Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

runs good. Thats all I can say.

Weakness:

Volkswagen need to spend more time fixing the cars they have out there and stop building this car until the fix the large problem they have on hand. Just an eye opener for you, Volkswagen new about this problem 3 years ago.......and here we still wait for a solution.

I leased this car brand new in June and 1 month and 3 days later my window regulator went out on the passenger side of the car. The Dealer will not have the part in until mid September if Volkswagen manufacturing plant sends them the part and they cannot promise there will be one available for my car. I looked in other states to find the part and they have the same problem. In California one dealer has a 200 person waiting list for the same part, and my dealer is getting 50 to 100 cars a week with the same problem. Very disappointed with the service. Can anyone say CLASS ACTION SUIT! I can kick myself for getting out of an SUV to go back to a car.

Strength:

Speedy, handles great.

Weakness:

Spends too much time sitting in my garage waiting for the dealer to fix it. The window keeps falling inside the door. (4 times in under 2 years!) Contiains lots of cheap parts, which keep breaking. Warranty too short considering the above problems.

When I first got my Jetta I was thrilled. It was speedy, handled great, and was fun to drive. After three years, I'm selling it and getting something else. The warranty ran out a year ago and I can't afford to take it to the dealer once a month to be fixed. The last straw was the window falling into the door for the fourth time. It turns out they use cheap parts in the windows that break easily. What really irks me is that VW has know about this for some time, but couldn't care less. I still have to cough up money to fix it. I like my car a lot, but I don't have wads of money stashed under my mattress.

Strength:

Very good handling and superior brakes. Good size trunk.

Weakness:

Excessive engine noise, cloth upholstery attracts dirt and difficult to clean, inferior paint finish, inadequate legroom in the back, poor gas mileage.

I am leasing this 2001 Jetta with the 2.0L engine. Although the car built for safety, the 2.0L engine is way too noisy -so loud that it drowns the sound system during low gear accelerations. It's not much better at highway speeds either. My Altima hums compared to this so called German engineering! The car's finish is inferior the car looks like its at least 5 years old already!. I am so glad I decided to lease and not purchase this vehicle otherwise I would have been one sorry individual.

Strength:

tight steering, no vibration in the steerin wheel. Handles well at high speeds. Adequate power. Well made interior. Responsive. Wide torque curve. Very fun to drive. Sound system is awsome. It has Speed Dependent Volume, which I first saw in the porsche 911. What can I say. It is German engenieering at its finest.

Weakness:

Paint scratches easy. Parts are expensive (if something were to go wrong). Cup holder in the way of the stereo. No sixth gear. Engine runs kinda fast at 95mph

I have had my jetta for four months and love it more and more. The 2.0 engine provides adequate power and quite a bit of performance. I have read many complaints about window problems. I havn't had any yet and my ABS system hasn't had a recall. This car is one of the best engenieered cars on the market. I have driven fords-which are total pieces of cr*p-and I have driven hondas-which have cheaply made interiors. VW is extremely well made. I was sold on my dads 95 jetta and that is why i decided to buy mine. He has 122000 miles on the car and has not had one problem.

Model Reviewed: Jetta TDI

Strength:

1.) Handles well 2.) Great mileage on the diesel 3.) Monsoon sound is top notch 4.) Leather interior is very good

Weakness:

1.) Door noises (see review) 2.) Seats uncomfortable in longer drives 3.) Paint quality poor (scratches easily) 4.) Built in Mexico 5.) VW Customer service

I traded in a 2001 TDI for a 2002 in order to upgrade the warrantee and interior (black velor to leather). The 2001 was a decent car, only problem being a squeek in the dash, and two blown monsoon speakers in 12 months. The 2002 is another story. Windows haven't broken yet however 3 out of 4 of the doors squeek and rattle in the area around the top of the doorframe/window. It has been back to the dealer 6 times for this. Adjusted the doors, adjusted the locks, lubricated the hell out of everything. Last time they took all the rubber door mouldings off and replaced with new ones. No difference. The service mgr. tells me there is no "fix" yet for my problem. Fed up I go to VW customer care. What do they do? They tell me to deal with the service mgr at the dealership! I like the car and enjoy (for the most part)driving it. Hell I bought a second one! But I have had it with this one. Want to unload it at this point. Judging from many other reviews the troubles may just be beginning. German engineering is great, just don't have them built in Mexico...

