Not only is it adorable, everything is really easy to use and figure out. I feel safe and secure driving my Jetta which is a huge aspect since I just started drivng. The sunroof is killer- I never have it closed. The Monsoon sound system is worth however much extra it is. It's amazing. Another plus is that it takes regular gas, opposed to other cars my parents considered getting me, such as the BMW 3-series and the Lexus IS-300, which only take premium gasoline.
Weakness:
The GLS has 4-cylinder engine which still has alot of speed, but it feels restrained when passing. It can easily handle 70-75 mph, but pushing it further than that when passing can be difficult. When I turned 16, was surprised with a new dark blue jetta. I have been really intrested in cars for as long as i can remember. So naturally, I was estatic when I got a Jetta. It's the perfect car for a new driver. Similar Products Used: The Lexus IS-300 and BMW 3-series, which are more expensive and only take premium gas. |

If you decide to purchase a VW, do not get power windows. My drivers side window has broken three times in three years, and the passenger side just stopped working. Fed up with paying VW $400 a pop to fix them, I decided to take the door apart myself and see what's wrong. There are bare metal cables that raise and lower the window, controlled by a flimsy, plastic guide wheel. How long will it take bare metal cables to destroy tha little plastic wheel? Twelve to twenty months, thats how long. I'm outraged that VW passes the burden of cheap shotty parts onto the consumer. Customer Care was some help, but I can't help feeling I'm on my way to a lengthy, red-tape-laden crusade to save myself $800 worth of repairs that are only going to have to be made again and again. |

looks good, drives well when it does
Weakness:
too many repairs necessary that you wouldn't even think of in other cars of similar price I loved the car when I drove it, has lots of personality...however should have known something is wrong when the original warrunty is only for 2 or 3 years. So far I have replaced Mass Air Flow meter and ignition wire and what not. Which by the way apparently need additional wiring kit because the repair was in 2002 and mine was a 1999 car so I had to pay extra. Now the car is in the shop again for some other ignition problems with the check engine light flickering. So I have spent about $1000 on it so far in addition to normal maintence and brakes etc. If you are buying a car cause you had enough of dealing with repairs on your old clunker don't bother with VW. Most of the mechanics don't have the computer program so you can't go to your local guy, you end up at dealership. Should have gone with the Nissan or Toyota or Honda |

EVERYTHING Don't make the mistake buying a Jetta...or even a VW! This is the worst car I have ever owned and the WORST company to deal with. My car is not even a year old and it has been in the shop 7 times and they time me it is fine! It has a hard upshift that throws passengers forward in the car. So after dealing with VW and the dealership (and drinving around lurching forward for months) I must throw in the towel...loose $$...and get a new car that runs correctly! PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE I DID!!!! |

gas milage could be better. I bought my Jetta over 3 years ago. No problems, except window did not go up on passanger side. It was fixed by the dealership immediately. I found there was a problem with the windows at that point. I had to replace the battery after 3 years. That seemed early. And the back brakes needed replacing after 40,000 miles. A sporty, quick, and decked out car, I can't complain too much. I did just buy a Passat. I hope I don't have problems with coils!!! They say my late 2003 model has been built with all corrections. |

Weakness:
plastic hose How do I start telling you about my car. Well it only borke once because vw used a plastic hose for the oil cooler. Nothing else wrong with the car. I like it very much. I guess because it's got 18 inch rims and I sooped it up. But nothing wrong with the car. Similar Products Used: none |

