Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Solid, beautiful, fast, classy. Very big trunk for a small car. Seats fold down for extra storage. The windows will all go down at once by turning the key in the driver's door Great for cooling off the inside on a hot day.

Weakness:

Darn cup holders, you would think that the germans would have heard of the 44oz'er. Worse in our Beetle though. Not much leg room in the back seat. PS Check gas cap if your engine light comes on. Many pressurized systems will kick on the light if the cap is not tight. I click mine three times to tighten

My first Jetta. I love it! It's beautiful, sleek, powerful, and fuel efficent. I have the sport package with leather, heated seats and more. It was a great comprimise for my first 4-door with auto trans (for the wife). The trans has two shift modes so we both win. I will update later.

Acceleration styling handling seat comfort Monsoon sound

Weakness:

Door creaks, wind noises at 90mph, clear coat peels, pinstriping peels

I've had my car for about a month now. Overall, the looks are worth the minor inconveniences I've had to fix. The trunk lock had to be replaced 2 weeks after I got it. Supposed to be a recall. The painted pinstriping started to peel, which was fixed at no charge. I still need to take it in for the mirrors peeling also. Very quiet car at first, but I'm noticing the drivers side door rattles and creaks over bumps, feels like it would be hanging or about to fall off. I plan to take it in this week. I hear the door just needs to be insulated which is covered under warranty. The cupholders are a bad design, I admit, but where else would they fit? The black leather is great, very comfortable seats, however gets a bit hot in Texas weather. I feel the A/C could cool a bit more and quicker but I'm comparing to Chrysler products, which have very cold air. Acceleration is great and I find it hard staying under 100mph. Thats when this car really shows it stuff. Seems like the Acuras and even z-28's freak when I accelerate past them. I like this cars styling and plan to fix as I find problems. Not to the point of getting rid of it for sure. I get tons of compliments and its nice to have a limited edition car like the GLI. Most people have never heard of it when I tell them what model I have. Nice wheel package and exhaust. Very stylish little car.

Strength:

looks good, rides smooth.

Weakness:

front seats don't recline easy.round adjusting device sucks. front seats have to be all the way up to fold back seats down. no leg room in back seats. seats are lint collectors.

i am really starting to hate this car. the problems started last year when my car kept getting stuck in park and making me late for everywhere i had to be. then while driving down the interstate in rush hour traffic one evening a lady pulls up next to me and motions for me to roll my window down so she can tell me my brake lights are not working. That's safe!! when i finally get it into the shop come to find out it's all tied in together and it's a bad brake switch under the brake peddle. $12.00 part $75.00 after installation(not under warranty). then last week i'm driving in a monsoon and go to roll my window down real fast to get rid of some fog and it won't go back up. it's the regulator and it's on NATION-WIDE BACK ORDER. not to mention the service writer tells me that they have since replaced the part because the plastic clips keep breaking. HELLO! sounds like a defective part to me.RECALL! the service writer informs me it's because of the climate i live. HELLO IT'S FLORIDA. what am i supposed to do, drive it only on the two days a year it gets cold here. glad i'm leasing. i can get rid of this junk soon. i will never ever purchase another vw again.

Strength:

Looks good (sitting in the dealers lot)

Weakness:

Totally unreliable. There are better products out there for the same (or less) money. Keep looking!

I purchased this car new with 0 miles. It currently has 38,000 miles. I pamper my cars and service them religously. However, even with TLC this car has been a major headache. Summary: Drivers door front window regulator broke 3 times (replaced under warranty) Passenger door front window regulator broke 3 times (replaced under warranty) Dealer states that VW has not come up with a permanent "fix" for this problem and they cannot assure me that it won't happen again. They also said that due to the current mileage, future repairs will not be covered under warranty. A new regulator is around $300.00 At 26,000 miles, drivers auto remote door lock/handle stopped working. $65 labor to adjust (not under warranty) At 32,000 miles, Engine Temperature gauge stopped working. Part $12.50 Labor $130.00 (not under warranty) At 38,000 miles, Fuel pump and fuel pump relay stopped working. Parts $380.00 Labor $180.00 (not under warranty) Whats next? I won't be around to find out. Upon picking up my car today after the fuel pump repair, I drove directly to a Honda dealership and traded it for a new Accord. These problems are not unusual. I have friends who own Jettas, Passats and Golfs, all with similar problems. Drivers Wanted?? How about reliability wanted?? I will NEVER own another VW product. Further, I would discourage anyone considering a new or used VW purchase.

