Strength:

Reliable, easy to maintain, good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Small back seats, vinyl interior gets hot.

Recommended. Got this car new in 1994 and, so far, have had very good luck with it. Tired of polishing the bumpers everytime it rains, but they look bad it I don't. Vinyl interior is still in good condition because windows have been tinted ever since I got it and I polish it every 6 months, no rips or cracks. Interior is also easy to clean. No rattles. Exterior paint has held up alright. Good car to buy used if you can find one that has been well maintained.

RELIABILITY, mpg's,

Weakness:

Vinyl seats (ripped)
no 5th gear for highway travel
and Toyota quit bulding them!!!!!(Must be crazy)

I bought it brand new in 92. I've had no problems with it, just routine work. It's not much to look at, but I couldn't bring myself to sell it or trade it in when I went back to buy my Tacoma last month. I really like this car. My wife and I refer to it as Ol Blue. It's not flashy and it's not fast, but I'd Highly recommend it to anyone looking for inexpensive, RELIABLE transportation.

Good job Toyota!!!

Strength:

Very reliable, quick for a car in its class, amazing gas milage, LS(which I think stands for LOUD SPEAKERS......lol) comes with very clean speakers, too bad only 2 in the whole car.

Weakness:

Power, could use just a little more....... not that I'm not happy with all 93hp it comes with, it wouldn't hurt if it came with a bit more, and could use a 4 gear in the Auto transmission for the highway, revs waaaaaay too high.

This car was my parents but they gave it to me when I started driving. At first I didn't want to get caught dead in it, but after a couple of weeks, it kida grew on me......lol. I didn't waste time, ripped out the factory deck and put in an aftermaket one. And a month later got 2 12" in the trunk in a huge box that barely fit, but the car pounded (135.7dB at competition that I entered a couple of months later) and I kept the factory mids in the doors and that's all I used and ran them off the decks speaker outs. No one could believe how loud and clean those mids were as long as you keep the bass in them reasonably low, we compared them to my friends Boston Rally series and they came close.

Everyone at school loved the car, and talk about a chick magnet, all you need is a Trecel with a system and you'll turn more heads than most sports cars out there........lol. I fit 5 people in the car with some cramming, and sure the car tends to drop a little, but everyone likes the way the car looks even more with 5 people in it cuz it looks so dropped......lol(I still have a couple of pictures......lol). But I never really noticed the shocks bottom out as other people said earlier, it still gave a pretty smooth ride, but a drastic loss in power, but that's not why you're in a trecel anyways, its ride quality......lol.

I drove the car for 4 years before I bought my own Celica, but still have feelings for that Trecel.......lol. But a very reliable car, I'm surprised its still in the mint condition its in after I put the most beat to SH$T 100,000km on that car, that a car will ever see. Its got about 150K on it now, and its still in almost brand new condition, just give it its regular maintenance that any car requires, and you can beat the sh&t out of it all you want and it won't complain a bit, it'll almost cheer you on!!

After reading what that guy did to his 91 Trecel (Quarter mile in 11 sec, that's crazy...... people spend tens of thousands on their cars and can't get them to do that......) I re-condistering letting my parents give that to my brother....... maybe I'll turn it into my project car on the side.......lol

Strength:

Reliable and very easy to maintain. Worry-free. I have 87,000 km on it and have had no major problems. Quite a bit of trunk (and back seat) space for moving things. Ran well and good on gas for long commutes. I also like the size and the relative ease of manouvering in and out of parking spaces.

Weakness:

Can be a little loud - doesn't block out as much external noise when you're driving as some cars do. In about its second year the transmission had a small leak and it was fixed under warranty. I was told this was not an uncommon problem - it was often the same bolt that came loose on each of the ones they'd seen before so it must be a kink from the manufacturing end.

As a first time car buyer, this was a perfect choice for me. Reliable, very easy to maintain, good on gas. Some minor problems include(d): the rubber on the doors came loose, the fast forward and rewind buttons on the tape deck sometimes stick and don't work, the windshield wipers are rusting. However, I would recommend this car to anyone wanting a reliable, good car. I am now however, in the market for something newer and more sporty.

Strength:

my personal race car...well don't laugh cause that engine kicks..er kicked...I'll get to that. Inexpensive to maintenance and repair. Awesome gas mileage. Lots of room up front with dual airbags. The trunk space is great and I pack it to the top. can fit into almost any parking space and can deal with almost every road condition. For the first few years the driving was smooth on the freeways and streets (almost no engine sound and steady wheel). I've had it for almost 6 years now.