Jetta GTS 1.8T
This is about a brand new car, so don't look for reliability information in this account. I have plowed through the oft-negative reviews on this web site, and concluded that the two primary issues leading people to downgrade this car have been the coil and power window failures. VW/Audi has officially admitted to these problems and announced their solution (see their web site, press section). The company took a long time to do this, but it did, loud and clear. I guess that if these chronic issues weren't to have happened in the past, all those people who got stranded (coils) and left out in the cold and rain (windows stock open) and repeatedly been held hostage to your typical and ineffective service manager and his mechanic, they would give the car much more favorable ratings - three coil failures and/or four window failures will readily convince one to post a lemon rating on a car. A Jetta owner represents a market segment that demands flawlessly working cheap products: a Toyota with European flare in design and excitement in performance, for a price of a... Toyota. But if you insist on a near-flawless execution in a long-lasting German sports sedan, stop right now and immediately pick up a 325i from your BMW dealer - for about $10 more, if you can afford it. You get what you pay for, and on the whole I give the Jetta a 5-star value rating. I bought the very recent 2003 model (January production), which reportedly has the problems mentioned above addressed. It also has relocated cup holders, which are now in the center console, but one of the cup holders is too shallow to hold anything securely, except for keys and chewing gum. I will be on the lookout for some other commonly reported issues: faulty sensors, rattles and squeaks, panels "peeling off," electricals doing funny things. The reportedly weak paint and a lousy resale value are concerns over the long run. I have read somewhere that some squeaks may go away after a period of time as the seals in doors, etc. "brake-in" properly over time. I also heard that a metallic paint tends to age better, so I went for the attractive Platinum Gray, which in fact has a bluish tint on cloudy days and at night - two colors for a price of one. Some faults in electronic system may be due to such minor things as people not tightening their gas caps properly, which may make the computerized system detect a "fault" in gas tank pressure and consequently light up the engine fault warning light. The Mexican assembly cannot be blamed for many of the nagging issues, as these are due to a bad selection of OEM parts and materials and some design shortfalls. In any event, the combination of officially claimed resolution to major issues, the new 4-year warranty on everything and 5-year on power train, and the 1.9% financing have made me decide on the purchase. And, of course, the fact that this well designed and tastefully finished car is a blast to drive. My 5-speed 1.8T has the following options: leather, sport suspension/17" alloys, EPS, and upgraded Monsoon stereo - in other words, a loaded GTS, and that includes power everything, a sophisticated alarm, and 8 airbags in a crash-proven cage. These make the basic Jetta into a car with a German sport-luxury feel for under $23K. In value, the car is comparable to the new Mini Cooper S: retro styling, Go-cart handling, and Getrag-made tranny of the Cooper are matched by a better ride and higher level of practicality in Jetta with a German-made power plant. Everything works very well, though some squeaks can be heard here and there in the panels. Engine is mellow ("civilized") below 2K RPM, at which point the turbo noticeably kicks in and pulls strong across 3K. The car will climb moderate hills in 5th at 50 mph without any effort, and there is enough power left to accelerate in these conditions. Once in the twisties and hills, the smiles come on as the RPM builds up and the car eats the curves at any speed you have the guts for. The feel of the small, thick steering wheel is great, and the big, legible guages usefully complement the energetic ride both during the day with with black on white scheme and at night with attractive red on indigo. A bit more lateral support in the front seats would be nice. Also, the long travel of the clutch pedal makes seat adjustment somewhat problematic with too little distance resulting to the gas pedal. The telescoping steering wheel helps to get it is right when it comes to you upper torso. Adjustable lumbar support is nice, but raising the seat also tilts it forward, making this adjustment a bit of a compromise. The seats are on a firm side, which is ergonomically correct thing to do, keeping you from slouching. Once on the freeway, the ride is surprisingly quiet and smooth, but in a German way, with suspension still providing feedback, engine humming away, and 80 mph feeling like 50. The stereo fidelity is very good. All in all, a great car for long trips, wild blasts in the mo |

EVERYTHING> above mentioned Hmm.. where to start... The guy who sold me this garbage machine(i refuse to call it a car) is clearly glad he got it off of his hands. two days after i got it the transmission went and it also needed a new clutch. The dealer repeatedly told me that the clutch was excellent. Anyways, numerous other things have broken in the 4 months that i have claimed ownership to this poor excuse for an automobile. i have lost tons of money on this crap machine and highly regret ever thinging vw's are excellent cars. The features in side the car are outdated and flimsy, and things break that the average person never even heard of. DONT BUY> Similar Products Used: Nissan Altima 93, great car |
