Strength:
Looks good and handles well for a small car.
Weakness:
This car breaks down constantly! I've never spent so much money on the same thing over and over again. Parts are extremely expensive. Volkswagen Service Dept. not helpful at all. Spark plug wires replaced twice - $150 each time. The repair shop I took it to said they were shocked to find out how much these wires cost and couldn't understand why they had gone bad after only 1 year. Called Volkswagen where the parts were purchased. They said "someone is probably pulling on the spark plugs". What?! What kind of explanation is that? The ignition and door locks had to be replaced. Smoke started coming out of my steering wheel. This car has a lot of problems but they're always weird problems and everytime I have something repaired it's around $500 because again, the parts are so expensive. When I buy my next car, it'll be a Toyota or a Honda or even a Chevy. ANYTHING is better than VW. I bought this car thinking I was getting a great car for the money but ended up with too many repair bills. |

Strength:
a nice smooth drive.
Weakness:
repairs make this car cost a small fortune. The wipers are really bad too. It's fun to drive, but breaks down quite a bit. My VW has only 30K, but the drivers side window has broken twice, the battery died, and the coolant pump had a leak. One things I have noticed that i did not see mentioned in other reviews is how low to the ground the Jetta is. When you park in a parking space with a cement rectangle at the end of the space, the front bumper/spoiler tends to catch the cement block (because you are so low to the ground). Then when you back up, it rips it off. I had it happen twice to me when backing out of a parking space. And you don't know it till it is too late. A repair man I went to says he sees 3 Jettas a day with this problem. |

LOOKS LOOKS LOOKS (including the lint magnet velour), steering, handling, awesome turning radius, even better passing power, TURBO, monsoon sound system (that thing CRANKS), entire dash setup (& the way it all glows at night),60/40 split folding rear seats - good option to have, as if the trunk itself isnt big enough...must i go on?
Weakness:
premium gas - oh well, i'll get over it...oh wait, i already am the turn signals that blink on the dash are yellow and it clashes with the blue and red...sad that this is all i can come up with, isnt it? ok so i'll be a conformist and say the rear seats are cramped, but hey, when me and my friends are cruisin', i sure dont hear them complainin'! (and im not sittin' back there, so what do i care??) ;) i guess that means its not really a weakness, right? INCREDIBLE car...180 hp in a 4 cylinder? cant beat that. and the sound of the engine when im floorin' it...yeah im sure some old people probably dont like it, but i LOVE IT!!! im soooo dying to see what the car can REALLY do - heard that the car performs at its finest above speeds of 80-90 (yeah, the germans like to taunt us dumb americans with the fact that we dont have an autobahn), but its not exactly safe cruisin' speed around here... ive been watching the gas gauge and odometer very closely to see how im doin on gas - not terrible. just drive the turbo and you'll see that its all worth it. i get nothing but compliments on the car - its in alaska green, the rarest color it comes in, and the car is pretty much loaded, tint and all, but minus the leather (who cares, i dont need it) and the cold weather package (again, who cares) oh and no sport suspension (shall i repeat myself again?) although i wouldnt mind the 17" rims... buying premium gas kinda sucks, but hey, this car is freakin gorgeous AND funner than heck to drive. the materials used are really upscale lookin', definitely worth it...i know its not an audi, but who cares!! im not in a midlife crisis YET... & german engineering is the same all around (at least thats what i tell myself)...im just hoping i dont experience the same horrible problems everyone else does. so far, so good! the window problem is fixed on the 03's, so im thankful for that, and it seems as though most people's problems showed up in the first month - well i've got a couple weeks left...pray for me Similar Products Used: nothing compares...i've never driven a turbo before, and will never stop driving one now... |

All of the problems, near death expiriences... I have had a few problems with the car. I got the car in Nov. of 2001 as a birthday present. In July of the following year i moved to Chicago to go to college. In september of that year, i was driving down the road thankfully only doing 25 mph... the back let wheel locked up causing my car to spin. Scariest expirience of my life, i had just gotten of the crowded express way going about 75-80 mph. If it would have happened 10 minutes earlieri would have died. VW claimed that they could find nothing wrong with the car. Then just yesterday i was on my way back from indiana from visiting some friends at IU, and i ran into some transmission problems leaving me stranded in the middle on indiana. I would be in 5th gear, and if i pushed the gas down more than like an inch the RPM's would shoot up like the car was in neutral and the speed would no increase. I came to find out that this was the same for all gears. I called a tow truck and he wanted to charge me 150 dollars to get it towed to a dealership near my house. So i got it towed to the nearest dealership in sounthern indiana, he still charged me money for it, but it wasnt 150 dollars. I am calling today to figure out what the deal is, and i really hope for the sake of the person on the phone that they deliver cars :) and that the repairs are covered under warranty. None. I purchased a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. I have had it for four months and I have no problems with it. Prior to this purchase I had 1997 Volkswagen Jetta that lasted me five years and never had any trouble. If a car is taken care of inside and out, there should be no problems. SE MY SUMMARY... ALSO ,THIS IS A HIGH PRICE FOR A SMALL CAR OF THIS QUALITY WINDOW MECHANISMS, CUPHOLDERS, ASHTRAYS, AND BRAKES SUMMARIZE THE PROBLEMS. I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY DAUGHTER TO HAVE SAFE, RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION AT COLLEGE AND AS A REWARD FOR HER SCHOLARSHIPS. SO FAR A QUESTIONABLE DECISION. |