After reveiwing what's available on the small car market for a month I deceided on a Jetta GLS. With a manual 5 speed and the 115 HP 2.0 litre it's a great little vehicle! I used to race a Scorroco for a few years in the SCCA and I put 100,000 plus miles on that as a everyday driver and weekend race car. I fully expect the Jetta to be a tight, solid vehicle to keep for the long term. With 20% more power, leather interior, sunroof, power windows, killer CD player, 30 mpg I doubt I'll grow tired of it. And if you check out the specs, you'll find the VR6 is only 1.6 seconds faster 0 to 60. Plus, as VW say about the 2.0, "This is a very understressed engine" Take my word, after racing the original 1.8 for as long as I did, this engine (with proper Maint)is good for well over 100,000 miles. If you like driving you owe it to yourself to drive a Jetta!

Strength:

1. ABSOLUTLY fantastic night time lighting, everything lights up in blue and red even steering wheel buttons. Amazing! 2. Very thought out interior, I even like the cupholders, much more room than my sister's VW New Bug. 3. So far... gas mileage! 4.The blacked out windows are Great! (hard to see in easy to see out) 5. Overall visibility is great (I learned to drive in big SUV's) 6. Unlimited options can make Jettas as nice or as Base as you want, you pick! 7. This car makes you feel protected with the antitheft system and the ability to lock virtually every storage nook and cranny! 8 . Fit and finish is awesome, my 6 cd changer while in the trunk, still is hidden away in its own lockable storage area. 9. Monsoon Stereo is worth it's weight in gold, LOUD AND CLEAR!!!

Weakness:

These are all minor. 1. Lint seems to be uncontrolable on dashboard. 2. Wheels hard to keep clean (break dust is heavy) 3. Still working out timing on manual trasmission. 4.Consol while functional and everything, does seem a tad small, but the trunk is huge.

My Jetta is my first car, at 16 all I wanted was an automatic because that is what I am comfortable driving. I thought my dad was crazy when he got my 1.8 Turbo-manual, (180 HP is PLENTY) I thought to myself, great my first car and can't even drive it. Mine came with leather heated seats (cold natured) the monsoon sound system (EXCELLENT!) and the upgraded 17 inch wheels and black tinted glass, (it is a silver car). So I was pleased with the equippment and my dad wanted me to learn to drive a stick. Well after about an hour in a parking lot, shifting from first to second and parking, etc, I was able to drive home. It was so easy to use and learn on, (By the way I am not endorsing the idea! It was kinda frightening!) Well several days later, I love it I would suggest this car to any male sixteen year old that likes driving. OK on to other stuff...

Strength:

Quick and fun to drive. Nice interior.

Weakness:

The cheapest exterior paint I've ever seen on a car. Too expensive to own. Repairs far too frequent. The electronics are the major downfall!!! This is a money pit!

All around the worst car I ever owned...and the only other cars I have had are a 1989 Ford Escort and a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra. I take extremely good care of my car, since it is my first new car. Starting from day 1, driving the car off the lot my rear passenger side door lock broke. I have taken the car in for every scheduled maintenance, which is rather costly to have done at the dealership. I have owned my car just under 2 years and of course half a year ago my 24,000mi warranty expired. Since then, I have had to replace breaks, window regulators, door locks and a Max Air flow sensor. Now, I have come to find that the extremely cheap exterior paint and clear coat used has started to bubble and chip off my drivers side mirror. In addition, my air conditioner is leaking into the passenger side of the car. I am hoping that VW takes responsibility for the paint problem at least...but I doubt it, since I just spoke to a customer care VW "advocate" and she told me that the paint warranty expires at 24,000mi. How does paint wear that fast? I am truly disappointed in VW and I will never buy one again...Time to go with a Honda!!
