the MOTORMAN on radio to complain. Later file a complaint wiht Toyota. Nothing from Toyota. In order to get adequate braking performance, I have to put semi-metallic pads on front, semi-metallic not available for drun, even though the metal pads will wear thru the rotors in 20,000 miles. My family's safety is paramount.

The 2.2 4-cyclinder is a snail. My 1980 Tercel was faster. Why couldn't Toyota put in the 2.4 engine, more power, better driveability, and probably better gas mileage. We only get 21-22 mpg same as the 6 cyclinder Avalon.

Why pay a premium for 1/2 a rear bumper, poor braking, and slow engine!

Strength:

Definitely a great car. My family has had this car for 10 years with over 170,000 miles on it. Still runs great. Never ever has a problem starting on cold mornings during the winter. The ABS has saved me a couple times when I underestimated curves. Has ability to have good pick up when you need it. Did I mention that it is extremely reliable? Well, it is. Also, my parents bought it in 1989 for my mother, then my father drove it, then me, and now my younger brother drives it. The car is going strong even now. Also, because the car is on the heavy side, strong winds don't push it while driving on the highway. I've driven up to 85 mph going long distances. Handling is great. Even the people who does service for the car, they comment on what great condition the car is still in after all those miles. overall, camry truly is a great car, we bought another one, the 98 camry LE.

Weakness:

Actually, I don't really like the exterior of the car, it's not that stylish like a maxima or honda. Also, the Sunroof stopped working after 5 years, but a non functioning sunroof doesn't keep a car from running. Since the car is so old, it eats up a little more gas.

We paid about $18,500 because we got a lot of options with the car. I would definitely recommend the camry to anyone looking for a used or new reliable car, but for those that want it for the looks, the Camry might not be quite up to par. although, the new Camrys are looking quite nice.

Nissan Maxima, the maxima has much more pick up and better handling, but the Maxima is lighter therefore you can feel the wind pushing you when you're driving.

The Camary was great at getting you from point A to point B. Never brokedown or had any problems. The engine had just perfect power to match the weight of the car. Well designed. Pretty good stero system. comfortable seats.

Weakness:

The car was never too exciting. The engine hummed and bored you to death after about 10mins on the highway. The Camary never had the good dashboard design being all flat at all. The power steering was okay but not good for thoughs long ride...OUCH!!! The little pieces fell apart.

Very good family car. You want a vehicle that is reliable and fuel effcient? than I highly recommend you the Camary. If your into the excitement of driving a car, like me, than I highly NOT recommend it. Paid about $20,000

I love the quiet ride. We bought it from Newark, which is about 45 mins. away from where we live. I rode it home with my mom. Very quiet engine, lots of power, good stereo sound, comfortable seating. Really cozy.

Weakness:

So far..NONE!

We got a great deal on this car. We paid 14,000. I would really recommend this car, because you feel safe in it. The engine is quiet. And I can't wait to get my lisence next week and drive it, since it is my car. *smiles*

Power, acceleration, very quite.

Weakness:

The cornering ability is poor. Intirior colors is ugly on the lighter colors.

I'm a 21 year old with a 6 month old baby girl and this car is perfect for my needs. Its very safe for the family, but gets agresive when I'm alone in the car. The car has a really high top end of 133mph.(yes it will do it then the govener kicks in)The car is kinda scary at that speed with "R" rated tires.(but what car isn't scary at that speed) If your young like me and want to add alot of after market products, GO GET AN ACCORD. But I love toyotas to much. And besides TRD makes goodies for it.

Strength:

The reliability claims for this car are reliable! It has a soft ride. Also quiet engine--some friends have tried to start it, not realizing it was already running. Good acceleration on the V6.

Weakness:

Two weaknesses: 1. Cruise control has to be reset if you drop below 30 mph. You can't stop at a light or stop sign and then go back up to 45 mph or so and just press resume. You have to take your eyes off the road and reset. 2. A car of this price and sophistication should have climate control.

I paid $22,000 for my V6 LE. I'm not sorry I bought it. I recommend it highly. It's the right car for people who don't need the hard ride of European sports cars or the exaggerated styling of Chrysler's new lines.