Strength:

Build quality, ride (I have the standard suspension), seating quality, cargo room, quality leather upholstery and interior parts and I really like the solid 'thunk' I get when I close the doors.

Weakness:

Engine noise at highway speeds, transmission occasionally shifts abruptly when throttle is again applied after slowing down from highway speed. Cupholder blocks radio.

I guess I may be lucky, but my experience with a Jetta has been far better than most of the posters. I made a 6,800 mile shortly after I bought the car, over some of the steepest roads in No. American and it drove and performed great. My car has every available option, but the base 2.0 engine with automatic transmission. Even with the least powerful engine, I had no problem ascending any pass in Colorado at 60-70 miles per hour. My car is beautifully put together (being a wagon, it was made in Wolfsburg which I understand builds better cars than the Puebla, Mexico plant), rides like a much larger car, is comfortable, and has lots of room in the wagon cargo area which has a nifty retractable cover. The only problem I have had in over 11,000 miles is to replace the fuse on the radio.

Strength:

Factory Stereo, looks, smooth ride, front seats comfortable, trunk space.

Weakness:

AIR FLOW SENSOR HAS YET TO BE RECALLED WHILE THOUSANDS OF JETTAS HAVING THIS PROBLEM. WINDOW TROUBLES. OVERPRICED DEALERSHIP SERVICE RATES. ENGINE LOUD AT 130 - 145 Kil. Knob to tilt seats hard to turn, Dont attempt while driving. Cupholders block stereo and are super flimsy.

I always heard to buy a VW for its reliability and long last engines. Well I just purchased a 99.5 GLS and within 5 days of owning my used car here are the problems I have encountered so far. Driver Window bracket busted, check engine light comes on (air flow sensor), sunroof interior cover left like oil stains on fabric. Overall I was rather happy untill all these things took place then I began to wonder and its only been 5 days since I have had car. I also replaced the cup holder which was 80.00 CDN. The dealership I took it too over charge on everything even the oil changes. Learned a lesson and only got raped once. DONT GOTO VW DEALERSHIPS FOR AFTER WARRANTY SERVICE. THEY RAPE YOU! I went to Mississaugavw in the auto mall Miss, On. Canada. Get the leather package as I did very comfortable and less stain problems.

Weakness:

I have had this car serviced over 11 times for multiple reasons. I had to visit this website to see if I was the only one with a lemon. Looks like I'm not alone. I've had the windows break 3 times (the regulators)- and it just happened again last night. The air bag light has illuminated twice for no reason. The engine light has illuminated 3 times. I brought the car in for a recall, but everything checked out fine. Three to four weeks later, the engine light went off again and I had to bring it back in - to replace the part this time. Except - the part is on backorder! All visits to vw are 1. to diagnose the problem and 2. to bring the vehicle back for repair after the part is received. So, each problem means 2 visits. I know the service staff by name. This latest window problem (and the engine light is still illuminated waiting for recalled part)is not covered under warranty because, get this, the last repair done less than 12,000 miles and 1 year (repair warranty time period) does not specify WHICH window broke! I only have 26,000 miles on the car and it is in great shape cosmetically, but this is too much. In short, I'll NEVER buy another vw. The service center has been ve

Strength:

It has none.

Weakness:

The car is on its FOURTH transmission.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I have had $4000.00 in repairs on this vehicle in 6 months. I bought the vehicle with 82,000 miles on it and it now has 93,500. This car was purchased from the sales manger of Gunther VW, this was his wife's car who purchased the car new. I bought this car because I needed ecconomical, reliable transportation. My credit cards are now maxed in order for me to afford the repairs on this vehicle. I have been repremanded for missing work due to car problems, which is a huge added stress in a poor job market. This is not what a car is supposed to do. It is my opion that this manufacturer should be avoided. There are many other car manufacturers that make superior products at the same price point.

A great car to drive, don't know what all these bad reviews are about. Have had the car for five or six years and the only real repair it's been in for is an oil leak. It's got the 2.0L engine, but still a hoot to drive.