Weakness:

Engine just crashed last week. I was a smidge over 80,000 miles. The cost to get a new engine is about 1700bucks. I vote to just get a new car and sell the old one for no less than 2,000. Of course I should have maintenanced my car better in it's last months so that contributed to the engine blowing. Other than that it should have lasted me another 5 years. I'm looking to buy the Mazda Protege 2dr, Ford Focus 2dr, Honda Civic 2dr,or the ugly Toyota Echo 2dr but I've got to test them out first.

For the reasons and stuff above I gave it an equal rating in both the value and the overall rating stars. If I had kept the thing in better shape and hadn't gotten into four accidents (non are my fault by the way), it would be worth $6000 rather than $2000 as of now.

Strength:

This car is great in the snow. Has alot of pep for a small engine. the trunk is huge. Absolutely great on gas , I drive it 30 miles everyday and around town on weekends and a full tank of gas lasts me a week and a half.

Weakness:

The factory stereo stinks ! No rear speakers , the front speakers sound tinny , no bass at all. no air conditioner , only 1 cup holder in an awkward place. If you don't wear your seat belts and have the windows down , they flap like crazy in the wind. The heat takes a while to kick in and then when it's hot you either sweat or freeze if you shut the heat off , theres no inbetween. the car has typical toyota small car windows that fog up all the time. the wind noise when the windows are rolled up is awful.

I love this car , even with all it's little quirks. This car is great on gas and and will take you through snow , ice and mud . it's a fun car to drive and handles pretty good. i hate getting stuck behind slow drivers and when i pass them the car has great pep for such a little car. The car is more fun to drive in the summer/spring/fall months than it is in winter , only because the windows fog bad and the heat will choke you. After a day of shopping and spending money the car holds a ton of stuff .
I am 5' tall and the car is great for short drivers , great all around views. If your taller than 5'8" , you might want to consider another car , unless you like driving with your knees in your face. Overall , this is an excellent car !

Strength:

Bullet proof reliability, great fuel economy, no rattles and quality build.
Pros: Efficiency and reliability.

Weakness:

Could have used an optional, more powerful engine, optional 4 speed automatic.
Con: Not a sportscar.

Owned since brand new, currently logged 150,000 miles. Still runs great! Extremely reliable. Outstanding fit and finish that you would normally expect from a higher, upscale model. Never had a problem other than preventive maintenance. Great car, I would recommend it to anyone.

Strength:

Reliability.

Weakness:

Lack of horse power.

It is been a great little car, I have had it since '92, not much power to it but it's a great economy car to take you from A to B. The mileage is 143k and I haven't done much major work on it, just regular maintenance like tune ups, oil changes etc. I was hopeing they would have continuing manufacturing it but I think the replaced it with Echo, and by reading the ratings I think I would go with Civic or Sentra, Why would I have to pay for power steering as option? Anyways, It's been a great car.

Strength:

It cuts through the snow very well. Haven't had to take it to the shop yet. Very good on gas(thank-gawd), with the prices we pay for gas now. It is a pretty reliable car. It's light enough for my little brother to pick up out of the ditch, rather then me calling a tow-truck. Put some good speakers in the back, it actually sounds pretty good.

Weakness:

You can hear ticking. It's scary when you drive and it's windy out. It dents and scratches VERY easily. In the winter there's ice on the inside of the windows. Back seats are very small. Cannot fit three teenage boys in the back. Can fit three teenage girls in the back. The carpeting on the car look like it was done in haste. You loose change in the top door pockets. It doesn't come with back speakers or a clock.

I recomend it because it is very economical. It's not the prettiest or nicest thing out there, but it is realiable, and that's what I wanted in a car so I bought a Toyota Tercel'99. I just wish I could find a good looking bra...... for my car.

Strength:

At the beginning there were few repairs.

Weakness:

After 6 years the engine was shot, only running on 3 cylinders, was told Toyota changed their engines in 1994, so even if I replaced it, would still be putting in a 93 engine. Very small, cramped, small trunk, low to the ground, fogs up quickly. etc etc

Definitely not a family car, good for 1 person and a dog. What good is a car when the engine is gone? THe body has held up well though, minimal rust.
