defective ignition coils, high gas consumption. My new 2003 Jetta GLI has less than 4,000 miles on it and it's been in the shop twice for an ignition coil failure. My car supposedly has six coils and the service dept states that they can't replace all my coils unless they're all defective so I can potentially come back four more times? I'm driving a stinkin' neon right now and i'm paying for a jetta. who knows how long they're going to have my car? sounds like i got a lemon. |

Ignition Coils burn out for no apparent reason . Ok, before I get into this, the dealership has been wonderfull ... doing their best... Now... The car is a lemmon. After 7 mos and 11k mi ... and the first real cold spell here in the Northeast, the ignition coils went... told I will have to wait basically until the second comming to get it back because the parts are on backorder, so I am paying for a jetta while driving a loaner car (a neon... ) that I barely fit in. VW should RECALL THIS PIG ... you could DIE driving this car if the coil goes while on a highway or otherwise driving fast. I was lucky, some were not |

POWER!!! looks, handeling, and that 6 SPEED!!!
Weakness:
so far minor things...arm rest can't b down when shifting, some little peices falling off here and there (foam peice under hood, opened back door and some lil' round plug thing fell out ect...)needs more adjustable seats (the seats in my 300ZX are awesome) I have been so stoked with this car...and now after reading these reviews i'm like worried. I love this car!! the 200hp V6 has so much power and it has pick up in all 6 gears...it looks awesome with the 17 inch wheels and handles very well...but i can't believe all these problems people are having with a "new" car...this totally sucks!! well, as for now i'm loving everything about my jetta...some minor things bother me (seats arent as adjustable as i'd like...my black paint has a little bit more "orange peel" than it should...theres a thread exposed in the stitching of the leather in the back seat(probly could b a prob in the future) Similar Products Used: first VW...i've only had Nissan Z cars...i really really hope VW is paying attention to some of these complaints/comments on here...i think its ridiculous to have to fix these window regulators so man |

Look, power, so far reliable after 8 months, heated mirrors and seats.
Weakness:
cupholder, velour seats, struts and mass air flow valve Very nice car, but had minor problems, not as bad as some that I have read. Mass air flow valve, struts. It is terrible in the snow and the cupholder is ridiculous. It has good power and tons of fun to drive. I still look forward to driving everytime I get in.The black velour sucks cuz you can see ever speck of dirt that hits the seayt. Similar Products Used: Jeep Wrangler Mazda 626 |

Won't start. Leaks. Doesn't handle well around turns. etc. etc. I now refer to it as the lemon. I consider those who haven't had problems with the car lucky. I have had the car in 3 times for the same problem... the car rattles and shakes and shuts off from a cold start. I have to start the car 3 times to get it to go! Plus it rains inside my car... any bit of rain at all and the windows leak. I am getting terrible gas mileage, 18 miles/gallon of premium gas... wow.. bad. I wish that I had seen these other reviews before I had bought it what a lemon. Car only has $12,000kms on it how long until it completely falls apart I wonder? Similar Products Used: None. All I can say is I liked my 95 chev cav better than this junk. |

Strength:
Fun to drive?
Weakness:
Electrical system, fuel system, oil consumption. This car is a piece of junk. I've never owned a car with so many problems. Since I've owned the car it has had two recalls and numerous electrical and fuel problems. Here's the short list: mass airflow sensor, fuel flow sensor, moonroof problems, rear defroster, gauge illumination, burns approximately a quart of oil/1000 miles, and a constant check engine light problem that still is undiagnosed. |

Great on gas for a 6 cylinder, looks great. Very sporty
Weakness:
Cup holders, leak onto the face of the stereo (hey guys, drinks do sweat) Unreliablitlty, who needs to worry about when their NEW car is going to break! Overall I love the car, I have 30,000 miles so far. I bought it used with 6,000 miles. I have already replaced the window regulator 4 times, 2 each side. The Sun roof broke and when they replaced it the new part had a broken piece also. So far no charge. I had the entire transmission replaced at 20,000 miles n/c (factory recall) The check engine light has come on twice now. The first time was due to a clogged air filter. The second time, which is right now, they cannot figure out the problem. My car has been at the VW dealer for 4 days and the mechanics are still scratching their heads. Similar Products Used: I drove a 1991 Honda Civic with NO problems, just basic maintenance. Sold it with 185,000 miles and it is still runnning! HMMMM |

