Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Nice stereo position, nice sound system (do they think that''ll make everything else go away) which you''ll need to drown out noise.

Weakness:

Everything else. Very plastic. Rattles. Nearly impossible to change plugs 2 & 3. Head gasket leaks. Eats brake pads. CV joints wear prematurely. Auto trans bites. Leaks trans fluid. Very slow after 3K RPMs. Sluggish, heavy and slow.

As stated in many other reviews--DONT BUY THIS CAR. Buy a Honda or Acura. As expected, I had to do some repairs, but damn, 8 months later and >$1200, it''s a total P.O.S. that needs to go. At 83K miles, I''ve replaced brake pads (twice in 4 months), entire right axle, exhaust heatshield (5 times), brake lines, and so on. MAF sensor is bad, oil runs into air filter, spark plugs are difficult to change. Now the head gasket is leaking. DONT BUY THIS CAR. Do your research and learn from my mistake!

Weakness:

Starter- Replaced @ 40KM Exhaust- Replaced @ 50KM and needs another one @ 150KM Tires- Wears very quickly as the car seems to be always out of alignment. Paint- Front bumper looks as if it were sand blasted. I won''t even bother waxing the car anymore due to the countless chips and scratches. Manual Transmission- Fixed Twice due to broken reverse gear. Door Trim- keeps peeling off. Alternator- Replaced @ 120KM. Door Locks- Always freeze in winter. Emergency brake- Sticks in winter time and causes rapid wear on rear rotors. Ignition- Faulty switches. Rear suspension- needs new shocks/springs=very rough ride. Dealer Experiences- over-charges you up the a$$. Very long wait to get anything done on the car.

I will never buy a VW again. I should of done my homework before buying this German...er, I mean MEXICAN P.O.S!

Strength:

- The 1.8 liter double overhead cam variable valve timing 5 valve per cylinder turbocharged engine [gasp for air] is a gem. Though I haven''t yet, replace the engine control computer for an aftermarket version ($300-$500) and discover 200+ HP and Mustang GT equivalent acceleration. - Ergonomics are very good. - Dealerships can be great. Paolozzi VW of Utica, NY demonstrated this - see below for details. - Cavernous trunk... if your item isn''t golf clubs. - Mileage. I have the best of both worlds - prodigious power, while averaging 28 MPG and seeing 33 in highway driving.

Weakness:

- Tan cloth seats are lint traps. - Dealerships can be awful. Southern States of Raleigh, NC is an example of this. After largely screwing me on the price (mostly my fault, but c''mon... MSRP?), the service was deplorable. No convenience (we''ll get you from the dealership to work, but it''s up to you to come get your car), poor results. - I had an intermittent problem with the turbo: on trips over two hours, the turbo would fail to pressurize, leaving my acceleration back with Hyundais. Southern states never addressed the problem. Rob at Paolozzi VW of Utica, NY bent over backwards to track down and address the problem. It was ultimately traced to a bad O-ring seal, improperly installed at the factory. - Cupholder... first week I had the car, a large iced tea spilled over the passenger seat due to these weak cupholders. - Not wide enough a car to put golf clubs in the trunk easily. They have to be angled. taking up most of the space. - VERY small back seat. My three-year-old son barely fits back there in his car seat. - Suspension too... European. Bumps register as kicks, but accelerate or turn, and the body leans.

Great deal of good to go with a little bad. Dealerships vary greatly in their desire to get the job done. Fun car to drive. I purchased this car as the answer to my need: 4 doors, 5 speeds, and enough power to be fun. I might buy it again, but more likely would buy a Passat (also 1.8T) or Audi A6 (2.7T), just for more space. For anyone seeking 1.8 Turbo resources, check out http://www.20vturbo.com. That''s the best 1.8T site I''ve yet found.

