Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Smooth ride, seats are fairly comfortable but have no lateral support. large trunk.

Weakness:

I could write a novel about the problems I''ve had with this car, but I''ll try to keep it short. 1. Burns about a quart of oil every 700 miles. 2. Engine knocks when accelerating. 3. Annoying interior rattles and squeaks throughout the dash. 4. Idles roughly after engine warms up. 5. Factory alarm goes off when I unlock the doors, and sometimes goes off when I''m driving the car. After a couple minutes it shuts the car down, leaving me stranded. 6. ABS light is always on. 7. Door moulding falls off. 8. Malfunctioning remote trunk release button. 9. Water leaks into trunk and back seat floor filling up spare tire well and mildewing carpet. 10. Loud buzzing/rattling sound under the car when the engine is between two and three thousand RPM. 11. The rear power door locks stick and will only lock/unlock manually. 12. Front window seal is falling out. 13. Power sunroof broke and came out of the rails the second time I tried to open it. Now for some reason it intermittently pops up and down on it''s own. 14. Shifter is loose and makes chunking/rattling sounds. 15. Had to replace the break pads and rotors twice, and the break master cylinder once in the last three years. 16. Pushed the ci

My experience with this car has been a complete nightmare. The car felt pretty good and didn''t have any problems when I test drove it, so I thought I''d give Volkswagen a try. This has become the most expensive mistake I''ve ever made in my life! I wish I had access to the Internet before I bought this car, go read just about any VW forum and you''ll find out what these cars are about. When visiting a few Volkswagen forums to discuss some of the more serious problems with the car (oil burning and engine knocking) to hopefully get some insight on what''s wrong, everyone replied saying they all had the same problems, and no one seemed to think it was unusual. Every VW forum I go to there is hundreds of complaints about oil consumption, even on brand new Volkswagens. How is VW getting away with this, why isn''t there a recall? Even my VW mechanic says that burning oil is completely "normal" for a VW, and I''m just going to have to live with it. Refilling the engine with oil every 500 miles isn''t really a big deal to me. The real problem is when the burning oil causes $100 O2 sensors, $20 spark plugs, and $400 catalytic converters to foul and need replacement every year. My son''s Civic has over twice the miles my Volkswagen has and it has never burned a drop of oil. Like other people on here have pointed out - almost all the good reviews are from people with brand new Jettas that have yet to experience problems, after a few years I''m sure most of them will change their opinion of Volkswagen. Thinking about the amount of money I stand to lose after getting rid of this car makes me sick to death. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHANCES WITH A VW! If your looking for a good, reliable car in the same price range as the Jetta, the Honda Civic and Accord are unsurpassed.

burns oil & more oil & more oil & more oil; battery dead, 4 oxygen sensors, a mass air flow meter, radio, floor mats, tires, green goo has contnously been seeping from the door like a possessed demon, not to mention it burns more oil than a refinery

''99 VW Junka - one oil burnin'' maching - Lemon?? The purchase of my first car has been a nightmare. I bought a ''99 VW Jetta or Junka more appropriately. My VW Junka is less that three years old and I have had to replace the starter, battery, 4 oxygen sensors, a mass air flow meter, radio, floor mats, tires, green goo has contnously been seeping from the door like a possessed demon, not to mention it burns more oil than a refinery. The dealership head mechanic actually told me the scheduled maintenance for a oil change in once every 10,000 miles yet the oil burns at a rate of 1 quart per 1000 mile. When I questions this statistic He said'' it''s not our fault you don''t check you fluid with each stop at a gas station. Perhaps I forgot that this was such an issue with new cars considering it was never a problem, even with my ''74 Pinto Wagon but I guess the VW Junka is a special car. Mind you this was the same dealership that forgot to do the oil change however, they didn''t forget to bill me for the service. I found out when the engine was making funky scraping noises, only three quarts low at this point. This just does not make any sense. The servce at the dealershps has been sub par at best. No wonder JD Powers loves VW so much (NOT). I am giving serious consideration to pursuing legal options to remedy what appears to be a long term problem.

