Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Looks, quality of material, Turbo, stock radio, all bells & whistles.

Weakness:

Bad assembly quality in Mexico. I hope the ones built in Germany are better (The PASSAT)

Ok here we go. The good news first. I purchased (leased) this car after having driven Japanese brands for over 18 years. I wanted a small car but a bit more upscale than your usual Civic, Corolla, Protege etc. I also have a 2000 626 LX-V6 for my wife which is an excellent big car and trouble free. Back to the Jetta. The car is fast. I bought the Auto because I got tired of the manual, since I drive most of the time in traffic. The Auto is good but if you want FAST you buy the manual. Material wise, the car is #1. No one else can match the interior of the VW for the price. It has all the bells and whistles. Mine is full load minus the leather. I dont find the seats led magnets like everyone is saying. If you keep your car clean it does not pose a great problem. Another thing I find puzzling is the cap holders. Granted they are positioned at a place where they block the radio controls. So what? They only thing you cannot do is change the CD. You can up/down the volume, change tracks etc. I mean if you have to change the CD every second song you have a serious problem. The back seat? No problem there either. You buy a Jetta for the german engineering and driving experience. Occasionaly you take some passengers/kids for a ride. No one said this is a Buick! Now the bad news. The car from day one had a rattle at the front doors, both front doors. Seven days later, I took it to the dealer for repairs...yes it was quiet for 2 days then they started again. Second time I went in for all four (!) doors as they back ones developed the noice. On top of that my horn stopped working. Two weeks later (last week) I took the car in again. This time they kept it for 4 days!!!. Yes, 4 days to repair teh rattle at the doors. Well, guess what! It still rattles. I am getting seriously pissed. I talked to the salesman and the service manager. They have no clue why it does that. Well, my opinion is that VW has a quality control problem at its assembly line in Mexico. The car is not put together very well. I just finished talking to them again. I hope my dealer does something about this...like give me another car, because VW has lost a client and his family/friends for good.

Gas mileage Very Attractive

Weakness:

Snot on Door panel Bad windows Indicator lights are sensitive Expensive Up keep Seat cranks are difficult to move Very little back seat room

I purchased this car in late August, At first it was love at first sight but a week later the window fell into the door, about 2 weeks after that, my engine light came on and my oxygen hose went bad...the engine light wouldn't go off and I got a lot of unnecessary repairs for a fickle light. Last month I had to get the brakes fixed because 1 brake pad was worn metal to metal...Breaks are supposed to wear out in pairs but not on my car. My car is the execption but I guess you get what you pay for. I've got leather interior, power, heated seats, and a 6 CD changer. The Broker didn't even know that the car had a CD player in it. Overall I think I'll finish paying for this car and go back to an Accord. The gas mileage is great but it doesn't compare to the expenses for the car...What's up with the snot on the bottom of the door panels?

Handling, powerful engine, great gas mileage, large trunck

Weakness:

Cup Holders, interior trim starting to peel

I love my Jetta TDI, 5 speed!! This is the first VW, import vehicle or diesel I have owned and I love it. I did extensive research before buying and I have not been disappointed. Yes, service costs a little more but I knew this before I purchased and with the TDI you only change the oil every 10,000 miles and no spark plugs etc. I also had nightmare experiences with my dealership, Byers Imports-(DO NOT BUY FROM BYERS, THEY ARE DISHONEST AND HORRIBLE-found they were not performing the "free" service that I had taken it in for!!!! just a little bit unethical) so I went to another- MIDWESTERN AUTO GROUP and they are GREAT. They have convenient hours, even Saturday and seem to very good. I currently have 75,000 miles on the car (I drive 25,00-30,00 miles a year) and the gas mileage is wonderful. I have not experienced the window problems but rec'd a letter last week from VW and they are now fixing this problem for free and have extened the coverage on this for 7 years. They will also reimburse if you have already covered this expense yourself! I do not like the cup holders but as for the backseat, did it shrink after you purchased the car? They are not marketing this car as a family sedan built for all the kids and the dog, so pick an appropriate vehicle for your needs!! I am hoping to be one of the lucky VW owners who are bragging about having 300,000 miles on the original engine! I did have problems, cupping, with the original GoodYear Tires but Good year covered this under warranty (even though I just replaced the second set that did the exact same thing) No more Good Year Tires! Unfortunately, it sounds like the car is not as much of a problem as the dealership. Maybe VW should check this out and hold them accountable! Forget what you have read and buy the Jetta but buy the TDI, 5 speed.

