Strength:
looks, price
Weakness:
none, yet Afer reading these terrible reviews, it appears that if you live in a cold environment, you're screwed (what's up with these coils). Also if you have the turbo you may have problems. I got the 2.0 and I live in CA. No problems.....yet. |

Strength:
good looks, nice engine, plenty of safety features, very nice interior
Weakness:
everything else, bad reliabilty, car love to spend most of the time at the dealership than on my driveway This was my first experience with VW and I hope its the last one too, when I was shopping for a small car, a co-worker suggested to go look at the new Jetta's, and we did, the car styling is very appealing, very nice interior, a lot of saftey features and not to mention the 1.8T, the engine is very powerfull and smooth for a 4 cylinder, so I bought one. 2 weeks later started hearing noise from the driver door, so I took it to the dealer, ok I will make this story short, I still have the same noise after 20 month and plenty of lubing the door seals, the dealer pretty much just said live with it. I also had strange wind noise from the passenger door, the seal was defective, a month later had a problem with the brakes and the dealer replaced the front brake discs, then had a problem with the battery in cold weather, then the heater stopped working, strange sound from the fan, noise from the rear doors. This car spent soo much time at the dealers, and the dealers service was soo bad, after reading reports on this board I checked to see if mine was made in Mexico and sure enough it is. The warrenty is only 24 month or 24000 miles, I will never buy or own any VW product again, there is a serious reliablity issue with those cars, I think I will go back to the reliable Japanese cars. |

Terrible road conditions don't even fizz on this car. It is a reliable, durable, great on fuel car that anyone would appreciate owning.
Weakness:
Absolutely None!!! I purchased my car about a year ago and this is my second Jetta. After reading the reviews posted I thought I better let you all in on a secret, maybe there is a difference between the US and Canadian Jetta. Because this is my second Jetta and the are the BEST on the market. I live in a climate with -40 Celcius plus winds and my car is a more than reliable. I have driven on the worst road conditions imaginable and still my Jetta has passed with flying colors. It is a wonderful class act to a society of mostly SUV's up here and as of lately I see More and More volkswagen vehicles in our country. |

Looks cute sitting in the driveway where it can't cause any trouble.
Weakness:
3 year old car does not pass state inspection due to carbon monoxide emissons 10 times legal limit. I absolutely loved this car for the first 2 months that I had it. Then, the check engine and brake lights came on and bells started going off in the car as I was driving. The check engine light has now been on almost constantly for 3years, car freaks out in any amount of snow, side window fell got stuck in the down position during a rainstorm, rear tail light to burns out every few months, I have had apprx. 10 oxygen sensors replaced and VW customer service is a joke b/c they have no control over the dealerships service depts. |

Strength:
When the car is not moving (apparently anything else over stresses it). Ability to deplete your financial savings by constantly breaking down.
Weakness:
Too many to list. VW's inability or intentional disregard to stand behind its product. VW's total disregard for the importance of keeping their customers happy. Don't buy this car or any VWs for that matter. I bought the car new in 1999. The warranty is horrible so I bought an extended warranty package through the VW dealership which VW will only honor occassionally. Since I bought the car I've had the following problems: (1) the driver side window collapsed into the door frame unexpectedly, (2) I noticed a weird noise coming from my AC unit, I took the car to the service dept to get checked - they couldn't find anything wrong - two weeks later my AC compressor was lying in my driveway, (3) my brake calipers froze in place with only $47,301 miles on the car causing extensive brake damage which cost me over $700 to repair (with the extended warranty). In all I spent over $1,500 on repairs while I still had the extended warranty. I've had horrible experiences with the VW service departments. I've had even worse experiences with VW's customer service department. I filed a complaint regarding the Capital Cities dealership in Glenmont, NY. I followed up later to find out what the result of my complaint was and the customer service dept told me they don't release their decision. Ultimately you will never find out if the dealership was acting in accordance or violation of VW's policies. For the money you could buy a much better and more reliable car. If you decide to buy a VW don't waste your money on an extended warranty package. As far as I'm concerned VW will never get another dime from me. They have lost me as a customer forever!!! They have their dealerships to thank for it. Better customer service would have resolved my complaints. |

