Strength:
looks/handling lots of standard features longer warranty
Weakness:
creakes and rattls in cold weather tight back seat room not built in germany My car is still fairly new with under 3k miles but so far has been superb except for a new annoyng creaking sound coming from the passenger door, none of the problems in other disturbing reviews. I actually considerd it a good thing that most negative reviews were about the same thing(coils, windows) which were resolved in '03 and newer models instead of a wide variety of problems. anyway, this car has beautiful styling and grrreat performance! the 1.8T is a good match with a manual trans, also the monsoon sound rocks for a stock system. overall it's a good buy although a bit pricey next to other cars in it's class and I would recommend it to anyone! |

A seductive stance, handsome interior, Bimmer-like ride quality.
Weakness:
Unbelieveable frequency of problem incidence, class-action against VW necessary to ODE TO JETTA Your gleaming emblem symbolizes a storied work-ethic, a jewel-like build quality and a commitment to customer satisfaction because Volkswagen is "The People's Car." Thoughts of Deutschland, but Made in Mexico. Stout, in theory, yet fragile in execution. An odious marriage it hath been, you and me. Fell in love with your Euro lines, but before long, things went wrong with you in so many ways. Slow decay is your "life." Would death come quick, dear wretch, we'd both be spared the protracted agony, but no, you emerge from VW's Castle Wolfenstein again and again, still undead, unfixable. By what manner do you die a thousand times? You are flawed at birth. VW's maquiladora tinkers at the Puebla factory undo Teutonic magic on paper, but don't blame Mexican labor. VW slaps you together like a child's cheap plastic toy. Okay, so you're not "The Ultimate Driving Machine," but should Marx's "The Big Wheel" cost $25,000? Non-functioning heated seats, falling windows and ignition coils that can't be restocked fast enough encapsulate the simple truth: You are a poor excuse for any machine because VW doesn't intend to embody you with mythic ethos. You break down constantly. Daewoo's better than you. Is any VW owner's task too much to ask, that you last? Alas, dear Jetta, you look sweet but due to extreme unreliability I can no longer love you. |

Jetta VR6
Strength:
Sport-car feel, fast, quiet, love the heated seats. Decent trunk space and good sound system. Looks great (really like the indigo gauges) and gets decent gas mileage.
Weakness:
Needs premium gas. Poor warranty (2yrs should have been a sign), and poorer customer service. Certain things are just plain poorly designed (like cup holders and lack of backseat leg room). Seats are not comfortable for long trips. This car has been my primary frustration since we drove it home almost four years ago. The reason we justified buying this car new was to minimize the potential for problems down the road. This car has been nothing but problems but it is somewhat comforting to see that we are not the only one. Sure its fun to drive but the negative things we've experienced far outweigh what little satifisfaction we've received out of this car. The bumper is just high enough to slide over the top of a parking lot curb and hook it when you back up. We've pulled the front bumper off this car a dozen times. What is that oozing crap that below the door jambs anyhow?? We put a hole in the oil pan pulling out of a parking lot so it seems the oil pan hangs down farther than anything else underneath (not a cheap fix and not covered under warranty). Both front windows fell off the track, another common problem with these cars. The AC went out, steering now clunks, rear brake pads had to be replaced (car doesn't have 35K miles on it yet), and the saga continues. Just had the check engine light come on this week so I'm guessing by the problems others have had that it might be time for an O2 sensor. Similar Products Used: Sorry, this is my first VW and last mistake with buying one. |

Strength:
luxury, quiet engine, lots of power and torque, handling, awesome sound system, brakes.
Weakness:
warrenty too short, ignition coils, some component parts sub-standard, poor windshield wiper performance especially in winter, highway wind noise around driver front door, I am virtually astounded at the number of bad reviews of the VW Jetta. Some of the horror stories give me the 'willys' as my car has just come off warrenty. I purchased the 1.8T in June of 2001 and speaking frankly I am generally very pleased with this vehicle. It is a real pleasure to drive, is luxurious and is very quiet. It has lots of power, handles well and looks good. Yes, I have had some problems with this car - probably a few more than I would have expected but all-in-all I still love this car. I hope I can still say this when the lease expires in 2 years. So far I've had to have fixed a) 1 ignition coil blew, b) ASR computer had to be replaced, and c) back brake pads had to be replaced - all under warrenty. I agree that the reliability of some parts and subsystems could be better. I found a surefire way to clean the velour. I have black velour and this is how I do it. 1) Vacuum to remove the big stuff 2) Go over with a lint brush (the roller comes later). This is the brush where you brush in one direction then remove the accumulated lint and stuff by going in the opposite direction. 3) Use a lint roller (the tear-off sheet kind) 4) This is the 'secret' step. Remove a clean lint roller sheet from the roll. Place it on an area to be cleaned and rub the back of the sheet with your fingers onto the fabric and into the crevices. Peel away and voila! - the lint's gone. You may have to do a second time for bad spots. Repeat this process over the entire area to be cleaned. 5) pick out the few embedded pieces by hand that are attached to the velour. Yes you use more lint sheets with a bit more elbow grease but it works - try it. Similar Products Used: Honda, nissan |

