Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

- Has get up and go! I have a stick shift and I like to drive fast. - Huge trunk -- 15 cubic feet (larger than new ones), plus the seats fold down. - Programmable wipers - this is a neat little feature. You can actually set the timing of the intermittent wipers - to whatever you want. - Steering and handling - nice and tight; sometimes I feel like a race car driver -- OK until recently when my power steering went out (lol) - Nice aesthetics even after 7 years; it aged well. - Good gas mileage. - Safe (?) - I've rearended 2 people (while going less than 10 mph) and have been rear-ended --- no dents or scratche

Weakness:

- No glove compartment - this bothered me at first, but I got over it. - Cup holders could be bigger. - After 6 years, paint on roof started oxidizing - Main complaint for this year/model: must have all doors open before gas tank can be opened. (??? go figure)

My Jetta and I have grown up together. I leased the car brand new when I was 24. I'm now going on 32. I LOVE my Jetta. It's been a great car. Unfortunately, over the past year, more and more problems have been cropping up -- most recently, I was told I need a new power steering rack and power steering pump -- to the tune of $1500. This has prompted me to start looking at new cars, so I'm feeling sad about saying goodbye to "old faithful," but am excited about test driving the new Jettas. I have my eye on the GLS 1.8T! Like I mentioned, I leased the car, then ended up buying it (I was young, I didn't know anything about leasing/buying). I have always taken it in for regular maintenance (usually to the dealer) and no MAJOR problems until now.

Strength:

Most amazing 4 cylinder i have drivin. Very easy to make 1.8t have much more power than vr6. best fit and finish of any car under 40K great body design.

Weakness:

thin paint. soft ride could be tightend up a little. expensive oil changes. 15 in tires and thin sway bars are weakest link in jettas handling. THIS CAR IS NOT FOR EVERY ONE, DON'T BUY IT BECAUSE ITS POPULAR IMAGE, BUY IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO DRIVE and can not yet afford an AUDI S4/BMW M3!!

I am amazed that ather people are having so many problems. or could it be that those are the only people that look for a site like this. I love my car, i have had very few problems (except my window is acting up). this is one of the most well built cars in its class. i do not care that this car is assembled in Mexico, that means nothing. I am far more interested in where the car and its parts are designed and MFG(Germany).

Strength:

Ride, interior quality, appeal (girls love it)

Weakness:

The only weakness is that i cant afford a GLX. but for the money you won't find a flaw.

VW Jetta 2002, GLS 2.0L/115hp The only reason I wish i got a turbo is so that my friends quit bugging me about how cool it would've been. Personally, 2.0L/115hp is just fine. On the highway, it has plenty of passing tourque, if you press the gas right. It's german, so the ride is very smooth indeed. So far managed to get 120mph on the highway, later got pulled over doing 100 on 65. I hope my license won't get suspended.

Strength:

Great safety (we're also Volvo people, so...), reliability, sportiness, handling (yeah, we're BMW people too, so...), and while not being unique on the road it is definitely a solid buy.

Weakness:

NO problems yet, but keeping our fingers crossed. Hopefully the problems others have reported with earlier model years have been worked out.

We purchased a 2001 1.8T Jetta with the sport suspension, the whole works, after doing much research and had very few problems with the car. There was an emissions light that kept coming on and it took several trips to the dealer to figure out why it kept coming on. After that we had the car about 9 months with absolutely NO problems. We did find out, however, that the car is extremely safe in a crash -- my stepmother managed to hit an extremely icy patch of mountain road on her way to work and skidded, and flew backwards over a small embankment and was finally stopped by a rather large, old tree. The tree and my stepmother were unharmed, the car, unfortunately was no longer in any sort of working order. The people who say the car afterwards could not believe that she walked away from the accident unharmed -- the passenger compartment held up exactly as it was supposed to. With the insurance money, another VW was purchased, which we've had a little over three months. Absolutely no complaints about the new one (which is now my car). The 2002 isn't quite as quick off the line as the 2001, and the sport suspension doesn't seem quite as firm but still it's more than adequate.

Strength:

All the little toys are fabulous-keyless entry, windows up and down with outdoor key, auto up and down driver and passenger front windows, vanity lights on/off with door&visor movement, the tiny visor above the rear-view mirror, HUGE trunk, lots of little pockets to hold stuff, looks great, quiet ride, and overall tons of fun.

Weakness:

The window thing really stinks. My past experiences have taught me that VW makes great engines, and therefore, overall, great cars, but; it's all their plasticwear, all the tiny misc. stuff that breaks-windows, handles, etc.

All my life I've loved and respected VW. But I've gotta say, this Jetta has definitely pushed my limits. Both my driver side and passenger side front window regulators have broken now - and from what I've read and heard, probably won't be the last time-how sad. My brakes are acting funny in this Texas heat-not exactly what you want to worry about in DFW traffic. And now my turn signals have broken-not a simple fuse problem either. I have certainly taken full advantage of my extended warranty. I've barely had the car 14 mos. and have approx. 21,000 miles on it. My poor baby has issues. Also, I've noticed on both the VW's I've owned, they DO NOT like to start with A/C on. It's really hard to get it to "get up and go" first thing out of the parking lot immediately after starting. Once your going, my little 115-hp engine leaves most others behind...which I just love. I'll definitely stay with VW, these manufacturer defects just disappoint me. Also-I think it's funny that the Germans didn't think that when cups get hot, they sweat, and when the cup-holders are above the radio your cup's sweat drips all over your radio - water and electric items - no bueno. I'm extremely cautious.

Strength:

Good accelaration with the 1.8Turbo engine, nice interior, big trunk space.

Weakness:

Poor power windows, has a recall.

I've been driving my Jetta for one year and unfortunately the car is giving me problems with the power windows - maybe I should call them "magic windows" because they just dissapear when I most need them in rain or hot weather. The electric window regulator clips are of the worst quality and they have broken twice in my car. It seems that the problem is getting worse since other Jetta owners seem to also be having this problem, and it seems that VW not corrected the problem since 2000. In addition to this, the Jettas manufactured between 2000 and 2002 are on recall because there is a risk of fire with the electronic control unit of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If you are planning to buy a Jetta, I would recommend you to get a different car until VW fixes these problems.

Window problems, engine could be a little more powerful.

Great first car. The window problem sucks. They just broke the first time and from what I hear it won't be the last time. Other than that, pretty good car. Wish I had gotten the turbo. Hopefully I won't have many more problems, but I did but a long extended warranty (102,000 mi.).

Strength:

Excellent gas milage is what I was looking for when purchasing a Jetta. I currently own 2 other Jetta's(1985 and a 1991). Both run perfectly. The handling on the cars is excellent, and the life of them is even greater. They last forever if you take care of them.

Weakness:

The only real weakness that the older Jetta's have is their engine power. Mine are all around 95hp. But it gets me to where I need to go.

I have owned my Jetta for a year and a half now. The only work needed on it was bleeding the breaks. That is the only problem that I have had so far with mine. It currently has 78,800 miles on it. And has no record of having any troubles as some may say Jetta's do. It is in excellent condition and runs nice. I get excellent gas milage for its age(29 mpg).

Vehicle handles very well. Tdi gets great diesel mileage. Looks very good.

Weakness:

Window regulators bad, company won't recall.(Very common probem with Jettas) Oil changes $85.00

I enjoy driving my Jetta and was very high on it until my window regulator went out. I have talked to sales and service people who are embarassed that it isn't recalled as so many regulators have gone out.(A very expensive part.) So many in fact that they are back ordered. I have lost my faith in the company and it's integrity.
