Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Model Reviewed: VW Jetta VR6

Strength:

The interior and exterior was built very well. The vr6 is very quick and underrated, and the stock stereo is one of the best around.

Weakness:

The mechanical aspects not solely designed by VW, i.e. window regulators...where manufactured very poorly. The stock suspension is a tad bit to soft for my liking, and the headlights suck unless they are on high beams or if you have enough money to buy the oem hids!

So far the car is awesome. I have had some problems with my window regulators, O2 sensors, MAF, and my ac. That sounds like a lot, but hey its a VW. The car is so much fun to drive especially since I now have an after-market suspension and I have the throaty vr6, which is very fast!

Similar Products Used:

I drove a 97 VW Golf and they both handle almost indentical when driven stock. The vr6 weighs more and that is noticeble in the turns.

Strength:

Looks, Powerful turbo is nice on such a smalll light car, handles well for the price.

Weakness:

Constant problems ( electrical, mechanical ) Poor motor drives on windows break 2x in 3 years, sensors fail, rattles appear and don't disappear, interior light sometimes work othertimes don't. Paint scratches and nicks if you look at it wrong.

Look deeper than the exterior if you are interested in the VW Jetta. If you don't care to get to know your service dealer on a 1st name basis, Don't buy this car !! Why is it that all dealers have 2-3 week waiting periods for repairs- are they that busy fixing these things !! These things should be sold with a complimentary roll of duct tape !!

Strength:

Comfortable if not being driven aggressively...then it gets very noisy.

Weakness:

Build quality is terrible, Electric windows broke five times...so far, centre console is falling to pieces. rattles from all over the cabin, VW won't find or fix any rattles. Surface peeling off some interior surfaces. Black front valance under bumper made of brittle plastic, nudged one pavement and it split right up the middle, Cheap...I repeat, cheap. Sunroof doesn't seal properly. Servicing is expensive, parts even more expensive. Dealer will try to rip you off if you don't check everything they are doing. MY colleague has a Golf of the same year and has had the same problems and judging by the reviews here so far...so has everybody else. These are not one coincidences. This a build quality issue, cars are built very, very badly. I could understand if it was just the Mexican cars but the German's as well. There were more problems but I can't remember all of them at the moment.

Nice quiet, comfortable drive. Unfortunately that is the only good thing I can come up with. I bought this car because of good old fashioned German engineering, what a mistake!!. My car was actually produced in Germany but has the same problem as the Mexican made cars. The electric windows have broken continually, front driver 2 times, front passenger 3 times. This last time the window lasted for two openings - it was in the garage one week before for the same problem on the same door. Volkswagen just dismiss it as a warranty item, yeah, but I will end up paying $150 to fix every two months or so now the warranty has run out. Do not buy just because it's a VW, these cars will be remembered as a complete lemon by most of it's owners, I hope VW takes notice and doesn't come up with second rate garbage like this in the future. Did they think we wouldn't notice if they got lax once in a while?

Strength:

The fact that it's got a stock turbo gave me a lot to work with. The way that it sounds when I drive my car gives me goose bumps. People don't expect that much power to come out of Jetta, but little do they know!!!

Weakness:

My ONE and ONLY complaint about my car is this; when I let the clutch out and I'm sitting in idle, you can hear the clutch ratteling. I have a friend with a 2001 VW GTI 1.8T and his does the same thing. But other than that, there is nothing that I can complain about.

This is the best car that I have ever owned!!! I'vve done some after market work to it, so that just adds to the quality of my car. I drove 1994 VW Golf before I bought my Jetta, and that car can't even compare to the one I have now. I love the Blue Lagoon color, mainly b/c I don't see too many other Jettas in that same color.

Strength:

Good handling at high speeds. Body seems solid.

Weakness:

Noisy. Electrics and electronics not good. Dealer is arrogant and not customer friendly. German quality is a myth. The car is made in Mexico.

Worst car I have ever owned. Passenger door will not open when temp is below 30F. Been to the dealer to have it fixed 3 times - still inoperative when cold. Three window regulators replaced before 30k miles. Some windows only operated 10 times. Radio will not tune AM or FM. Power locks have had to be worked on 3 times for the same problem. Dealer refused to cover repair to lock to same door under warranty because the lock problem was "different" each time. Power windows have failed. Battery replaced after 24 months. Radio went into "safe mode" had to pay the service manager $5 (cash only) which he pocketed to look up the unlock code. Have made service appointments with the dealer which they canceled after having the car for an entire day - and then I had to wait another week to get it in. Exterior trim stips falling off all doors on both sides of car. Bad, bad automobile.

Strength:

Moving the gear shifts is fluid and fun. Backseat is more spacious than one would think from looking at it.

Weakness:

Worst cup holder I've ever seen. I'm bummed that I got the CD changer in the trunk. (I never change the CD's) - but that's my fault, not the car's. The anti-lock breaks have gotten me into trouble a few times.

Great little, sporty car. Easy to move around in. Very reliable. I take very good care of it, but I've had no problems after 2 1/2 years. Volkswagen has been a dream to deal with.

great seats, nice styleing for an 85. good gas mileage. quick great handling

Weakness:

didn't come stock with AC. They don't make them like they used to

This has got to be one of the best VW's I've ever driven, I wish the new ones were built like this one. It felt light and fast. This thing drove and handled like a dream. You could take this thing out on a curvy road back road along the oregon coast and you wouldn't want to take your foot off the gas. The 5 speed manual has got to be the best ever, the clucth action and feel wasn't jerky at all and the shift feel was positive. The 1.8 liter 8 valve put up with numerous red lines and never once tried to show me that I wasn't the boss. unfortunatley with all good cars they will have to die some day but not after over 200 thousand miles of fast fun.

Strength:

Reliable, comfortable, black leather seats, cold weather package(heated seats), moonroof/sunroof, standard transmission, very large capacity trunk, 4cyl engine - saves on gas and I don't drive at excessive speeds, full size spare tire, michelin tires, alloy rims (rear brake dust needs to be cleaned often with a rim brush).

Weakness:

Small leg room for rear passengers, you sweat more on leather seats - use covers during warm/hot seasons, vent fan could be a little bit stronger on lower speeds, radio, climate, and cup holder console could be a little higher (too close to shift).

12/2000, I received the car new. 1/2002, the car was checked for the O2 sensor recall, result was negative. 2/2002, the internal radio antenna was replaced (static on radio stations). 6/2002, the passenger window regulator needed to be replaced. A thick wire coat hanger was used to bring the window up while pressing up on the electric window control and then taped up to prevent it from going down prior to being fixed. I have traveled cross country with it with a heavy load and put on 4K miles. There has been no engine problems or any safety issues. Today, the car has 25000 miles and is in excellent condition.
