Weakness:
not reliable. Too much problem, dealership not efficient. Always has to leave car for the whole day and only do oil change on Saturday. Too bad I did not read the review before I bought my Jetta in 2000. Me too had wanted to own a VW for a long time, and this is going to be the last one for me and everybody around me. Yes, the car is unreliable, by 94 corolla is better. For the last month, I had to bring my car to the dealer 3 times, engine light on (oxigen sensor), replace engine temperature. This time they need to replace the air bag, the dealer was very generous to offer to do it free, but I have to pay for the diagnose. On top of everything, the car has very poor gas milage, it only goes to 400 to 450 km for tank. Similar Products Used: My 94 corolla is much better. |

Strength:
Nice body style. Nice interior
Weakness:
Service, Warranty, Manufacturing of vehicle. When I bought my car I was very excited because although I always liked the Jetta there was something about the body style that didn't influence me to buy one. Then they came out with the new model and I had to have one. But I have to say that I have been really dissappointed with the car. In the 3years that I have owned it the following has gone wrong. Cup holders broke (3x's); door lock mechanism broke; tires had a recall on them, but I was never informed by the manufacturer or the dealer; sunroof broke; cd player broke; gears slipping, sometimes can't get out of 3rd gear. I'm sure there are other things that I can't remember, but most of these things happened after my 2/yr warranty was up and I was told that these things were usual wear and tear. I've owned several cars before and since my purchase of the Jetta and never have I had so many problems. Also the dealership was not very helpful and couldn't sympathize with my ordeals. My husband says that it's a lemon, but I know that since my purchase Volkswagen has increased their warranties to a standard 4 years. Go figure!!! |

1.8T Jetta GLS Wagon
Strength:
Materials, car "feels" more expensive than others in it's class. Rear cargo space is huge for a compact wagon.
Weakness:
Don't put anyone tall in the rear seat, they won't like you very much. Cargo room is excellent, turbo is very responsive. Handling is good and the little VW extras in the car are fabulous. I have heard of the spark coils failing, bad parts from a supplier to VW. Hoping mine won't go but if they do VW has road-side assistance to come and get me. 1.8 liter V.W. Jetta
Strength:
Nice, fast, responsive car! Good cargo space. Good dash layout. Good stereo.
Weakness:
Reliability(see above). Roomy for four people. Tight fit for five.In-dash cup holder location could spill liquids into console. Nice car to drive, but has reliability problems. Owned the car for 4 months, then two of the four 'spark coils' died. Took it to the dealer, who fixed the two broken ones, no charge. I asked why they didn't replace the four spark coils since two were already dead. His reply was that the dealers are only allowed to replace coils that have actually cracked since the replacement coils are in such demand that they are scarce. Volkswagon's policy? Folks, it's the middle of winter, and now I have to worry about when the other two spark coils are going to die. Nice policy. He told me that V.W has had alot of problems with these coils on the 1.8 tourbo engine. He said he wouldn't doubt that there will be a re-call for this problem. Hope so! Strength:
I had the v6 and it was a very fast car.
Weakness:
service, service, service. interior is pretty but falls apart expensive to own I had notice I say had a 99 Jetta. It was a problem from the start. The car looked great and it was a really fast car but beyond that I cant say anything good. The worst part is the service they are idiots. It is very expensive to repair and believe me if you buy one you will find that out very soon. Even under warranty they dont take good care of you. I dont know what is going on at Volkswagon but they are losing what good reputation they had when I wanted to buy one. |

not much, turbo is fast but what turbo isn't.
Weakness:
quality To the consumer, Beware of the quality of VW. We have had our car for 1 month before problems starting arising and the dealership is built with monkeys working in it. They give us all kinds of answers that make absolutley no sense and make more excuses up for every question. I am not sure what they really do with the cars in the service department but fixing them is not it. The major problem with our jetta is the ABS/ASR which is faulty and can lock up all four wheels. It is has been in the shop 3 times and for more then 30 days now. They offered us a new jetta which in CT you have the right to decline and go thru the lemon law program for our money back. Twice now the dealership has given us the car back with a problem even the manual says is very severe because of the risk of injury. This is just not safe. |

Strength:
MMMMMmmmmm. Well it does have a couple. The Body does seem tight along with the interior. And the looks, especially w/ the 17" wheels. And when the Turbo spools up it is a joy to hear (when the car is running).Cold weather package, sweet.
Weakness:
Leather Seats could be more hugging like the GLI's....Hint, hint VW? Less body role even with the sport package, this could be my preference though. As for the rest don't get me started..... O.K. Where shall I start. You hope to buy a new car and only vistit the dealer for routine maintenence right, ex.oil changes, inspection etc..right? Well i have been to mine one shy of a dozen times in the year that i owned it. To name a few probs, Radio shut off not to come back on, Driver side window button faulted, Hesitation? dealer said bad gas...mmmm Not. Still does it on occassion, Gas button in door fell into door--sucked because i needed gas in a bad way, And the later is the biggest pain. The day after the one year Anniversary the darn Ignition Coil(s)went rendering the car a vegetable. And yes the parts are nowheres to be found. I tell you this I will get through this B/S but i will not be a repeat customer if VW does not improve it quality & dependability. I speak with references as many of my friends and family own similar VW's in the recent years and are experiancing various problems. I want my Acura back...Never, I repeat Never had isues. VW fix this damm car..And O-yeah, I better not get a freakin Neon for a rental as the car was just picked up and did not get down there to follow up yet. Strength:
A million bells and whistles that most cars in this class don't have looks good great audio system sunroof easy to use tilting AND telescoping steering wheel Headroom
Weakness:
Engine noise Small glove compartment Roof top antenna can get in the way of some roof racks So Far, this is a great car. As far as the other reviews go, I know nothing of any problems that the previous owner had been through. performance wise, the Standard 2.0 liter I4 is adequate, but i would appreciate the 1.8 T version. It handles well, and the ABS works very well. The engine makes a little more noise at highway speeds than similar cars (mazda protege, honda civic). The seats are very comfy, and I love the dial for the sunroof. The monsoon sound system is great, and the heated seats work well. with 32000 miles on it, it is still in great condition. The back seat won't fit a tall person, but that's not a big deal. But I wish the glove compartment was bigger, it can't even fit the owner's manual. from my experience, i'd recommend the jetta, but seeing the other reviews, i'd be careful. I was looking for a small car, and this was one of the few i fit into (6'2"), and it had the best features etc. for my price range. Strength:
fast, Great power, awesome seats, six speed transmission, did I mention that it was fast.
Weakness:
All of the above is great when it is not in the shop. This ignition coil problem should be handled alot better by VW USA. Instead, just tell everyone that the parts are on back order. Also, this $25 a day restriction for rental cars is down right rediculous. $25 a day couldn't get me a Yugo. Thanks VW, for nothing. Hmmm. How shall I start. Loved the car when I first saw it and drove it. Fast, handles great, sports seats, six speed. But them I brought it home. With less than 6000 miles, it is in the shop for a second time. First, my radio would turn itself on and off with warning, even when the car was shut off and parked, in the middle of the night, whenever it wanted. Then the dreaded ignition coils. Well, it has been two weeks and I am still getting the run around. The dealer that my car is at is terrible. Crowley VW in Plainville has done nothing but jerk me around the whole time. Don't ever bring your car there for service. I am ready to just tell them to keep the freaking thing. It does me no good sitting on their lot waiting for parts that are back ordered. And don't even suggest that they go with after market parts. That conversation got me nowhere in a hurry. Drivers wanted. Drivers Beware!!!!!!
