Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

It''s cute, fast, and fun to drive.

Weakness:

VW dealership service is hit or miss. The cars are all built in Mexico and there seem to be rampant quality control issues. All the above listed problems have occurred within the first 15 months of ownership. I wouldn''t recommend that anyone buy this car. I bought a new car to avoid repair trips and it''s unbelievable all the problems I have had. I am afraid to keep the car.

I loved this car when I first bought it. It is fast, fun and manueverable as well as cute. But before I had reached a 1000 miles I was having small problems. By the time I''d had the car for 11 months, it qualified as a lemon in arbitration. I have had 6 repairs on the front brake caliper. It makes a hideous squealing noise when I am driving, stops when brakes are applied. Other problems: the doors all rattle, the windshield glass has a ripple, all the interior plastique coating was peeling within a month of getting the car, the clear coating will scratch if you look at it wrong, the cupholders BOTH stick, the velour collects lint like nothing I''ve ever seen, something in the column behind the driver''s seat rattles, the trunk is hard to open, sometimes the key won''t turn in the ignition, the engine has been making a strange ticking noise when idling, and the emergency brake button rattled.

Strength:

1 - Love the 17" Longbeach rims. Had to have those. 2- ENGINE is smooth through the power band. 3 - The style screams Bimmer, in and out - price doesn''t. 4 - Tons of features from performance (disc brakes all around, outstanding OEM Michellins, powerful engine, etc.) to creature comforts (Climatronic, heated seats, power moon roof, manual rear window shade, etc.). 5 - It''s not a Beetle. 6 - Plethora of aftermarket products. 7 - It''s not domestic. Better yet, it''s a German automobile.

Weakness:

1 - Transmission. Flooring it, I have no problem. But it seems to "jam" into third gear from second under normal acceleration. When it happens there''s a pretty jarring jolt. After a trip to the dealer, a reset of the codes and topping off of the fluid, the problem resurfaced within a few months. I think it''s mechanical. Thank God for a beefy powertrain warranty. 2 - There''s another funny problem with the CD player, and believe it or not I think it''s related to using the brake pedal when starting the car. If the brake is depressed while starting the car, the CD player will produce no sound, yet continue to play. I have to switch to the radio, then back to the CD player to get sound back. Doesn''t always happen. 3 - I can''t change the oil. The VR6 has a dry sump system, so that the filter (with no external metal housing) sits in the oil pan, basically. It''s as much as any other car to have the dealer do it, but it''s not as much as it would cost for me to do it myself. 4 - The features do fit the price, but the price... wow. And it went up for the 2002 model year.

It''s my baby. I have the GLX (VR6 / four-speed auto) with every factory option plus a dealer installed OEM single disc CD. I plan on some minor modifications all around eventually.

Nice looking car Nice pick up

Weakness:

Everything else

I have had nothing but problems with this car. The first week my cup holder broke. Shortly after, my check engine light came on. When I took it in for service I was told nothing was wrong and they just had to reset the code. Not even 2 days later it was back on. I bring it in again to find that the part causing this problem had been recalled and I had never been notified. Next thing was that my driver''s side window broke, it would not come up. I took it back in and they told me this was a common problem with the 2000 Jetta''s--why it was not being recalled for that I don''t know. While in the shop I had them change my oil, only they called me and said they could not b/c Jiffy Lube, who had changed it last damaged the oil plug. I asked Jiffy Lube to fix this problem and they did, free of charge. Then 1 week ago my oil light came on, and once again it had to go back into the shop, and once again they told me it was Jiffy Lube who messed things up. I am no longer under warranty so I paid $500 to get this fixed. I will NEVER buy a Volkswagen again, and I have already told a lot of people to do the same. It''s a shame I loved this car--but it is a lemon!

Strength:

-rides nice -Comfortable interior -Good stock stereo -Easy shifting for a 5-speed -Decent trunk space for size of car -attractive body style -attractive dash

Weakness:

-Every time the air has been moist/humid, my car would strain to start up (almost as if it had flooded), but if I let it run for a while, it clears itself out - Has anyone else had a problem like this? -Not great gas mileage -Belt chirps at 47,000 mi -when it gets up to about 2800 rpm, there''s a slight ticking noise - don''t know what this is -Break hangs up especially when I turn right and when I move 0-10 mph. -no trunk light or interior mid-car dome light (I''m used to having both) -Doesn''t like windy days

I find the new body style very attractive. I don''t think I would''ve bought anything but the VR6 - all I hear is negative feedback about the 4-cyl. Haven''t had and serious problems as of yet. Despite the few minor (I hope) problems so far, I''m pretty satisfied - it really is a fun car.

i''m not impressed, my airbag light turned on, and needed to replace airbag system, then my check engine light turned on, due to a faulty mass airflow sensor (all of which costing a good 1500 dollars ) now i hear creaking at the pillar for the doors, you know the one in between the front and back doors. wind noise at the driver side, or it might be interference or something. then my glove compartment broke. plus my rear cup holders dont open no more.hmm...lemon? and i also hear rattling of the doors when going over bumps...now i treated this car like it were my son, i loved it (at first) i also made sure to go over bumps slowly and dodge all pot holes...now look what happened...mind u this is all after warranty.

Dash board is very cool, rides nice

cup holder is in a bad spot, back seat has NO leg room!

Have had lots of trouble with car since I''ve leased it. Lots of wind noise through the driver side door, the radio broke the first week, the cup holder wouldn''t retract and the glove box doesn''t close or lock. It''s now now at the shop because the engine malfunction light came on while driving it. It''s almost as if they didn''t finish the car.

Model Reviewed: Jetta 1.8t wagon

Strength:

Rock solid build quality Even base model has lots of standard equip Ride & Handling surprising fuel economy with 1.8t

Weakness:

-a bit pricey, but resale value seems to --justify initial cost -base engine weak. Do not buy a base model with automatic if you want to use the passing lane.

I just traded in a ''99 Jetta GL (base model, new shape) for a turbo wagon. I loved the ''99-- it was very well put together and the materials were high quality. I tested some Japenese compacts, and the materials, especially interior plastics, felt very cheap. My old car had exactly zero problems over 58,000 miles. I have heard a lot of complaints about the power of the base engine, and I found that it was OK with a manual transmission-- just downshift if you need to pass. None of that is a problem with the 1.8t engine. If you get a Jetta, this is the best choice by far. It is both more powerful and fuel efficient than the V6, and unlike other turbo engines I have driven, you never feel the turbo kick in, and you don''t have to reve the engine like mad to get some power. The 1.8t comes with traction control, and this has been an excellent car for trips to the ski areas. The price I paid looks high, but the car was loaded and I got a very good price for my trade in (only $4000 less than I paid for it 3 years and 58,000 miles ago).

Strength:

Very good handling. Nice stereo. Cool looking dash...although it a bit gimmicky I think.

Weakness:

Base engine only 115hp! Not much power for $16k! Still feels more powerful than it is. Never cared or VW shifters. Can the key ring be any bigger? Not enough bang for buck.

Not my car but a friends and I drive it very often. It''''s got the base engine but no power options. It handles well but I just don''''t see the attraction to the base model. It''''s not powerful enough to be sporty and is overpriced. Definitely a chick car. Get the V6 if you want to have fun in this car but that will cost you lots more. This base Jetta is not cheap considering it''''s not very powerful and has power nothing. They look ok but nothing special and long term reliablitly is probably better in a Japanese car. For the price of this thing, I''''d take a 140hp Sentra SE-R anyday.