Well made and delivers what is offered with some nice pluses. Reliable, sturdy and good looking. Chick car my ass!!
Weakness:
The downsides are small back seat area(too bad!!), doorlocks that pinch your arms(Jetta owner's know this), drinks gas in city traffic, makes weird noises that per my brother the "mechanic" says are inexplicable. Glove box should be redone not good for nosy passengers(girlfriend broke door). This car was a repo that my finance guy told me was a steal at $10,500.I agreed when I saw the car and I knew I would be driving it away. Repo's are risky so I was skeptical but it looked AWESOME!! This car was in pristine shape other than the center console was broken and a few minor stains in the upholstery and no ashtray. There was a baby seat in the back when they brought it in which was a good sign. Can you believe they repo'd the car with the baby seat in it? Where is the love? The car had only 33,000 miles(still under manufacturer's warranty and great for a 1999!!) and looked garage kept with alloy rims and the most slick darkest blue color. I thought it was black at first which everyone knows is cool but I must say the midnight blue looks better. I had my cd player installed the next day after buying and I was in shock at how crisp and loud (if need be!!) the speaker arrangement was.It sound better than most luxury cars. So far after almost a year I've only had to replace the slide for the sunroof $65 and my body guy upgraded the console, glove box and cup holders with the 2002 styles as part of residuals from a fender bender claim. I am this car's worst enemy and I am pretty good at maintaining vehichles. I think that VW is solid at what they do. I live in Chicago and we get exteme heat and cold(no warming up just take off!!). This car handles well in snow and rain and for an automatic is very quick and can move out when urged. I had 1983 Jetta back in the day and it was a gem. Similar Products Used: 1983 VW Jetta - well made and VW still does an outstanding job at making sensible but attractive models. |

Strength:
Fuel economy, ergonomics, the ride, stereo, sun roof, large trunk, safety, maneuverability and comfort. The dealership where I purchased the vehicle has excellent service!
Weakness:
Grinding sound in steering wheel, expensive brake job, EXPENSIVE timing belt, the door moldings have peeled off TWICE, the sun roof rattles, battery went out TOO fast, the emergency brake is peeling, the stereo controls have a short in them (when you adjust the volume sometimes you get a sudden BURST of sound), the rear seatbelts don't retract properly...causing holes in the rear door panels, the emission control module went out ($300.00!!!!..MY expense), the mass air flow sensor went out($800.00 luckily under warranty), the front reflector fell off. hummm I think that is all....isn't that enough? I have always wanted a VW and for the most part I love my car BUT.....the maintenance on it is costing me a fortune. What I save on fuel economy I spend on minor repairs and maintenance. The ride is good, the ergonomics of the car are great and the value is great as long as you have an endless supply of cash to pour into it. I have started referring to the car as "the money pit". And I would have to say that if I had to buy a car over again I would NOT buy my Jetta TDI. I would opt for a Japanese car or perhaps another GM. But for now I will continue to dump cash into the "pit". As I only have about 9 months until it is paid off! I am in it too far to quit now! Similar Products Used: We have always been "GM People" but I wanted to try a VW....sad to say the costs associated with keeping that car have been more than I have spent on ALL of the cars I have had combined! |

-cool looks -good for what you pay -good handling -nice hp
Weakness:
Interior peeling, delayed gear changing, faulty mass air flow sensor, hassle from the dealers telling me the engine issues are in my head, and a little bit of a rattle at speeds over 80mph. Overall I love my Jetta!! But I do have to say that I agree with some of the other reviews. I have had similar problems with mine. I have about 25k on the car now and have also had to replace my mass air flow sensor. The center console is beginning to peel, delayed gear shifting from Reverse to Drive, and the damn thing has a mind of it's own. If I don't drive it the same way every time then the gears begin to shift hard and jerk the car. Though the dealer tells me this is normal. Similar Products Used: none |