Strength:

Eye catching inside and out, red/blue dashboard and instrument panel lights, extra neat features such as the rear view visor which I just discovered recently thanks to a friend and how you can use your key to open/close your window and sunroof just by inserting your key in the driver''s side, full size spare, huge trunk space, and heated mirrors.

Weakness:

You don''t get that extra boost of power while on 1st gear that you find yourself leaning forward and waiting for the car to pick up speed-how sad is that when you want to race that Honda Civic right next to ya? If you don''t mind all the cosmetic problems you will experience and spending a lot of time at the dealership-at 23,000 miles I had to replace the motor on the power windows. Mind you I had to bring it back twice since the dealership thought I was making it up and finally fixed it the second time around when I proved them wrong. The glove compartment hinge is cracked and does not close well-it remains lock at all times now. The seat frame on the driver''s seat had to be changed since the spring came off-why...since I do not weigh that much. Vent odor since day one-the dealership stated that this is a typical problem with Jetta''s and finally suggested that I spray Lysol directly into the vents after I complained about the $70.00 fee they were going to charge to fix the problem! I had to replace the side turn signal light-it doesn''t have a snug fit that it easily comes off and dangles on the side of the car scratching the paint as you drive. The same with the light bul

I purchased this car brand new and since have been receiving compliments on how great the car looks. When I first sat in this car, I automatically fell in love with the features and wanted to stay in the car for a long time. The interior is definitely more appealing than the Honda''s I drove in the past. This car is definetely an eye turner inside and out. Then again...looks aren''t everything. I suggest that before purchasing a Jetta, stop by the service department at one of the dealerships and talk to customers that have brought their cars in for service.

Cup holders get in the way of the stereo. white was probably a poor choice of color for a diesel (requires frequent washing).

Best car that I''ve ever owned! This in one great car. I love the mileage with the diesel and the styling overall is supurb. Handles nicely, extremely quiet, good pick up, great stereo (Monsoon upgrade), love the leather and the sun roof. My parents like it so much that they just bought one and my husband will buy one for his next car and my daughter wants one for graduation. Great salesman in David Cardwell @ Reeves in Tampa

Good TDI Engine

Weakness:

Fit and finish problems and poor dealer support.

The Jetta has MANY fit and finish problems which Volkswagen understands but will not publish. The car is not well supported by VW and mine has been in the shop regularly (9 times for rattles). The front bumper has a design problem which results in the bumper pulling away from the car. VW will make you pay for this even though it is a engineering design flaw. VW dealership charges $140.00 for Oil Change and tire rotation.

Cup holder!

It has been a very good car, so far. Had to replace oil pan, thanks to an over zealous valet driver...$500.00! I am at 14,000 miles and my check oil lite comes on while driving. The car was just serviced and has plenty of oil. I took it in and they replaced the oil level sensor claiming that it went "wacko". Problem solved? No!!! The light is still coming on. Returned to dealership and they say nothing is wrong and that they cannot get the light to come on. I drive the car for half a block and the light begins blinking. Is it just me or has this happened to others. I will be taking it to another dealership this week.

Strength:

Decent throttle response, lots of aftermarket parts, small engine in larger than necessary bay. Nice location of stereo.

Weakness:

The suspension is weak, noisy and very stiff. Power mirrors never worked, stock radio sucks, interior is very plastic, and not very user-friendly. Paint chips easily, door moulding frequently *disappears*, and just about anything else.

DONT BUY THIS CAR! Unless, that is, you are a mechanic or want to be friends with one. I bought it cheap, and did some repairs, as is expected with any used car. But six months later and more than $1000 into it, it''s time to part ways. If you have the money to spend on repairs, it might be a good buy. Put some $ into intake & exhaust system and it will be a good-decent car with good mpg.

Fuzy Logic Tranny, The Tiptronic is much better. Some dealers have nappy service departments (BERGE VOLKSWAGEN) Pricey to get all the cool options My radio is in the lower slot so I don''t have problems with my cup holders.

First I bought a 2002 Jetta 1.8T last year and had nothing but problems with it. The center armrest kept collapsing, it rattled to no end... I then traded it in for a Jetta wagon (Which is made in Wolfsburg Germany instead of Mexico!) and have been happy ever since.
