Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

it is cheap on gas

Weakness:

for a brand new car - it seems rather unstable

I purchased a Tdi to save on Gas. The car was great for the first two weeks. After this problems arose. First the main seal went, causing a major oil leak - this was fixed n/c. Following this the transmission went, VW chose not to cover this costing me $1,500. Then the front end ball joints showed play. Once fixed, the muffler fell off - once again I had to repair. Next the cooling system began to leak - after $4,000 the leak was found. the starter broke down and was replaced - no charge. Next the timing belt broke - resulting in major engine damage - which i paid $5,000 to repair. Next the air conditioning system needed to be replaced, and an entire electrical re-wiring was required for safety reasons. now the car is in the shop - as rust has eaten through the bottom, it looks like they forgot the rust protection in the plant. Also the car tends to bolt to the left when the brades are applied.

Strength:

- Fairly fast - Good mpg - Monsoon sound is awesome - Great Euoropeon Styling - Great hp for a 4 cyl if you have 1.8t - Dash is awesome at night - Lots of features for the money

Weakness:

- Needs auto lights - Stock wheels are ugly gotta pay extra for nice ones. - The base model with 90hp need I say more. Pay for the extra hp. - AC vent has a little vibration unless you close the vents. - My insurance is expensive

I have the 1.8T GLS w/ all options with 180hp not mentioned on this site. It is a great overall car. It handles very well. Has tight steering. A cool looking blue dash at night. It accerlerates fairly quickly but revs the rpm very quickly also. I have the autostick and if you try to race and use the autostick you wont be able to shift as quickly as you should. The autostick is a great product however I find I have no real use for it. I got the velour but I should have gone with leather because I get lint from the seats on my suits. I reccomend getting the monsoon sound. It is better then alot of after market systems you could buy. The larger wheels with low profile tires and the moonroof those futures I use and enjoy daily. The keys are really cool if you havent seen them yet. I am satisfied with the product but I think their are better cars on the market in the same price range.

Strength:

Styling, power, performance, features, powertrain warranty, dealership, awsome bang for the buck.

Weakness:

Transmission replaced at 25000 miles, some interior finishes wear too easily, velour seating.

I love my car! Power, handling, styling are incredible however at 25000 miles the transmission had to be replaced without warning (it stopped moving in the middle of an intersection). Park Cities VW in Dallas performed the repair work. They broke the shifter when replacing the tranny, so after returning 3 times they finally resolved the problem. So far so good. The interior surfaces look great, but they don't seem to hold up too well (scratches, peeling, breaking). The velour seating attracts too much lint that is impossible to get off. Next time I'm getting leather. I would recommend this car to anyone, and I do plan on buying another in the future.

I purchased this car 2 weeks ago, and I have yet to drive it. The car only has 47,000 km (30,000 miles). It seems that the wiper motor on this car is on it's last gasp. It will turn one complete cycle very slowly, with the push of a hand. (Yeah, I can just see myself driving with my hand out the window in rain). With the rainy/snowy days we have here, I can not afford to risk driving the car in it's current condition. I'm mechanically inclined, and tried to fix it myself, however, I'm having a hard time removing the wiper arms, as they seem seized. A VW specialist (not dealer) informed me that it is a common problem on new VW's. The car was also missing the antenna mast when I bought it. Dealer wanted $60 CDN for it. I managed to find a used one for $20. I've owned many cars before, and never had major repairs done. I do take care of them, and maintain them regularly. Reading all the posts here is starting to scare me, knowing how expensive VW parts are. The two most "popular" problems here seem to be the window regulators and mass air flow sensor. If any of these occur in the next 6 months - time for me to part with the car.

Strength:

It's real easy to be clipping down a crooked raod in the rain at night running hard through the corners and look down to see the speedometer at 70 on a in the middle of a 40 MPH turn. Smooth close ratio tranny. Gauges are real cool but can be hard to read due to the color, bluish purple with red needles would ya believe.

Weakness:

ESP sometimes cuts power when shifting hard from first to second, even without wheelspin. Cupholder, neat contraption, lousy location.

Very solid and predictable in the worst driving conditions at speed. Rain makes no impression on this car with those meaty Michelin Pilots on it. The boost in power to 200 HP didn't hurt nor did the additional of the six speed tranny. The Monsoon 200 watt system is great as is the interior comfort. The ride is better than my 2001 Maxima SE and the performance is better as well. It's very nice to sit on those warm leather seats on a cold day. The ABS saved my tail on the first day on a run up Mt. Baker in the rain. It's not a good idea to enter an unmarked 15 MPH hairpin at 50 MPH but the ABS, the performance pkg. and those tires saved my bacon for sure. It's quick and way too much fun.

Engine problems, interior attracts every piece of lint in the world!! Amplifier does not work. Glove compartment staying together!

OK car. Have had the check engine light come on a few times and almost stalled with no power! Some of the interior is peeling off. The speakers in the back have got to be the worst ones I've ever heard... problem is you can't! and I bought the Optional monsoon package with amplifier... can't figure out if the amplier is even working. The glove compartment is completely off the hinges!

-1.8t power is incredible -handles like a german car should -Great looks inside and out -5-speed is solid and easy to drive -Really cool turbo whistle -Favorite car I have ever owned

Weakness:

Don't put anything but 93 in the tank, my girlfiend put 91 in and I could really feel a power loss <2000 RPM.

I know i have only had my Jetta for a few weeks but I am in love. I got an all black one with the sport package(17" rims and upgraded suspension.) The car handles great. 1st gear is a little touchy and has tons of torque steer so I wait till 2nd to punch it and wow does it feel nice. Got it as a second car for zipping around town.

Exterior very nice, the inside is very pretty with the neon blue and red lights.

Weakness:

transmmition has gone out 3x since I bought it 8 mos ago, window regulators are bad, my windows have fallin 3x already, my fuel pump went out after only 3 mos of purchase and my turbo is not working properly, I have no power in my 180 horse power jetta. My sunroof has stopped working tice. Volkswagon America has not been very helpful, and it is hard to get across to any one. My advice to any one is DON'T EVER BY A VOLKSWAGON!

The car is beautiful in the exterior, but the engine is horrible. The power is there and it drives very smooth. You think it is a goregouse car, until you buy one!

Strength:

This car looks great and gets lots of compliments. It drives reasonably well for a small car and has a great trunk. Interior controls are well positioned and feel good.

Weakness:

The 2.0 litre GLS is a little underpowered, and the transmission is slow to shift when cold. The interior is nicely finished but has a few rattles and squeaks. Finally, it's quite difficult to fit a baby seat in the rear and still have enought driving room up front.

Purchasing this car was one huge headache - got the runaround from the dealer. Generally this car has been good, however, the two year bumper to bumper warranty is a little scary.
