Model Reviewed: Corolla DX 1.8

Strength:

Liquid-mounted engine is smoooth and quiet
Low end torque scoots the car well
Pretty good stock stereo
Comfortable ride
super transmission
ofcourse...reliable as hell.
good gas mileage too

Weakness:

small Back legroom
no tachometer

This is probably the best of the Japan economy cars. The 1994 DX has better torque curve than all the later so thsi model feels really quick. I estimate 0-60 @ 8.5 seconds, .7 quicker than Civic EX and 1.5 slower than Civic Si. The stereo sounds clear and defined. Engine and transmission sound and feel like a Lexus (well, Lexuses are really a more expensive Toyota with a different badge.) Ofcourse it has good mileage, and I never had to repair anything in my 3 years of ownership. What a good buy. oh yeah, the Tach... according to Edmunds and Cars.com all DX's come with a tachometer. Mine, along with 2 other friends who own a DX, doesn't have a tach. The engine is so quiet I never hear/feel a shift, I want to have a tach to show the engine speed. I guess its around 70 to get a aftermarket tach and installation...oh well. I recommend this car.

* Nice paint job (mine hasn't chipped yet)
* Big trunk

Weakness:

* Positioning of cup holders, you can't use them and have a cell phone plugged in at the same time
* Holes wore completely through tires
* Interior lights are very dim
* No space in back seat, car is even smaller than it looks!!

Paid $10,000

Model Reviewed: Wagon Auto

Strength:

Zippy acceleration, esp for a wagon. 3 baby seat bolts. Easy access, easy parking. EXTREMELY RELIABLE. 410 kms per 35 litres petrol. Reasonable gauge metal on doors. Low repairs. Doesn't leak oil unless in really poor nick.

Weakness:

Seats uncomfortable. Timing chain change every 100,000 kms. Rubbers, seals and bushes deteriorate around 1985/84. So, rear main seal (oil leaks), bushes, steering box boot ($85 + wheel alighment) window bailey channels and door seals all start to perish, Recommend keep it garaged.
Stongly recommend change transmission oil every 6mth or overhaul needed.
Don't be fooled by how zippy it is, if you flog it, it will need suspension and cv joints repaired. If you treat it gently it's will easily do 270,000 kms no trouble.
Also, suggest starter relay. On short 5 min trips the battery power drops & doesn't send enough power to starter motor. Solutions - 1/starter relay (wire battery direct to starter) 2/ tap your coil three times with tyre iron. (it works).
Temp should run at 1/4. My car gradually got hotter prior to cracked head. If it runs hot - don't buy it-its been sadly abused.
Very happy with it. Four years hard work. held it's value. Wished I'd taken it easier!
I'd buy another one in a snap.

Paid A$4,700 in 1995. Resale now at $2,200 to $3,800.00 keeps sale value only if REG maint and Hist kept!!!
Highly recommended. Reliable 4cyl will get up to 210,000 km if hacked and 270,000 if treated gently. Ideal sole parents car, reliable, cheap to service and child/mum friendly. Loved the split rear seats!!!

Strength:

1986 toyota corolla sedan front wheel drive. She still flies over a ten percent grade pass at about 50 mph(The top of the pass is at 8500 feet). I can keep up with all but the biggest V-8s. A very impressive feat, while getting 30+ mpg. The car has 160,000 miles and still purrs.

Weakness:

It only has a side view mirror on the drivers side.

1500 dollars 8 years ago. yes, I highly reccomend this ugly little toyota

Model Reviewed: Corolla LX

Strength:

Saves gas compared to the Taurus because of the smaller engine.

Weakness:

Engine is pretty loud, and too many problems, will never buy Toyota again.

Lots of trouble since I bought the car (June '99). 3 days after I bought it, the airbag light wouldn't stop blinking. The dealer fixed it, and in less than 2 months, it started blinking again. The dealer fixed it again, and in another 3 months, airbag light AND seatbelt light started blinking! Dealer didn't offer an exchange, and they had to took the car apart to fix the problem. Finally, they fixed it, and now the speakers broke! It keeps giving me staticss instead of sounds. The worst car I ever bought, in comparison to '87 Subaru and '92 Ford Taurus. If you are looking for a trouble-free car, don't buy this one.

Also, after I waxed the car, the rear bumper shows a much lighter color (very obvious). The previous car I owned was really old ('92 Ford Taurus, appr. 130,000 miles), and I only fixed it twice. And my mom is still using it.

Strength:

The 5 speed is fun to drive and handles well, feels more powerful than the civic. Great trunk space for Costco trips!

Weakness:

Needs a pull down middle arm rest for the driver.

I bought a 2 year old Corolla LE loaded with a sunroof (which I highly recommend). After searching long and hard, I found it for under $11,000.00.It had 25,000 miles and runs like new! We have a family of 4 and love it for all the little run arounds we have with kids. We also have a gas-hog mini van which is taking up space in the garage. We are thinking about trading it in for another Corolla.