Totally Unreliable Very Expensive to Fix

Don''t buy VW! It''s not worth the risk. From what I can tell the good ones are great and the bad ones are horrible. As soon as the warranty was up, my car fell apart. I have put thousands of dollars into it. At 65,000 miles I have had new brakes, several new tires, a new ignition (twice), new starter (twice), and I need a new instrument cluster because it only works when it feels like it. Side strip has also fallen off. I''ve seen 2 other cars in my area with this problem and read several reviews that have said the same thing. The dealer tells me that VW won''t do anything because my car is 5 years old. I''ve driven much older cars with many fewer problems. I''ll never buy VW again, and I suggest you don''t either.

Strength:

The car looks real cool. Decent pick-up for entering a highway but it bucks a bit going from 1st to 2nd. I''ve gotten very decent gas milage and use regurlar gas in it. Love the heated seats. And the stereo is good but not as good as I had hoped. CD''s sound great..radio sometimes not as clear and the sound defination can be muttled.

Weakness:

Lets start small annoyances. The seat material is a Giant Lint Magnet and have put a lint brush in the car and I need to use it all the time. The cup holders are functional but when in use it blocks the radio from sight and makes it difficult to see the buttons. The bieest complaint I have about the Jetta is that it rolls backwards. There are many hills in my area and after parking the car on in up incline for a day or so and then trying to pull out of parking spot is tough. With the car in drive the Jetta does some MAJOR backwards rolling. I have learned to keep on foot on the gas and the other on the break until it finally decides to go forward. After the initial panic of will it hit the car behind be even though I am drive, after it ''wakes up" and realizes I want to go froward it does. Just have to remember to use both feet after the car hasn''t been used for days...hours.

Overall it is a very nice handling car. Very comfortable and for me (I am not in the back deat ) Haven''t had to take it for service yet as I only use it on weekends. There are a few problems/annoyances though that I will describe below

Great car!! Very smooth ride, lots of power, and everything feels sturdy and very well built. The Long Beach rims are the icing on the German cake. Cup holder is an issue and so is the seat adjustment knob. I have the triptronic and I notice a jerking feel when I shift from 3rd to 4th using the triptronic? Anybody else have the same thing? The girls in town are drooling over this sporty car. I love it from top to bottom. It is everything I ever wanted in a car!!! A+ XXXXX

Strength:

Nice Interior, Initiall the CD system was of very good quality

Weakness:

EVERYTHING else: transmission problems, electrical problems, faulty windows unable to be fixed, too many rattling noises when driving, CD player is now skipping,

Within one month of taking delivery of the car, I had the transmission “freeze” on me while trying to leave a shopping mall. I took it to the dealer, and they said they found no problem. The transmission failed about 4 more times before the dealer decided that they would replace the transmission. But this was not before it froze on me in some very dangerous places, such as on the highway in the middle of the night, which put my life in danger. Quite a few potential Golf/Jetta/Bora buyers were dissuaded from buying one after I told them about the problems I had and still continue to have. In addition to transmission problems, I have been experiencing electrical problems. The car has shut off on me quite a few times. This usually happens when I come to a stop (at an intersection or traffic light, say) and attempt to go again. This is very frustrating, stressful and unsafe. I have nearly had potentially fatal accidents because of this. Additionally, I recently started having problems with my windows. On at least three occasions, the device that holds up the windows broke (I think they called it the regulator) and I was unable to put my window back up. This left me at the mercy of the weather, thieves and everything else. This is highly inconvenient and unsafe. At the moment I am hearing so much rattling at all four windows that I am not taking the chance to wind any of them down. A few weeks ago when I went to get my window fixed, there were 3 other owners of Golfs/Jettas/Boras with the same problem. Apparently, this problem is not confined to Golfs only, but Jettas/Boras as well. With a premium over other brands of cars in the same category, there should not be so many rattles when driving, far less all the problems mentioned above. One should not have to be afraid or hesitant to drive their new car because they fear that it will cost them their life or just be a miserable experience. Volkswagen should not be allowed to make cars of questionable quality and get away with it. It is downright wrong to spend so much money just for a life of misery. Buying this car has been the biggest mistake of my life.

I noticed that most poeple who complaint about the Jetta have 1999, 2000 Jetta. So does that means that VW has improved in 2001 and 2002 Production? Are they still be made in Mexico? Please email me hohohong@yahoo.com of what you think of my thought.