Jetta 1.8Turbo
Strength:
* Long list of standard features * 1.8 Turbo fun to drive (when it's not in for service) * Good handling * Sharp styling
Weakness:
* Call VW of America and see if they care that the dealer's service department does not respond to phone calls (the Livonia VW dealer's sevice department is TERRIBLE). VW just doesn't care. As consumers, we should stop caring about buying their products. I would rather drive a bland-looking (but well built) Honda Accord than this piece of crap. DON'T BUY VW!!! Strike 2 against VW. My first Jetta (2001 GLS VR6) went back to VW after I filed a Lemon Law complaint. I should have known better but I figured I would give them another try. While the 2002 1.8 Turbo is fun to drive, the engine coil issue and VW service are severe weaknesses. VW is not handling this issue (faulty engine coils) well, they claim it is not a safety issue. WHAT? When you're on the highway driving 75mph and one of the coils fails, it becomes a safety issue. A near-death experience has taught me to never buy VW again. Don't be fooled by the car's good lucks, long list of standard featuers and affordability, the car is a lemon. VW should go back to manufacturing this model in Germany, the Mexican manufactured cars are lemons. Electrical systems problems, the now-famous engine coil problem (I realize this is the fault of the supplier, but working in the auto industry I also realize VW should have more than 1 supplier for this part, kind of like putting all of your eggs in 1 basket), and assorted other issues (make sure you know your radio lock code!) make owning this car a nightmare. "Drivers wanted"? How about a new slogan for VW, "Quality cars wanted!!!" Similar Products Used: Honda Prelude Jeep Grand Cherokee |

Strength:
Great looking car. Even looks stylish on the flatbed getting towed to the dealer.
Weakness:
Known issue with the vehicle, which VW USA or local dealers would not fix. This was my first VW purchase based on a friends reccomendation. The car really impressed in the begining. Black on Black leather interior, sunroof, Monsoon SOund, 17 inch wheels. I felt this car looked awesome. Unfortunately, 11 months after purchase, first coil pack went. Within another 5 months, second coil pack went bad. The first time this happend, I thought it was a fluke. After the second one went, I started to do some research. If you would like to know how massive this problem is, just check out some of the VW fan sites on the web. Their discussion forums are all over this. Both the dealler and VW USA were only willing to replace the defective parts. In other words, I was driving around with three coil packs in my vehicle with known issues, and nobody could care less. The response I finally got from my dealer was that if I get stranded for the third time, they will find a way to replace all bad coils. This was completely unacceptable. I made repeated calls to local dealer and VW USA. I have so many VW incident numbers it is not even funny. They tell you the same thing. "At this time we are only fixing defective coils" . They also sent a letter that said the car could still be driven on 3 cylinders on "Reduced Power". I am no mechanic, but if you could hear the car and smell the catalytic converter, you could pretty much figure out it is not doing the car any favours. Definately a safety issue for my family driving late at night or going on long trips. This car is getting traded. |

Looks Good!
Weakness:
Looks can be deceiving! I am at the point where I don't want to drive it anymore, I don't feel safe! Just tonight the second of my four engine coils blew. This is absolutely pissing me off. I fell in love with the car the moment I saw it, it was my first brand new vehicle. One year and a few months have gone by, and I am ready to turn it in. Customer Service was horrible and the VW roadside assistance towed my car to the wrong dealership. My service dept. was excellent. Though I didn't get a Neon, as many others did, I got a Galant... I am not sure how much better that is. I am just frustrated and wish a recall would happen. I would like to see for all the engine coils replaced with better functioning ones. It is an unsafe matter, especially in the New England weather. Other problems: velour seats are horrible! |

Great reliability, club cab interior is awesome. Durable, rugged, a great truck. Easy for self maintenance. not too big, not too small.
Weakness:
The paint is peeling a bit on the roof- a typical problem for these trucks. I've had this truck since 1995 and it has over 150K miles on it. I am amazed at how well it runs. I couldn't be happier with the reliability. Besides routine work, I've replaced the radiator, a few sensors, the thermostat, ball joints, and fuel pump. Not bad for a ten-year-old vehicle. That dash! Radio, turbo, cargo room, turbo, heated seats and side mirror defrosters. Oh, and the turbo. When running well, there is nothing like it for fun and handling. I remember those days.
Weakness:
Mechanically challenged. Make sure you have AAA towing if you buy this car. Cup holder placement is just STUPID STUPID STUPID, and black, lint attracting seats are annoying. Still trying to figure out purpose for an outlet in the trunk. I must admit that I fell in love with this car at the test drive. Go Turbo. By that first night with the view of the red and blue dash I was totally smitten. But, I'm getting scared to drive it. First the transmission in the wipers went funky causing the drivers side wiper to go way off the window and onto the support bar. Under warranty. Then the shift indicator went wierd showing I was driving in neutual and reverse was neutral. Who knows what driving gear I was actually in. This was LOTS of fun for the weekend. Under warranty. Then the most fun was the ignition coils that went on a freeway onramp causing the car to shake like a cheap hotel bed with magic fingers, complete with loss of power and a flashing dash light. But, my dealer was only able to replace 2 of the 4 and gave me a warning that the other 2 could go anytime. Thanks guys. VW America customer service was much less than helpful. So I bought an 85 Subaru wagon for $700 to make sure when I go skiing this winter I can actually get back home. What a waste, 15K miles and it has had so much stuff go wrong. Such a beautiful car, great standard features but mechanically unreliable. I must say though that my dealer has been great through all of this and always has my car clean, fixed right, and ready to go when stated. But,if I see them many more times I think I have to invite them to my wedding, I don't see some of my relatives this much.