Windows, cup holders, back seat, door ooze, and did I mention the windows Lukewarm about the car. I've had SUVs for years before leasing the Jetta (to save a little money on gas). I like the look of the car, it's quick and handles well. There have been a handful of problems. I couple of little pieces broke here and there -- but the dealer fixed them. I've had the window regulator break on the driver's side twice and three times on the passenger side. I don't have kids and don't need a backseat, so the backseat size hasn't been a problem. You cannot have four adults in the car at the same time. The backseat is tiny. My five year old nephew sat in the back and asked me to move my seat up. Also -- there always seems to be a bunch of gewey gunk oozing out of the doors. Not sure why or where it comes from. Lastly, and this is just carelessness on my part really, but the resale on this car is dropping. I think there's just too many of them on the road. I leased for 3 years, I'm 6,000 miles under the lease allowance and I'm going to turn the car back in because buyout is as much as the KBB high for the car. Dealer said I would have a couple of grand in equity, but that just was not true. |

Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Strength:
A beautiful, sporty car.
Weakness:
Quality control too lofty a philosphical goal here. VW settles for less than planned obsolescence. Call it planned negligence with Customer Service non-existent. "Who needs customers?" should be their motto. Too bad, because a lot of lemons means a lot of crying customers feel no recourse but litigation. I visited Roseville Volkswagen 4/6/03 on a sunny Sunday afternoon. After test driving the VR6 GLI in platinum silver, I was convinced that I'd enjoy many more sunny days with this car, but dark days lay ahead. Within two days I noticed the fuel gauge needle dropping like a stone no matter how conservatively I drove. I could drive 100 miles on a half-tank full of gas. Grrrreat! 200 on a full tank. Amazing! The dealer tried to convince me that this is normal. I'm supposed to be convinced now that all cars yield atrocious fuel economy? The window sticker reads, "29 HWY, 21 CITY." I'm gettin' 14, maybe 15 miles per precious gallon while feathering the accelerator. What's up with this car? No one knows (nor does the dealer/ VWOA want to admit that they know) that a problem even exists. I've visited four different "helpful" VW dealers since to correct this and a developing grinding sound emanating from the gearbox in first gear. Yes, I say, GRINDING! Can you hear it, VW? No? Funny... I can. I can read other people's complaints on the net, too. Lots of them. Disproportionately more, I'll bet, than any other manufacturer of ANYTHING! If VW made toasters, my house would have burned down by now. And they wouldn't care. If they wouldn't care enough to build a quality car to begin with, how can we expect VW "Customer Service" to care when the inevitable phone calls from angry suckers come nonstop? When Mr. or Ms unsuspecting customer signs on the dotted line for this car, they must remember that brand new VWs don't show their flaws in the showroom. The cool indigo blue-red dash lights hide the insidious character flaw of VWOA: it has an inherent lack of respect for the consumer as a person who comes in good faith to this company for a quality automobile. VW's bean-counters surely predict the high probability of incidence for such a poorly manufactured and unreliable car. VW knows what it's doing and knows that it can get away with mistreating customers because if customers get fed up and simply return a vehicle "voluntary repossession" is the stigma they wear. Either way, a stain hath been cast on the unlucky VW owner. I guess I'm not lucky. I've been treated like crap by VW since I drove the car off the lot that sunny day. Got yelled at twice by finance underling at dealership-of-purchase when I told him I wasn't happy about the car and was lied to twice by same individual regarding loan and promise for cash-back via incentive. Dirty. Twice refused loaner cars at dealerships when I saw "Niello Volkswagen Loaner" enscribed on back windows. Low. Out of the many Customer Service representatives with whom I spoke, two were actually nice to me and acted like they cared. The rest are humanless programmed Progs, a corporate first line of defense against a horde of disgrunteled customers. The next line of defense is marginalization of the customer when his/her crediblity is called into question. Bring the vehicle in for diagnosis and all service techs are called to fight. "No engine codes thrown" is a phasor designed to neutralize you when service can't give you an honest explantion . Typical. VW wages war against its customers with open hostility. I think VW as an entity is missing the point here: good old customer satisfaction shouldn't have to be fought for. |