Strength:

Engine power Incredibly strong brakes Quiet, comfortable ride Styling Interior look and feel

Weakness:

Not many besides the reliability problems mentioned above. Two small drawbacks are the cramped back seat and awkward cup holders, but I was aware of both problems when I bought the car. They are nuisances more than weaknesses.

I fell in love with the Jetta 1.8T the moment I drove it. It was a complete breath of fresh air after my test drive in an Accord LX. It was flat out better in terms of styling, interior look and feel, and raw power. It is so much fun to drive that I still look for excuses to go driving after six months. On the other hand, I have already experienced many of the same problems that other Jetta owners are reporting: - passenger window broke at 1,200 miles; - coolant pump broke at 3,500 miles; - passenger visor light bulb burned out and EPC light came on at 5,000 miles. I don't care what anyone here says about this sort of thing being part of the VW "personality," it shouldn't happen on a new not-so-cheap car. Exactly how long will it take VW to figure out the window problem? At this point I have more confidence in my 1991 Honda CRX Si than my brand new Jetta. How screwed up is that? Bottom line: The car kicks atch and is a ball to drive, but it has reliability issues. If they continue, I'll dump the car and crawl back to Honda on my hands and knees. But I sure hope it doesn't come to that, because it is sooooo much fun to drive.

Power and quality of construction

The 2001 Jetta GLS is attractively designed. However, one quickly learns that German engineering is not manufactured in Mexico. It would seem that my car, much like many other purchasers, suffers the same types of problems. The engine fuel relay pump has now failed twice in eight months. The front passenger window has repeatedly bounced back when automatically closing. I don't know how many times they have tried unsuccessfully to fix this problem. Given that my warranty will expire in a few months I am understandably concerned regarding future repair costs. Would not encourage others to buy this car. Fit and finish are substandard.

cheap interior, poor reliability

I have had this car for 9 months now. It looks like a nice car and its pretty quick for a 4cyl. I have all the extras, all of them. The car has a great safety rating but there are a lot of prolems. The first week that I had it, it began ot overheat. There was a leak in the Coolant hose. Took them over a week to fix. The interior is very cheap, door handles chip, console broke, the vents on the sides do not have much air that comes through. The monsoon system that I paid $300 extra for is horrible, no bass and it vibrates badly. There is some sort of slime that leaks from the door jams when its hot and it looks nasty. The seat knobs are horrible and not convenient. The sunroof gets stuck, the auto windows stop working if u go over a bump. The cup holders block the cd player. The back seat is cramped. The bumper pulls off when its parked in a spot that has a cement block because the car is so low to the ground. I am not a happy customer and will not be buying another Jetta. They look great on the outside and the inside. but after a while things fall apart in mine and i am not happy with this automobile.

EMISSIONS

When I purchased my VW Jetta I was in heaven...Ijust loved the looks and the way it drove. I did have some problems with it (mainly recalls on the emissions). However, I never in a million years thought that it would save my life in a serious auto accident. The safety on the VW Jetta's are amazing and I am living proof. I had the car for two and a half years and on my way home from work on a Friday evening I had a seizure behind the wheel. I was on a busy four lane highway when my foot hit the gas pedal due to the seizure and it sent me down the highway at 90mph. I was passed out the entire time, however, I hit a dirt burm and it lauched the Jetta 45FT into the air. The air bags deployed instantly (saving me). I cleared the lights at a Lincoln dealership and my Jetta dove into 4 parked cars. You should have seen the JETTA.... it was amazing how the car impacted. The officer at the accident scene said that whatever kind of car I drove saved my life. I walked out with some injuries...but I am alive to tell the story! And you can count on me buying another VW. The safety is real. I KNOW!
